Description

5mm gettati@ vELIAS r. FORD, Aor STILI-WATER NEW YORK.
Leners Patent N 92,180, daten .ruig 6, 1869.
'.'llhe Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part-of the same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIAS T. FORD, of Stillwater, in the county of Saratoga, and VState of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pumps; and I dohereby declare that the following is a full land exact description of the'same, reference being had t0 the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of ref- To enable others skilled in the art 'to which my invent-ion appertains, to make and use'the same, I will now proceed to describe fully its construction and operation.
J represents the plunger-rod, which is suitably provided with screw-tiueads, as shown.
D represents a disk ot' rubber, which is-perforated, in order to slip overthe plunger-rod.
C represents a metal casing, which is cut open upon one side, as shown in fig..5. It will be'observed'that this -cut is not made straight aorossthe tace of the casing, vnor is it made in a diagonal line, as is common, but one end is provided with the tongue b, and the other/with the socket c.
F F represent metal disks, which are locatedabove and below thc rubber disks, and are secured, by means of nuts, in the usual manner.
The plunger, when put together 'ready for use, is represented in tig. 2.
The operation will be readily understood.
When it is desired to expand the plunger to fit'the cylinder, the nut V- is screwed down, and the rubber disk thereby expanded.
This operation necessarily opens the casingO more` or less, but not sutiiciently to withdraw the tongue. b from the socket c. A tight joint is therefore always secured.
I am well aware that plungers quite similar to mine have been used, but I :un not aware that a metal casing, with-atong'ue and socket, has before been used.
Having thus'fnlly described my invention,
VhatI claim as new, and desire to secure by Letf ters Patent, isf In the plunger J, having the expanding-disk D, the metal casing G, with tongue b and socket c, when ar ranged as described, for the purpose set forth.
ELIAS T.- FORD.`
