SAFETY ATTACHMENT FOR GAS-BURNERS.

To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, GEORGE H. JENNINGS, a citizen of the United States, residing in Brockton, in the county of Plymouth and State orp Massachusetts, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Safety Attachments for Gas-Burners, of which the following is a specilication.
This invention relates to that class of safety-attachments for gas-burners in which a pilot-light is employed, and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of parts whereby when the gas is accidentally extinguished or blown out the mechanism connecting the gas supply pipe and the burner is automatically closed, thus shutting oil' the supply of gas t0 the burner.
The nature of the invention is fully described in detail below, andillustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which my attachment is illustrated as applied to a gas-burner of the general type to which the velsbach burner belongs, such type of burner being that t0 which this invention is particularly adapted.
In the drawing the invention is shown partly in vertical section and partly in elevation, and a small portion of the burner, chimney and supply-pipe are represented as broken out.

he connection between the supply-pipe 1 and the burner 3 comprises a pipe 7 screwed on the upper end of the supply-pipe whereby a chamber 8 is produced, a pipe 9 integral with said pipe 7 screwed at its upper end int-o the burner and provided with a horizontal partition 10 which has a conical valve-seat 11 connecting with the chamber 8, and an upwardly extending pipe 12 integral with the portion 7, thickened at one side and provided in such thickened portion with a passage 13 which is connected by a passage 14 with the chamber 8-all these parts 7 to 12 inclusive being one integral piece. The passage 14 is adapted to be opened and closed by means of apilot-valve or cock 15. The pipe 12 contains the passage 16 which connects with the adjusting pipe 17 which has screwed into its u per end the nipple 18. This nipple 18 has tted into it the lower end of the copper expansion-tube 19 which is provided at its '.lower end with an integral flange 20 which is 'held between the lower end of the nipple 18 l and shoulder 21 in the pipe 17. The copper l tube 19 extends up vertically through a suitable opening 22 in the burner 3 and parallel withthe mantle 5, its upper end being proj vided with a cap .23. Secured to the outer end 24 of the mantle-holder' 6 and ext-ending through said cap 23 is a valve-stein 25, preferably of steel, which extends down through the entire length of the copper tube 19 and through the passage 16, and has rigid with it's lower end a valve 26 which is of a shape which corresponds to that of the valve-seat 11. A tube 27 extends up from the passage 13 through a suitable opening 28 in the burner 3, and its upper portion 29 is parallel with the copper tube 19 and is closed at its extreme upper end 30, and apertures 31 are formed on the side of the port-ion 29 which is next the. copper tube 19.
When the gas is to be lighted the main cock 2 and the pilot-valve 15 are turned on, this being the position of the parts illustrated in the drawing, and the gas passes from the pipe 1 through the chamber 8 and passages 14 and 13 into the tube 27, and is lighted in the usual manner at the apertures 31 at the upper end of said tube. The pilot-light in a few seconds expands the copper tube 19 in the direction of its length, and as its lower end is seated and stationary by means of the flange 2() the expansion is upward and raises the upper end so that the valve-stern 25 is lifted by the cap 23 and the valve 26 is raised oill its seat 11 thus allowing the main body of gas to pass from the tube 1 through the chamber 8 into the pipe 9, and thence into the burner where it is ignited by the flames issuing from the apertures 31, affecting the mantle in the usual manner. As soon as this gas is lighted the pilot-valve 15 is shut ofi, causing all the gas to pass up into the burner.
Inasmuch as the copper tube is very long,
and the perfor-ations 31 are in line with and near the tube, but a very few seconds are re uired to expand it suiiiciently to lift the va ve 26 from its seat. Now should the gas be blown out accidentally or otherwise,the copper-tube immediately begins to cool and contract, and as its lower end is fast the upper end is lowered and the valve-stem 25 moves the valve 26 onto its seat, thus entirely shutting ofi" the flow of gas into the passage in the pipe 9-it being remembered that the pilotat 'such a point that when the gas is fully turned on the expansion would be `ust sufficient to seat, the valve 26 without uckling or bending the valve-stem 25.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Y Patent, is
1. In a safety-attachment for gas-,burners of the character described, a pipe ada ted to be secured at one end to the gas-supp y-pipe and at its opposite end to the burner; a partition extending across said pipe near its lower end and rovided with a port which vconstitutes a va ve-seat; an upward tubular extension rigid with the pipe; a copper expansion-tube rigidly connected at its lower end with said extension and extending up through the burner and parallel ,with the flame or mantle; a valve-stem made of a less expansible metall than the expansion-tube and extending through saidA tube fromits upper end to its lower .end and inte the tubular extension; a valve secured to the lower end of the valve-stem and adapted to t said valve-seat, the upper end of the valve-stem being adapted to support the holder of an incandescent mantle; and a 'pilot-light connected with the pipe which is secured to the supply-pipe and opening into the chamber be ow t holesin the tube of the pilot-light where the gas .iste be ignited being located near the expansion-tube, for the purpose set forth.
2. In a safety-attachment for gas-burners of the character described, a pipe ada ted to be secured at one end to the gas-supp y-pipe andat its opposite endv to vthe burner; a pare partition insaid pipj'the outlet tition extending across said pipe near its lower end and rovided with a port which constitutes a va ve-seat; an upward tubular extension ri id with the pipe; an adjusting pipe screwe into the upper end of the upward extension; a nipp e -screwed into t e upper end of the adjusting pipe 5 a copper exp ansion-tube with its lower end heldrigidly between the adjusting pipe and the ni ple and extending up through the nip le an the wall of the burner and substantla y parallel with the flame or mantle for substantlally its entire length; a valve-stem made of a less expansible metal than the expansion-tube and extending through said tube from its up er end to its lower endy and into the tubu ar extension; a valve secured to the lower end of. the valve-stem and ada ted to t said valve-seat, the upper end o the valvestem being adapted to support the holder of an incandescent mantle; a pilot-light construction formed in one wall ofthe pipe which connects with the gas-supply-pipe and comprising a as passage connected atit's lower end wlth t e chamber below the partition in the pipe which is secured to the gas-supplypipe; a valve in said passage; and a tube closed at its upperv end, connected at its lower end with said passage and extendin up through the lower wall of the burner an with its upper ortion near and substantially parallel with t e expansion-tube, said upper portion being provided with perforationsl in the side next the expansion-tube, for the purpose set'forth.
