LAMP-BURNER.
Spcifcaton of Letters Patentf;
Patented June'. 1, i909..
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known thatvI, FRANK A. Se'HUnTz, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Chicago, county of Cook, andv State of have invented certain'neW and useful Improvements in Lamp-Burners, of which the following is a specication, and
`Which are illustrated in the accompanying drawings, forming a part thereof.
The inventionY relates to burners for switch and signal lamps, and which have come to be known in the art Yas long-time burners, theircharacteristic feature being that they [will produce a -comparatively sma'll flame point liame.
-: for a long` The present invention is an improvement' f.
'on the burner forming -Patent No. 851,827, of April 80,; 1907, issued l stem; or other means, to :a lamp font. not shown, and there 1s employed the usual tv icki period `-without trimming.
the subject of Letters on the application of John'A. Mosher, which was intended to. producea round or pencil The object of this invention is to secure., in a burner of this type, a lat'flame and one f vWhich'will produce a greater degree of'illu- 'I Inination; and It consists 1n the structurel hereinafter described, and which is ,illustrated' in the accompanying drawings, in Whichi Figure l is a plan view of the burner Without chimneyor chimney-holder; Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the burner, the chimney and chimney-holder being in. central Yvertical sectio'ngf'and Fig. .3 is a central vertical section bf the burner and Wick-tube alone.
The burneris carried by the usual casing i 10, adapted to besecured by. a threaded 5 raising mechanism, the spindle of which isA represented at l1. --Thefvvicktube l2 extends tion, a Wick-tube, an ,oblong cup -mounted on through the casing l0 on its vertical`aXis,.l
--and ispreferably round to accommodate a i Wick 13 of the samefforrn., The burner s proper is inthe form of anoblong cup 14',
' -endof the tube 12, thevaperture being sur l5 which lits upon the tube .as a sleeve.
Theends o f the cup flarel outwardlyand are scalloped, as shownin Fig. 1,' thereby l providing a"central grooveor channelv ,16 f
flanked by oblique Walls 17, 1S, eachl of .which isl provided adjacent itsA lower end with an airport 19, 20. The-sides 21,22, of
the cup are substantially parallel Vand ar'efl .practice the Wick. 13 is raised so 'that' upper end is above the bottoms of the apen-'- tu'res 23, 24, and above the ports 19, 20. '.'The' action ofthe channelsl 16,
-l cut away or recessed fromabove to form in each a V- shaped aperture 23,24, which eX`= Its tends Well. to the bottom of'th'e clip.
burner is preferably providedxwith a chimney-25, seated upon a gallery 26, and held in place by spring fingers 27.-
The flame which normally',v being from a round Wick, would be pencil shaped, is spread by the burner to flat form, 'its edges 'following up the channels 16, 16. rIhis hattened form is secured 4by the conjoint .and the yair currents entering through the apertures. 23, Q4, and the ports 19, 2 0.' rl `hese' currents strike the iiame upon what become, under this action, its flattened sides, and 'those entering the ports having' t-heform of jets and j enteringobliquely at considerable velocity carry the lapex of theflame toa greater :height than would otherwise be secured.
They also insure'better combustion -adjacent the Wick end, `and retard the formation of a crust bv more completely consuming, or at least preventing the condensationv of thev carbon. y
The burner producesa greaterillumination relatively to the oil consumption than has been heretofore obtained, and insures a uniformity in the size and shape, and consequently in the' luminosity of thejlame, 'for a very long period. y
I claim as-my inventionl; A lamp burner comprising, in combina-- "tion, a Wick-tube, an-oblong' cup mountedon .thetube and having its ends upwardly liaring andv ported adjacent their bases.
Q. A lamp burner comprising, 1n combina-A the tube and having its' ends upWardlyiiar-- ing and ported adjacent their bases, the side nalls'of the cup being cut away to-form V- shaped apertures.
.3. A lamp' burner "comprising, in combinzution, a Wick-tube, an oblong cup mounted on the 'Wick tube', the ends thereof seing scalloped and ported in-theirouter lscallops adjacenttheii bases. 4. A lamp burner comprising, 1n combination, a Wick-tube, an oblong cup mounted on the `Wick tube, the v'end sf'thereof belngl scallopedand ported-in their outer scallo vs adjacent theirvbases, :the sidewalls of e los IiI
cup being cuiy away `t@ foei-:mdf-Shaped apen tures.
5. A lamp bums? omprisng'in combi'nw tion, a wick-tubs, and a, pair of opposteydisposed mmng wmgif. extendlng upwardly Yfrom the end of the fflckiube, Such *wmgs being scalloped t@ 'm in each a central Channel and obque Walls a; ng the cham? ual, such wals bamgport-ed, ,.rjacent the bases.
