IMPROVEMENT IN ADVERTISING DEVICES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 92,137, dated June 29, 1869.
To all whom it may concern:
. Be it known that I, RANSOM F. RANKIN, of Columbus, in the county of Franklin and State of Ohio, have invented a new and useful Improved Device for Advertising; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specication, in which- Figure l is an elevation, Fig. 2, an elevation with the oase removed, and Fig. 3 a top view ofthe operating mechanism.
The same letters in all the figures are used to designate identical parts.
This improvement relates to a device for advertisingespecially designed for advertising in railway-cars, depots, hotels, and other publie places; and it consists in printing the advertisements upon a strip of cloth, india-rubber, or other suitable material atv tached to a cylinder, which, after the strip isV unrolled, shall be so revolved as to wind up the cloth automatically, by the action of a spring combined with gearing which multiplies the revolutions of the roller in relation to the movements of the spring, the roller and operating mechanism being confined within a hollow cylindrical shell or case. In the annexed drawings, A is a strip of cloth, india-rubber cloth, or other suitable material, upon which are printed such advertisements and designs as may be desired. This strip is attached at one end to a roller, B, running upon an axle, B', attached to and turningin bearings in aframe, O. rlhis frame is rectangular, having parallel strips at the top and bottom and end pieces, with an intermediate vertieal piece, c. Heads are placed on each end of the roller to conh'ne the strip to the portion between such heads, and thus insuring its being evenly wound upon the roller. The axle of the roller projects through the piece c of the frame, in which it has one of' its bearings, and has upon its end the bevelpinion D, which is acted upon by the larger beveled driving-wheel E, which is keyed to a vertical shaft, F, having its bearings in the top and bottom of the frame C.
A spring,G, is coiled around the shaft F, and the inner end is attached thereto, while the outer end of the spring is fastened to the frame C, the spring being so coiled around the shaft that, as the strip A is drawn out, the spring shall be wound tightly about the shaft F, and as soon as the strip is released, the spring, in relaxing, will cause the shaft F to revolve, and, through the bevel-wheels E and D, cause the roller to revolve and wind up the strip around the shaft.
rIhe metallic piece H is attached to the end of the strip A by means of a pin passing through the eye h, which contains a loop formed in the end ofthe strip and introduced through a slit in the eye h. l
lThe frame and cylinder are inclosed in a tubular case, I, made of metal, wood, indiarubber, or other suitable material, having caps M on the ends, and having, also, a longitudinal slot, through which the strip A is drawn.
The case may be litted with lugs or other suitable devices for attaching it to thc Walls of any car or room where it may be desired to suspend it.
When the strip is drawn out the advertisements may be read, and on being released it will immediately be automatically wound around the roller within the case. i
The word Pull77 may be engraved or paint` ed upon the piece H to indicate the mode ot' operation, and induce persons to draw out the advertising-strip. A
I am aware that rollers automatically operated by alspring have been in common use for winding up window-curtains, and Ido not therefore claim the use of a spring for the purpose of merely winding up the strip.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
The strip A, roller B, frame C, wheels D and E, and spring G, in combination; but this I claim only when said parts are arranged within a tubular slotted case, I, and used as adevice for advertising, substantially as set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto' set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
BANSOM F. RANKIN.
Signed in our presence:
R. MASON, W. B. RANKIN.
