To all whom "it may concern.

'Be'it known that I, GEORGE R. ADAMS, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hiawatha, in the county of Brown and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Washing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.

' The object of this invention, generally stated, is to improve the construction of the washing machine illustrated and described in my prior patent No. 864,591, dated August 27, 1907. In said patent the agitator comprises a pair of crossed bars, preferably of wood, said. bars being provided with clothesengaging clips, the shanks of which are driven into the lower sides of said bars The object of the present invention is to brace said agitator bars and to provide improved means for supporting the clothesengaging members in order to obviate the necessity for driving them into said bars and thereby weakening the latter. In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 is a vertical central section, through a washing machine embodying the features of my invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the brace for the agitator, this view also illustrat ing the improved means for attaching the "clothes-engaging clips. 3 is a sectional view and Fig. 4 is a perspective viewillustrating) the improved bracket or support for the I tu four legs 2, suitably braced and united by Fig. 5 is a detail view of a tub-retaining stra T e embodiment selected for illustration comprises a stand 1, which may consist of cross-bars. 3, the legs and cross-bars preferably being connected by means of rivets or Welding, in order to obviate the use of bolts and nuts. The legs 2 referably are of angle iron. The tub 4 may be rectangular in horizontal cr0sssection, as indicated. It is herein shown as supported upon the stand by means of brackets 5 (shown in detail in Fig. 4). Preferably the brackets are formed integral with the legs 2; each bracket may consist of two triangular lugs 6, each struck up from one web of the leg to lie in the same or substantially the same horizontal plane. The portion of each leg over the bracket 5 is bent out of alinement with the rest of the leg to conform to the tub 4. i

In order to prevent the tub from being dislaced. when the machine is o erated vi0- ently or irregularly, or from ot er causes, I provide straps 7 at the corners of said tub, said straps embracing the upper ends of the legs 2 of the stand 1. The tub may be removed from the stand by lifting it off said stand.

The agitator comprises two crossed bars 8, preferab y of wood. To strengthen said ars, I provide a brace 9, the construction of which may be as shown in Fig. 2. As therein shown, the brace consists of a cruciform member having flanges 10 at its edges to lie at the sides of the bars 8, and a central hub 11 to extend within an opening 12 in the agitator. The brace 9 is connected with the bars 8 by means of studs 13 on said brace extending into openings in the under side of said bars. Upon the under side of the brace 9 are clothes-engaging loops 14. Preferably the brace 9, With its hub 11, studs 13 and loops 14, is an integral casting. The agitator is secured to the lower end of a vertical 0 erating shaft 15, which passes through the ub 11, a bolt 16 extending through said hub and said shaft and uniting said parts. v The shaft 15 is provided with a crank 17.

The brace 9, with its marginal edges 10 and studs 13, materially strengthens the agitator to Withstand the twisting stresses imposed upon it in use. Said brace also provides a means for attaching the clothes-engaging loops which does not weaken the wood ars 8.

The tub-supporting brackets 5 being integral with the legs 2, are stronger, as well as cheaper, than the cast iron brackets employed in the structure of my said prior patbars, said brace having a hub extending into said bars.
