Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TVILLIAM A. PRATT, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Stamford, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented a new and Improved rench, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of the invention is to provide a new and improved Wrench, more especially designed for use in households for various purposes, such, for instance, as screwing up or unscrewing caps of jars and other pack ages, and for loosening the caps from the rubber or other packing rings, the wrench being readily adjusted for gripping objects of various sizes, and having handled V- shaped jaws pivotally connected with each other at their ends and a supplementary jaw adjustably and removably attached to one of the jaws, to coact with the opposite jaw.
The invention consists of novel features and parts and combinations of the same, which will be more fully described hereinafter and then pointed out in the claims.
A practical embodiment of the invention is represented in the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indi cate corresponding parts in all the views.
Figure 1 is a plan view of the improvement as applied to the cap of a jar; Fig. 2 is a cross section of the same, on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Figs. 3 and 4 are side elevations of the inner faces of the handled aws; Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the supplementary jaw; Fig. 6 is a plan View of the same and showing the prying tool in position, part of the supplementary jaw being shown in section; and Fig. 7 is a cross section of the same on the line 7-7 of Fig. 6.
The jaws A and B of the wrench are provided at one end with handles C and D, and at the other ends are pivotally connected with each other by a pivot E, as plainly indicated in Fig. 1. The jaws A and B are V- shaped and are roughened at their inner opposite faces A, B, so as to form firm gripping surfaces for engaging the object to be turned by the wrench. The apexes of the jaws A and B extend outwardly, so that the object to be gripped can be readily engaged between the roughened gripping surfaces A and B of the jaws when swinging the same toward each other, by the operator manipulating the handles C and D correspondingly. Thus by the arrangement described the 0bject can be firmly gripped and turned so as to screw up or case may be.
When it is desired to grip an object that is less in size than the jaws A and B will grip, then use is made of a supplementary jaw F provided with angular arms G and G overlying the jaw B, and having depend ing spaced pins H and H engaging corresponding apertures B 13 formed in the angular arms of the jaw B. Now by engaging a set of pins H, H with a corresponding set of apertures B E the jaw F is brought nearer to or farther from the apex of the jaw B and consequently in a corresponding relation relative to the jaw A, so as to grip any object of a corresponding size, it being understood that the jaw F is directly opposite or in the same plane with the jaw A, as will be readily understood by reference to Fig. 2.
Upon placing the auxiliary jaw F in engagement with the set of apertures B 13 at the outer ends of the arms of the jaw 13, then the jaw F is sufficiently close to the jaw A to coact with the latter, for gripping small objects such as gas burner tips, small pipes and the like.
Then it is desired to pry open a cap from the packing of a jar, use is made of a prying tool J in the form of a blade, having a cutting edge and fitting a recess or a slot I formed at the junction of the arms G and G, directly above the jaw F, as plainly indicated in Figs. 6 and 7. The prying tool J is provided with side lugs J fitting the sides of the arms G and G, so as to hold the prying tool securely in position on the auxiliary jaw F, to allow of forcing the prying tool between the cap and the jar shoulder on which rests the rubber or other packing ring, the other jaw A of the wrench engaging the opposite side'of the cap.
The wrench shown and described, is very simple and durable in construction, can be cheaply manufactured and used for all purposes for which wrenches are commonly employed, it being, however, understood that the principal use of in households, for various purposes, such as unscrewing or screwing up caps of jars and other packages. The wrench can also be used as a nut cracker or like implement.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
unscrew the object, as the the-wrench is intended l. A wrench, comprising a pair of V- shaped handled jaws pivotally connected with each other at one end, the jaws being arranged opposite each other and with the apexes extending outwardly, and a supplementary jaw adjustably and removably attached to one of the said handled jaws to coact with the other handled jaw.
2. A wrench, comprising a pair of V- shaped handled jaws, pivotally connected with each other at one end, the jaws, being arranged opposite each other and with the apexes extending outwardly, one of the jaws having sets of apertures, and a supplementary jaw having angular arms provided with pins for engaging any one of the said sets of apertures.
3. A wrench, comprising a pair of V- I shaped handled jaws pivotally connected with each other at one end, the jaws being arranged opposite each other and with the apexes extending outwardly, one of the jaws having sets of apertures, a supplementary jaw having angular arms provided with pins for engaging any one of the said sets of apertures, and a prying tool for removable attachment to the said supplementary jaw.
4. A wrench, comprising a pair of V- shaped handled jaws pivotally connected with each other at one end, the jaws being arranged op osite each other and with the apexes extending outwardly, one of the jaws having sets of apertures, a supplementary jaw having angular arms provided with pins for engaging any one of the said sets of apertures, the said arms having a slot at their junction above the supplementary jaw, and a prying tool adapted to overlie the said supplementary jaw and extending into the said slot, the prying tool having side lugs fitting the said arms.
