Description

0. H. TALBOTT. PHOTOGRAPHIG PLATE HOLDER. APPLICATION FILED JUNE 5, 190B. 922,356, Patented May 18,1909.
l t `l 2l y@ Witwe/awo j OTHNIEL H. TALBOTT, OF ELDORADO SPRINGS, MISSOURI.
PHOTOGRAPHIC-PLATE HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 5, 1908.
Patented May 18, 1909.
Serial No. 436,911.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known that I, OTHNIEL II. TALBOTT, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Eldorado Springs, in the county of Cedar and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in Photographic-Plate Holders, of which the following is a speciiication.
My invention relates to improvements in photographic plate holders, and its primary object is the provision of a device of this character with means by which the plate may be readily and quickly centered within the holder, said means being preferably automatic in its operation.
A further object of my invention is the provision of a plate holder with means by which the position of the plate within the holder can be readily and quickly changed without opening the holder.
A still further object of my invention is the provision of a plate holder which is simple, durable and eliicient, and which may be manufactured and sold at a comparatively low cost.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described, claimed and illustrated in the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure 1 is a sectional view taken on a plane extending centrally and vertically through a photographic plate constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional view taken on the vertical plane indicated by the line 2 2 of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a sectional view taken on a plane extending centrally and horizontally through the plate holder, and Fig, 4 is a perspective view illustrating the means by which the plate carrier can be operated to reverse the position of the plate within the holder, and the means by whichthe plate carrier is held against accidental displacement.
Referring to the drawing by reference numerals, 1 designates the sides, 2 the top, 3 the bottom and 4 the back of a plate holder of the usual or any appropriate construction.
My invention consists in the provision oi' a plate carrier adapted to automatically center the plate within the holder and adapted to be operated to reverse the position of the plate within the holder. The plate Acarrier comprises a body 5 which preferably consists of a rectangular piece of metal, wood or any other material suitable for the purpose. The body 5 is provided with elongate slots 6 which open out through the end edges thereof, and which are disposed in a plane which extends centrally and longitudinally through the body. Clamp carrying members 7 and 8 are secured to the body 5 for relative movements longitudinally thereof through the medium of lugs 9 which are disposed in the slots 6. The clamp carrying members are held against accidental displacement through the medium of plates 10 which are secured to the lugs 9 and which engage the body 5 on opposite sides of the slots 6.
The relative movements ol the clamp carrying members 7 and S are synchronized through the medium oi' a lever 11 and links 12. The lever 11 is pivotally mounted at a point intermediate its ends upon the body 5 and the links 1.2 are pivotally connected to the lever and to the clamp carrying members. The clamp carrying members are resiliently held in their innermost positions by means of a contractile spring 13 which is secured at its ends to said members. The member S has secured thereto a single clamp 14 which is provided with a groove 15 extending longitudinally ot the body 5. The clamp of the carrying member 7 consists of a pair oi relatively movable jaws 16, each of which includes a lange 17 and a groove 1S. The relative movements of the jaws 16 are held in a plane extending transversely oi the body 5, that is, in a plane extending at right angles to the plane of the movements oi' the clamp carrying members 7 and 8. The jaws 16 are movably mounted upon the member 7 through the medium ot' lugs, not shown,
which are formed thereon for engagement in L grooves 19 which extend longitudinally of the member 7 and which open out through the ends thereof.
The members of the clamps 1 are synchronized through the medium ol a lever 2() and links 21. The lever 2O is pivoted at a point intermediate its ends upon the member 7 and the links 21 are pivotally connected to the lever and to the aws. The jaws 16 are resiliently held in theirI innermost positions by means of a contractile spring 22 which is secured at its ends tothe jaws.
In practice, one corner of the plate is inserted in one of the jaws 16 of the clamp carried by the member 7, after which the opposite corner of the plate is inserted in the other jaw of the clamp. After the plate has been inserted in the jaws of the clamp, -it is inserted in the clamp 14 which is carried by the member 8, it being understood that the end edges of the plate are disposed in the grooves 15 and `1S oi the clamps, and that the flanges 17 of the jaws 16 engage the side edges oi" the plate.
As the spring 22 tends to hold the jaws 16 in their innermost positions, in -which positions they are equally spaced from the `longitudinal center of the body 5, and as the spring 13 tends to hold the members 7 and 8 in their innermost positions, in which positions they are equally spaced from the transverse center of the body 5, it should be a parent that said springs will automatical y center the plate in the frame. The plate is held against movement in the clamps by means of a spring member 23 which'is secured to the body 5 for engagement with the rear surface of the plate, said member being secured at one of its ends to the body,
'in order to permit the position of the plate within the holder to beV reversed, the plate carrier is rotatably mounted upon the back 4 oi the plate holder through the medium of a stud 24. An operating head 25 is secured to the stud 2e", and a spring catch 25 is secured to the stud 2e for engagement in one of two notches 27 to secure the plate carrier in its adjusted position. A stop 28 is secured to the inner surface oi the back d of the plate holder to limit the movement of the plate carrier in both directions.
From the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, the construction Vand mode of operation of the invention should be understood without a Jfurther extended description.
Changes in the form, proportions and minor details of construction may be made within tire scope of the claims without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
