To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARRY B. SUTCH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsburg, in the count-y of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Fas teners, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to window locks, and has particular reference to a device of this character which is adapted for ease of attachment to the windows, and which is easy and convenient to manipulate and also strong and durable in actual use.
For a full understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following detail description and to the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a front elevation of the invention applied; Fig. 2 is a side view of the same, partly in section. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective of the anchor piece to be hereinafter described, and Fig. 4 is a similar view of the key member.
Throughout the following detail description, and on the several figures of the drawings similar parts are referred to by like reference characters.
This invention in it-s preferred embodiment includes a key member 10 adapted to be counter-sunk into the inner face of the upper sash of an ordinary window, and secured therein by any suitable means. 1f the lock is intended merely for the purpose of securing both of the sashes in closed position, the said key member will be secured near the bottom of the upper sash, but if it is intended y that the lock shall be used as a means for securing the sash in different relative positions of adjustment there may be any num` ber of the key members fitted to different parts of the upper sash, all for cooperation with the mechanism now to be described. Secured preferably on the upper edge of the lower sash and at such a point laterally with respect to the window as to coperate with the aforesaid key member or members, is an anchor piece 11. Said anchor piece will be connected directly to the upper edge of the lower sash and held thereon by suitable means such as screws. Slidably mounted in connection with the anchor piece is a pedestal or plunger 12, the lower end 12 of which is dove-tailed into a groove 13 of the anchor piece, whereby the pedestal may move in a right line bodily toward or from the upper sash. The upper end of the pedestal projects outwardly at 14 toward the upper sash, and said end 14 and the pedestal as a whole will be of heavy rigid material in order to insure the maximum strength. The projection 14 is adapted to be received within a socket 14 in the key member 10, and by this arrangement when the lock is set the power of the member 14 to resist shearing stresses will always be suflicient, and when the device is used for the purpose of locking both sashes closed there will be no possibility for either sash to be moved with respect to the other. When the device is being manipulated, the pedestal l2 will be moved bodily into or out of the socket of the key member and when thus moved out of the socket the device will permit free movement of the sash, and yet will always be suliiciently close to the key member to insure prompt resetting or locking thereof.
In order to insure the foregoing parts from separation and to maintain the eXtension 14 of the pedestal in the socket 14 of the key member, there is journaled in the upper end of the pedestal a bolt 15. Said bolt by reason of its mounting in the pedestal aforesaid is always maintained in a position perpendicular to the outer sash and always in a vertical plane perpendicular to the key member or members 10. The outer end 15 of the bolt is pointed or conical in order to insure ease of introduction into and through a keyhole slot 16 in the bottom of the key member 10. Said outer end of the bolt also is provided with one or more lateral projections 17 which when the boltis turned through an angle of ninety degrees will interlock beneath the bottom of the key member. At this time the projection 14 will be securely seated within the body of the key member 10. The inner end 18 of the bolt constitutes a finger piece for the manipulation both of the bolt and the linger which carries it.
The fastener above described may be secured at any suitable point on the respective sashes. If the window is of that type Wherein there is only one pane for each sash the attachment will be secured at one or both sides, but if there is a central strip in the window the attachment may be secured thereto.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
l. In a device of the character set forth, the combination of an anchor piece having a longitudinal groove, a pedestal vmounted slidably in said groove and having a projection at its upper end extending parallel to the said groove, a key member having a socket to receive said projection, and a bolt journaled in the upper end-of the pedestal and having means for interlocking the same with said key member.
2.. In a device of the character set forth, the combination of a key member having a socket and a keyhole slot in the bottom of the socket, .an anchor piece, a pedestal slidably .connected with the anchor piece and movable bodily toward or from the key member, said pedestal having anend projecting into said socket of the key member,
and means carried by the pedestal to interlock the pedestal projection in cooperation with the key member by interengagement with the keyhole slot aforesaid.
3. In combination, a key member having a socket and a keyhole slot in the bottom thereof, an anchor piece having a dove-tailed groove, a pedestal movable bodily in said groove toward and from the key member and having an integral projection adapted to be received bythe socket of the key member, and a bolt journaled in the pedestal and adapted to pass through the keyhole slot of the key member to elfect interlockingy engagement between the key member and the pedestal.
