5J1 RGIGAL DEVICE.
Specification oi Letters Patent.
Patented tra 25, 1909.
Application filed. January 18, 196%. Serial No. 4.72.5372.
town, in thecounty of Middlesex and State,
of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and Improved Surgical Device, of which the following is a specification.-
My invention relates to surgical devices and more particularly to protective appiiances for the hands, the special object of my invention being to provide a rubber cot for the fingers and portion of the hand likely to carry or beexposed to infection during gynecological examinations and the like.
In the accompanying drawingl have shown my improved out in a perspective view as adjusted to the hand in position for use.
It is now customary for-the surgeon or physician when making an examination. oi
the character mentioned to not on a rubber glove of the usual type w iich completely covers the hand and extends well up the forearm. This is more-or less of a troublesome operation since these gloves cannot be quickly adjusted and are easily torn More overa glove is unnecessary since the e aniination is almost invariably made with the index finger alone or at most with the. index and second fingers. Less careful physicians fre uently make such examine tions'with no Further protection than finger cots. But'inasmu'ch as the latter reach only to the crotch of the fingers and do not cover the palm or back of the hand, infection is apt to be carried either to or from these we posed portions.
My improved cot aims to avoid these disadvantages and at the same time meet all the requirements of the careful physician for, the use to which it is intended to beput. My device comprises a rubber cot havingfll) a finger portion A, the fingers of which are" joined after the fashion of a glove and preferably coverthree fingers as shown and (2) a body portior B which extends well sidepractically to the-base of the thumb.
down over the palm and back of the hand, front and back, and is carried down. on the The edges of the rubber are finished in any suitable fashion, preferably preserving the elasticity of the rubber to facilitate the adjustment and removal of the cot.
it will be readily seen that for the urposes for which it is intended my improve cot pre- 'sents all the advantages of a glove, since the hand coveredto the full extent to which. it;-
is exposed, while it may be much more readily adjusted, even more readily than separate finger cots since the body portion serves as convenient flap by which the cot may be drawn onto the' fingers simultaneously. The cot is furthermore:reversible an d. may therefore be used on either hand, thus dispensing with the necessity fora pair of cots, as is necessary when=using gloves. In this oonncction the cot iiiay be either reversed-so that the'portionivhich covers the palm of one hand will cover the back of the other hand when adjusted on the latter, or the cot n iay be turned inside'oi t so that the same portion will cover thfi palm of each. hand. in addition to the fact that a single cot may be used on both hands, the device will further commend itself on the gI'OfiIld of econoi'uy, since it can be marketed at a much lower figure than a pair of gloves, i
Obviously the usefulness or the cot is not confined to gynecological examinations, for
which purpose it is however, es eclallyadaptthe scope of my invention as set forth in the:
ed. It may be em loyod in t e exploration of small wounds, tie mouth, throat and in other situations where but one or two fingers c to infection are employed and the exposur 13 not great. v
Modifications of. the precise structure shown may bemade without departing from following claim.
I claim as my invention:
A rubber cot for the uses specified, comprising' a finger portion rotecting some but not ail of the fingers of t e hand and ab dy portion integral therewith partially cover ing the palm and backotthc hand so as to il ol'atef the same from infection, the-free margins of the body portion being suitably finished to preventinjury'to the same and to facilitate the adjustment of the cot, substantially asdescribcd. I v
in testimony whereof I-have signed my name to this specification, in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
