LEO F. AIDT, OF ALBANY, NEW YORK.
NOSE-GUARD.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Lno F. AM, of Albany, in the county of Albany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nose-Guards; and. I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the specification, and to the reference-numerals marked thereon.
This invention relates to nose guards for eyeglasses and particularly to the type in which there is provided a bearing pad having a yielding supplemental pad or nose engaging portion, and it has for an object to provide a simple and inexpensive construction which will provide an increased gripping action without injuring the nose.
To this and other ends the invention consists in certain improvements and combinations of parts all as will be hereinafter more fully described, the novel features being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a front view of eyeglasses embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of one embodiment of my invention. Figs. 3 and 1 are two perspective views of another embodiment of my invention, and Fig. 5 is a perspective View of still anotherembodiment of my invention.
Similar reference numerals in the several figures indicate similar parts.
An effective nose guard can be secured by providing a pad having very small bearing surfaces, as this will enter the flesh better, but owing to the pressure being confined to a small area, it will injure the nose. In this invention the advantage of a small bearing surface is secured without injury to the nose by mounting a relatively yielding supplemental pad in such a manner and in such a relation to a main bearing pad that the former will have sufficient resiliency without making the eyeglasses cumbersome, and is prevented by the main bearing pad from entering the flesh to too great a degree, preferably by being surrounded by the said pad.
The invention, which is susceptible of being embodied in various forms, may be adapted for use with any type of eyeglasses, being herein shown as connected to vertical seats of lens attaching devices 1 which also serve for holding the lenses 2 to a spring Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 383,175.
The embodiment shown in Figs. 1 and 2 is preferably made from flat stock and comprises an upper bearing pad 4: having a perforation 5, and a lower bearing pad which is in the form of a loop, preferably made by a downwardly extending arm 6 which bears on the nose and has at its lower end a bend 7 edgewise of the stock and rearwardly and upwardly in a plane substantially transverse to the plane of the lenses, to provide the resilient arm 9 of the loop; and, as this arm does not engage the nose, it may be made thinner than the nose engaging arm 6. Forming a continuation of this arm is an arm 10 arranged in the rear of the pad a and having a deflected portion passing through the perforation 5 and carrying the supplemental bearing bad 11, which is prefe ably made from the flat stock. The guard may be attached to the eyeglasses in any suitable manner, but in the present instance the attaching arm 12 extends forwardly and upwardly from a point substantially be tween the upper and the lower bearing pad. lVhen applied to the nose the entire surface of the upper bearing pad bears thereagainst, around that portion which is pressed by the supplemental pad, to counteract the injurious etfects produced by the latter, while only the forward arm (3 of the lower loop engages the nose.
The embodiment shown in Figs. 3 and 4: is also made from flat stock and has its upper bearing pad 13 imperforate and its looped lower pad connected therewith by a deflected portion 1 arranged substantially transversely to the plane of the bearing faces of the pads and formed by fiatwise bends of the stock at the upper end of the arm 15 of the loop. The resilient arm 16 extends upwardly from arm 1'7 of the loop and in front of the upper bearing-pad and carries the supplemental pad 18 to which the main hearing pad 13 acts as a stop. An attaching arm 19 may branch forwardly and upwardly from the guard, as in the other embodiment.
In the embodiment shown in Fig. 5 the upper bearing pad 1 has a perforation 5 as in the embodiment shown in Figs. 1 and 2, while both arms (3 and 9 of the loop are arranged to engage the nose, the arm 6 being! more nearly vertical than the arm ('3 of Figs. 1 and 2, and the arm 9 being curved forwardly and having the resilient arm 10 connected therewith by a bend 20. The resilient arm is provided with a deflected portion 10 passing through the perforation 5 and carrying the supplemental bearing pad 11. In operation this form is the same as the embodiment shown in Figs. 1 and 2, except that a different lower nose-engaging surface is secured.
It will be noted that the yielding of the pad is secured without weakening the mate rial from which the guard is made and without unduly increasing the size of the guard, and further, that there is provided a construction which may be made from flat stock, thereby securing an inexpensive device.
I claim as my invention:
1. A nose guard comprising an upper bear ing pad, a supplemental pad therefor, and a loop connecting the supplemental pad and the upper bearing pad and extending downwardly with one arm in advance of the other to act as the lower bearing pad.
2. A nose guard comprising a bearing pad, supplemental pad therefor, and a looped bearing pad having one arm connected to the supplemental pad and the other arm arranged in advance of the first named arm and connected to the first named pad.
3. A nose guard comprising an upper bearing pad, a supplemental pad therefor, a
looped lower bearing pad having one arm connected to the supplemental pad and the other arm arranged in advance of the first named arm and connected to the first named pad, and an attaching arm projecting forwardly from the guard between the upper and lower pad.
at. A. nose guard formed from flat stock and comprising a bearing pad, a supplemental pad therefor, and a loop connecting the bearing pad and the supplemental bearing pad and formed by bends in the stock in a plane substantially transverse to the plane of the lenses.
A nose guard formed from fiat stock and comprising an upper bearing pad, a supplemental bearing pad therefor, and a downwardly extending nose bearing loop connecting the supplemental pad and the upper bearing pad and formed by edgewise bends in the stock.
6. A nose guard formed from flat stock and comprising an upper bearing pad having a perforation, a looped lower bearing pad having one arm in advance of the other,
an arm connected to the loop, arranged on the rear of the upper bearing pad and having a deflected portion passing through the perforation, and a supplemental pad carried by the arm.
7. A nose guard formed from flat stock and comprising an upper bearing pad having a perforation, a supplemental bearing pad therefor, a looped lower bearing pad formed by edgewise bends in the stock transverse to the plane of the lenses, a resilient arm connected to one arm of the loop and a supplemental pad for the upper bearing pad,
carried by said arm,
LEO F. ADT. lVitnesses CHARLES S. ALnnIoII, L. B. hacX'roN.
