Description

Alloys-of Silicon, a specification.
UNITED HANS GOLDSGHMIDT, OF ESSEN-QN-THE-RUHR, GERMANY.
ALLOY OF SILICON.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 11, 1909.
Original applications filed February 24, 1908, Serial No. 417,523, and April 24, 1908, Serial No. 428,933. Divided 'and this application filed January 19, 1909.
To all whom "it may concern:
Be it'known that I, Hans GOLDSCIIMIDT, a subject of the King of Prussia, and resident of Essen-on-tl1e-Rul1r, in the German Empire, have invented certain new and useful of which the following is My invention relates to alloys of silicon with one of the alkali earth metals, calcium, bariumor strontium.
Ca'lcium-silicon alloys have been produced at different times, but as far as commercial alloys are concerned which are to .be' manufactured on a large scale, ,these alloys, were" always contaminated, with carbon, as for in-- stance the calcium-silicon prepared by Mois san. On account of such contamination the alloys always contained a smaller amount of the alkaline earth than they should contain accordingto their theoretical composition.
The object of the present invention is to produce alloys of silicon with an alkaline earth metalwhich alloys are free from ear bon and contain the alkali earth metal in proportions up to 40 per cent. The processes by which these alloysare produced are described in my'applications Serial No.
417523 filed February 24, 1908 and Serial No. 428933 filed April 24th. 1908 from which the present application is a division. They are produced by heating silicon or ferro-silicon together with an excess of an oXid of the alkali earth metal heated furnace.
".The
calcium, accordingto the present invention may be produced as follows :-Two parts by the liberated calcium forms With-the silicon a calcium silicon alloy while the remainder of the lime forms a slag-with the silicon. This liquid slag may be regulated so that it crumbles on cooling and thereby enables the easy separation of the calcium silicon alloy. To aid this crumblin" action a flux such as fiuor spar is preferab y added.
The heating of the mixture ,mentioned above may beefi'ected either in an electric new alloys are the effect of removin in an electric or in a fuel k .w1th an alkali alloy of sillco'n, for instance with The Serial No. $73,044.
or in afuel-heated furnace and the roportions and ingredientsmaybe modified as described in Serial Nos. 417523 and 428983, from which the present application has been divided out.
In the example given above Where 2 parts of lime are treated with 1 part of silicon cium silicon alloy is especially useful also for'the purpose of refining fused steel. The specially adapted for this latter purpose on account of their freedom from carbon, thereby preventing carbon from being newly introduced into the fused steel. Further the calcium silicon alloy has the last traces of sulfur which may still be present in the fused steel. The calcium alloy according to the present invention has also the action of killing the steel and it forms a very fluid slag which soon mounts to the" surface. Further characteristics of the new alloys are, that they do not corrode when exposed to the air, that they may easily be crushed, that they are unaffected by vwater even when being placed under same, metallic structure similar hibit a metallic sparkle when fractured.
1. As a new product an alloy of silicon free from carbon, 2-. As a new product an alloy of silicon with an alkali earth metal which'alloy is free from carbon and contains a considerable percentage ofthe alkali earth metal.
3. As a new product a calcium-silicon alloy free from carbon. a
4. As a new product a calcium-silicon alloy-free from carbon and containing up to L0 per cent. of calcium.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
