SLIDING- GATE.
Application filed. December 26, 1908.
To all whom it may con cern:
Be it known that l, l/VILLARD l/V/isnrne- TON TNAsnnN, of Roxburg, in the State of Idaho, United States of America, have invented certain new and useful improvements in Sliding Gates, er" which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in sliding gates, of the type which are adapted to be opened and closed by travelers without dismounting from the vehicle in which they are driving, and the objects of my invention are to provide simple and e'flective means by which the gate may be locked in either open or closed position, whereby it will be impossible for any animal or other means exerting a side pressure to open the gate.
rl`he invention is described in detail, in the accompanying specilications and drawings.
ln the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the gate in closed position. Fig. 2 is the same view in open position.
ln the drawings, like characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in each 'ligure Referring to the drawings, A represents the central post located to the side of the roadway, and B represents a fence extending to one side of the post. C represents the post at the opposite side of the roadway of any suitable or usual form.
in accordance with the present invention, a track D is supported from the top rail 10 of the fence B, and on this rail, the gate E is slidably mounted, this being accomplished in the embodiment illustrated, by providing rollers 11 and 12 supported from suitable brackets 13 and 14, and bearing on the top and bottom sides respectively of the rail D, the bracket 1l for the under roller 12 being supported from two arms 15 and 16, which extend upwardly from the top and bottom of the end member 17, on the gate, the member 15 being parallel with the top member 18 of the gate, and the member 16 converging to the same.
The means for operating the gate comprise two levers 19 and 20 pivoted to each other at 21 and having their outer extremities pivoted respectively to the gate and to the post, the lever 2O being pivoted at 22 to the member 16, and the lever 1.9 being pivoted at 23 to a projection 2e on the post, the pivoting points 22 and 23 being substantially in a horizontal line with each other, whereby the gate will be Specification of Letters Patent.

located in either open or closed position as hereinafter described.
To operate the levers an arm 25 is'pivoted at 26, to one of the levers, and has its upper extremity connected to two ropes or chains 27 and 28, which extend through a pulley 29 at the top of the post, and thence to opposite sides oi' the gate, and down through pulleys 30 and 31 supported on a suitable cross-beam 32, the ends of the ropes being provided with suitable weights 33 and 311 which hold the saine taut, and also serve as handles in operating the gate.
To maintain the pivoting points o'l the levers in alinement with each other when the gate is either in open or closed position, a retaining member 35 is provided being U- shaped in form, and having its extremities connected to the end member 17 on the gate, lever 2() passing within the retaining member. hns the lower end 36 of the retaining meinber toi-ins a stop to limit the downward movement of the lever 20, whereby both levers are held in substantially horizontal position when the gate is open or closed.
ln operation, when the gate is closed, and it is desired to open it, the handle 34 is grasped and the rope pulled. This raises the arm 25 which raises the pivoted ends oi the levers 19 and 20 causing them to swing about their pivoting points 22 and 23. It is necessary to pull the rope rather quicklyr in order to swing the point at which the levers are pivoted, past the vertical line between their pivoting points and when this is once done, the weight of the levers themselves, will cause them to straighten out into alinement with each other, and assume the position shown in Fig. 2, the gate during this movement being slid inwardly on the tracks.
To close the gate the handle 38 is grasped and the rope pulled. This again raises the pivoting points oi the levers from the position shown in Fig. 2, and as soon as the pivoting point 21 is moved past the vertical line inidwayv between the pivoting points 22 and 23, then the weight of the levers will again swing them to closed position, as shown in Fig. 1. v
lt will be observed that in either open or closed position, the three pivoting points 21, 22 and 23 are all in alinement with each other, and from this it results that the gate remains locked in either oli' these two positions, and it will be impossible to move it sidewise unless the pivoting point 2l is iirst raised.
As many changes could be made in the above construction, and many apparently widely-different embodiments of my invention, Within the seope of the claim, eould be made, Without departing from the spirit or seope thereof, it is intended that all matter contained in these specifications and drawings shall be interpreted as illustrative, and not in a limiting sense.
What I claim as my invention is In a sliding gate, the combination With a standard, of a rail extending laterally from the same, a gate mounted on the rail and formed with a central reet-angular portion, and a laterally extending triangular portion, a pair of levers centrally pivoted together and having their ends pivoted respectively to the standard and to the triangular portion,
the lever Which is pivoted to the triangular portion being of greater length than the other lever, an arm pivoted to one of the levers, operating ropes connected to said arm and extending to opposite sides oi the gate, means for supporting said operating ropes in position, a vertically extending U-shaped retaining member supported from the gate and inelosing the innermost lever and being adapted to limit the downward movement of said lever to cause the pivoting points of the lever to remain in alinement When the gate is opened and closed.
In witness whereof l have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two Witnesses.
