UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ELIZABETH JENNISON, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN.
COMB.
T 0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIZABETH JENNISON, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Detroit, Wayne county, and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combs, the following is a full, clear, and complete j specification.
This invention relates to combs and more particularly back combs adapted to serve as ornaments as well as securing means, and j consists in the matters hereinafter set forth, and more particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
Referring to the drawings Figure 1 is a view in front elevation of a comb embodying features of the invention; and Fig. 2 is a view of the back of the comb.
As herein shown, a pair of oppositely disposed similar members 1 and 2, preferably of thin sheetmaterial, having teeth 3 on their inner edges for a portion of their length, are pivoted together at or near one end to swing into overlapping relation with their teeth closed by each other, a pivot pin a connecting one to the other, and the free end of one being formed into a hook 5 adapted to engage the other member and retain them in closed relation. The ends 6 beyond the pivot and hook are bent or twisted into ornan'iental projections. The jaws 01' I members are substantially flat. An arched l puff form is secured to each member. This consists of a plate 7 one of whose ends 8 is secured by a rivet pin 9, or the like, to the j free end of each member, and the other end 10 of which is secured by the main rivet pin j -;t, the body of the plate swelling out above the member to which it is attached and prefj erably being formed so that while its lower margin 11 overlaps the member, its upper margin 12 extends a considerable distance beyond the upper margin of the member. "he device thus constitutes means for securing the back hair as well as supports or foundations for pufis or braids.
Obviously details of construction may be varied within the scope of the appended l claims without departing from the spirit of the invention, and I do not limit myself to 1 any particular form or arrangement of construction. l
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed March 8, 1909.
of which 1 swing mto overlapping Patented Sept. 14, 1909. Serial No. 482,115.
What I claim as my invention is 1. A back comb comprising a pair of oppositely disposed members of sheet materia provided along their adjacent margins with teeth, and pivoted together at one end to relation and adapted at the other end to be detachably interlocked in said overlapping relation, and puff plates each secured at its ends to one of said members and bent between its ends into an arch extending above and beyond the forward face of the member.
2. A back comb comprising a pair of oppositely disposed members of sheet materia each provided with teeth along one margin, a pivot pin securing the members at one end in overlapping relation, the free end of one member being adapted to interlock with the corresponding end of the opposite member when the teeth are closed by each other, a puff plate on each member secured at one end on the pivot pin and fastened at the other end to the free end of the member beyond the teeth, the body of the puff plate being bent into an arch between the securing ends.
A back comb comprising a pair of oppositely disposed members of sheet mater al each provided with teeth along one margin, a pivot pin securing the members at one end in overlapping relation, the free end of one member being adapted to interlock with the corresponding end of the opposite member when the teeth are closed by each other, a puff plate on each member secured at one end on the pivot pin and fastened at the other end to the free end of the member beyond the teeth, the body of the puff plate being bent into an arch between the securing ends, and the pivot end of one member and, the free end of the other member forming ornamental projections curved transversely to the planes of the members. I
In testimony whereof, I sign this specification in the presence of two witnesses.
