To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR A. VARDELL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dallas, in the county of Dallas and State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Doffers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to apparatuses for doliing cotton from the gin saws in the process of ginning. As heretofore constructed, apparatuses of this character are open to serious objection, inasmuch as they either wear out quickly themselves or they dull and ruin the gin saws.
It is therefore, the obj ect of my invention to provide an apparatus which will obviate these objections, including a practically indestructible doifer, which will not strike the gin saw, but which will however, readily and quickly remove the cotton therefrom in the process of ginning.
In its theoretical embodiment, my invention consists in a doffer constructed of metal throughout and formed with peripheral blades extending longitudinally thereof, having equidistantly spaced recesses. This doffer I propose to rotatively mount in close but non-contacting juxta-position to the gin saw, with its said spaced recesses opposite the saw blades thereof, and to drive the same at a speed greatly increased over that of said gin saw, whereby the air current generated by said peripheral blades will operate to quickly and effectively remove the cotton or lint clinging to the said saw blades.
In the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a view partly in side elevation and partly in longitudinal section, of my improved doffer. Fig. 2 is a view thereof, partly in end elevation and partly in vertical crossesection. Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail cross-sectional view of the peripheral plates. Fig. 4 is an enlarged detail fragmentary sectional view of one of the end plates, and, Fig. 5 is an enlarged sectional view through one of the end plate hubs.
In the practical embodiment of my invention, I provide a doffer embodying a central rotatable shaft 1, on which are mounted at spaced points, the end plates 2 of my improved doffer. Said end plates have central openings and are riveted through the material surrounding said openings, to hubs 3, provided with a central tapering bore adapted for the reception of av tapering sleeve l.

The sleeves 4 encircle the shaft 1 within the hubs 8, and are provided with an outer externally threaded end for the reception of nuts 5 engaging thereon against the hubs 3 to draw said sleeves 4 tightly therein, and with longitudinally slitted ends to be forced into tight engagement with the shaft l.
T he end plates 2, are circular in shape, and are provided with continuously extending flanges 6, upon, and at right angles to the peripheral edge thereof, in the formation of which flanges, the material at the edge of the end plates 2, is stamped in semi-conical outwardly projecting crimps 7.
The perihery of my improved doffer is constructe by longitudinally extending circumferentially overlapping plates 8, connected at their ends upon the end plates 2 and supported intermediate said plates by circular supporting plates 9 having a circular edge flange to which said plates are riveted, and provided with an opening in the center, of the pro er size through which the shaft l passes. n their overlapping relation, the plates 8 are provided with longitudinally extending parallel semi-cylindrical ribs 10 and 11 and with an upstanding flange forming a blade 12, which ribs l0 and 11 are respectively adjacent to said blade 12 and the opposite longitudinal edge of the plate. It will be evident that in forming these ribs, a corresponding depression in the opposite side will be formed. Thus plates 8 are overlapped to such a degree as to engage, with their depressions corresponding to ribs 10 adjacent their blades 12, the ribs 11 adjacent the edge of the adjoining plates, and are secured to the end plates 2 with their engaged ribs and depressions over each of the crimps 7 thereof, thus insuring an air-tight oint in order that the doffer when rotating, will not collect dirt or dust therein.
The blades 12 of the peripheral plates 8 are, as shown, provided with equidistantly spaced notches, recessed in the longitudinal edge thereof, and designed to aline with the saw blades of the gin saw, whereby the saw blades will not be harmed in case vibration of the saw cylinder causes the same to approach more closely my improved doffer.
From the foregoing, it will be readily seen that I provide a doffer which will be practically indestructible, which is air-tight, and which is provided with means whereby the same, when mounted closely adjacent but in non-contacting relation to a gin saw, and

Having described my invention7 I claim:
l. In a doffer comprising circularly flanged end plates, and longitudinal circumferen-4 tially overlapping plates having outstanding flanges, and secured at their ends to said end plate flanges, said overlapping plates having'l means which relatively interlock With each other, andr with, portions of the lianges of said end plates, substantially as described.
2. Adoffer comprising circularly flanged end plates, and longitudinal circumferentially overlapping plates securedat their ends to said end plate flanges in air-tight relation, and provided With longitudinal relatively engaging elevations and depressionsintheir overlapping relation, and With outstanding' flanges forming generating blades, substane tially as describe I.
