MAY E. FRIEND, OF LAKE CRYSTAL, MINNESOTA.
COMBINED NURSERY-cnam AND SATCHEL.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 1, 1908.
Patented sept. 14, 1909.
Serial No. 435,912.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAY E. FRIEND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Lake Crystal, in the county of Blue Earth and State of Minnesota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Nursery-Chairs and Satchels; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in thc art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention has for its object to provide an improved device adapted to be carried by mothers and nurses when traveling with babies or small children; and to this end it consists of the novel devices and combinations of devices hereinafter described and defined in the claims.
This improved device is in the nature of a combined nursery chair and satchel adapted to be folded into small space when it is to be carried.
n the accompanying drawings which illustrate the improved device, like characters indicate like parts throughout the several views.
Referring to the drawings, Figure 1 is a plan view showing the chair extended and in condition for use. Fig. 2 is a vertical section taken on the line m2 m2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view showing the device folded and in condition to be carried; and Fig. 4 is a transverse vertical section taken on the line x4 of Fig. 3.
The satchel, which is preferably of boxlike form and is rectangular, may be con structed of wood or any'other rigid material and is preferably covered with leather and it is made up of two sections 1 and 2, connected by suitable hinges 3. To the top of the main section 1 a suitable carrying handle 4t is preferably applied. The outer edges of the main section 1 project beyond the fixed side plate 1ZL to form a receptacle or pocket adapted yto receive the folding L wings when the latter are unfolded, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a rigidly con-=` parts of the chair, which chair is made up of two main wings 5, two supplemental wings 6, and a sea-t board 7. The main wings 5, which are preferably in the form of flat portions, are connected to the projecting vertical end portions of the main section 1 by hinges 8; and when they are folded together they completely close the outer compartment thereof. The supplemental wings G are connected to the main wings 5 by hinges 9. The opening movements of the wings 5 are limited by flexible stop straps 10 attached thereto and to the top of the case section 1. The wings 5 and 6 are provided with angular metallic supporting brackets 11 and 12 that are adapted to detachably support the seat 7. Vhen the wings 5 and (5 are folded, the projecting fianges of the brackets 11 and 12 are adapted to enter grooves 13 and 14, respectively, of the said wings G and 5. y
The manner in which the chair is set up for use is shown in Figs. 1 and 2, and the manner in which it is folded is shown in Figs. 3 and 4l. By reference to Fig. l it will be noted that the seat board 7 is first placed against the adjacent side of the case section 1 and the wings 6, after being rst folded against the wings 5, are turned inward against the said seat board. Suitable catches (not shown) may be provided for securing the case sections 1 and 2 in closed positions and for securing the wings 5 to the case section 1.
The compartment aorded within the closed sections 1 and 2 will be found very serviceable for carrying babies clothes and napkins and the chair, when set up, has obvious utility.
It will be noted that the body of the satchel, so-called, forms a rigid back for the chair when the device is set up, as shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
The entire device, while of small cost, has in practice been found convenient for the purposes had in view.
What I claim is:
1. The combination with a rigidly constructed satchel of approximately rectangular form and having a recess in one side, of a folding nursery chair comprising side wings hinged to the opposite vertical edges of the open side of the body of said Satchel, and a seat arranged to be supported by said structed approximately rectangular satchel having a recess in one side, of main wings hinged to the vertical edges of the open side of the body of said Satchel, supplemental wings hinged to the free vertical edges of secured to said mam and supplemental sadsatchel body, substantially as describedfl.-
. said rhein Wings, seat supporting brackets l are. adapted to close said open sideV of the Wings, and a Vdetachable seat board adapted i vIn testimony whereof I eX my signature to be supported by the brackets of said in presence of tWo Witnesses. Wings, and whichv seat board and supple- I v MAY E. FRIEND. mental Wings7V When turned together, are adapted to be contained Within the open. side of said Satchel body, and which main Wings Witnesses: Y
