ACCOUNT BOOK CABINET.

UNITED srA'rEs i gn vronmon.
FREDERICK A. BRAUN, OF LORAIN, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE RAPID ACCOUNT FILE COM- PANY, OF LORAIN, OHIO, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
following is a specification, the principle of.
the invention being herein explained and the best mode in which I have contemplated applying that principle, so. as to distinguish it from other inventions.
My invention relating, as indicated, to
v cabinets, has particular regard to the provi- 'uently in the book which is kept sion of an improved cabinet for retaining in orderly and easily accessible fashion individual account books of the sort largely favored among grocers, butchers, and other tradesmen. As. is well understood these books are usually made with alternate pages arranged to be torn out, so that if the customers order' be written upon such page and a carbon sheet interposed a duplicate record is made, the carbon copy remaining per-Inlat ie tradesman. Obviously where a large immber of such books are required; the keeping of the same isapt to prove burdensome, and various systems have accordingly from time to time been devised for filing them away.
The object of the present invention is to provide a simple and compact arrangement for the keeping of such record books, or like articles. i
To the accomplishment of this and related objects said invention, then, consists of the means hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
The annexed drawing'and the following description-set forth in detail certain mech anism embodying the invention, such disclosed means constituting, however, but one of various mechanical forms in which the principle of the invention may be used.
In said annexed drawing: Figure 1 is a perspective view of a cabinet embodying my several improvements; Fig. 2 is a erspectlve view on an enlarged scale of a bro *en portion of such cabinet; Fig. 3 is a section taken through the same transversely thercof;and Fig. 4 is a perspective View of such cabinet with an attachment for supporting a book when withdrawn from the cabinet to have an entry written therein? As presented in Figs. 1 and 4 my improved 7 Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed May 21, 1908. Serial No. 484,018.
Patented June 8, 1909.
vcabinet A is shown in a form adapted to be placed on the top of a counter, ta like,-so that when the lid A is down it can be conveniently utilized as a desk. As will .later be apparent, however, it is immaterial so far as the several inventive features are concerned whether the container, or cabinet, be given the articular shape shown, or be made flat, and: if desired, it can be placed in a drawer or the like.
The primary feature of construction to which I would call attention is that of the pockets a designed for the reception of the individual account books, to which reference has been previously made. These pockets, the size of which is determined by the size of the book to be accommodated therein, are preferably'made in series out of sheet metal, suchas tin, and the books B when in place are designed normally to be substantially entirely included therein, see Fig. 3, so that any name, or other mark of identification on such book will be out of sight.
For the purpose of facilitating the removal of any deslred book, each pocket or compartment of the case is provided with a lifting device which consists of a member a loosely dis osed in the bottom of such compartment an having attached thereto at its one side a vertical rod (1 that extends upwardly beyond the top of the compartment. This .rod is slidably-he'ld in a flange (1 formed by turn v ing over the corresponding upper lateral edge of the alined compartments a, and for convenience in assembling is attached to the plate or llfting member proper by being screw-threaded in a lug .a" wherewith the latter is provided. The upper end of each rod preferably bears a disk a on which appears a number, by means of which; taken in conjunction with an index a conveniently secured on the inside of the cover of the cabinet, any particular partys account book may be readily discovered.
Since, when in use, it may at times found inconvenient to close the cover A in order to have a writing surface upon which to lay a book abstracted from the cabinet, I provide a support C, such as shown 1n Fig.
le, or the 4, of approximately merely the size of a book.
Such support includes -two longitudinal guides c c aflixed to therespective sides of the box A and transverse guides c c slidably mounted thereon. To the latter is in turn slidably affixed the plate that constitutes the support 0, proper. By virtue of the slidable arrangement of the parts of suchsupport, it will be obvious that the latter may be positioned over any-desired portion of the open cabinet as found most convenient, either for the purpose of withdrawing a book from a compartment, or subsequently writing thereon.
Other inodes'of applying the principle of my invention may be em loyed instead of the one explained, change eing made as regards the mechanism herein disclosed, provided the means stated by any one of the following claims or the equivalent of such stated means be employed.
I therefore particularly point out and dis tinctly claim as my invention 1. A cabinet for filing articles of the character described, comprising a plurality of vertically disposed compartments open at their upperends and respectively adapted to receive and substantially entirely include one of-said articles, and a hft in each such compartment for partially raising the corresponding article therefrom, such lift including a member independent of, but adapted to support, the article in its compartment, and a rod connected with said member to raise the same, said rod extending above the top of the com artment and being slidably secured to the latter;
2. A cabinet for filing articles of the character described, comprising a plurality of vertically disposed compartments open at their upper ends and respectively adapted to receive and substantially entirely include one ofsaid articles, and a lift in each such compartment for partially raising the correspond- I mg article therefrom, such lift including a plate loosely resting on the bottom of said compartment and formed with an upturned end portion, and a rod having threaded attachment to such end portion and extending above the top of the compartment.
3. A cabinet for filing articles of the char acter described, comprising a plurality of vertically disposed compartments open at their upper ends and respectively adapted to receive and substantially entirely include one of said articles, and a lift in each such compartment for partially raising the correspondmg article therefrom, such lift including a member independent of, but adapted to support, the article in its compartment and a rod rigidly attached to one end of said member,
said rod extending above the top of the compartment and being slidably secured to the atter.
4. A cabinet for filing articles of the churacter described, comprising a plurality of vertically disposed compartments open at their upper ends and respectively adapted to receive and substantially entirelyinclude one of said articles, and a lift in each such com partment for partially raising the corresponding article therefrom, such lift including a plate loosely resting on the bottom of said compartment and formed with an upturned end portion, and a rod having threaded attachment to such end portion and extending above the top of the compartment, said rod being slidably secured to such top.
' 5. In a cabinet for filing articles of the character described, the combination of a filing case proper comprising a plurality of compartments, guides along two parallel sides of said ease, othertransversely disposed guides movably mounted upon said first named guides, and a supporting plate movably mounted upon said last named guides.
Signed by me this 18th day of May, 1908.
