FLAGSTAF. APPLICATION FILED APR. 24,1908.

FLAGSTAFF.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 11, 1909.
Application led April 24, 1908. Serial No. 429,061.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, HARRY N. B. FISHER, a citizen Iof the United States, residing at Reading, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Flagstaifs, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to improvements in flag staff holders and more particularly to one which will permit the staff or pole to revolve.
One object of the invention is to provide a device of this character which will be simple, strong, durable, comparatively inexpensive and effective for the purpose intended.
Another object of the invention is to provide a revolving flag staff holder having a socket member to receive the staff and an attaching member which may be readily engaged with an ordinary stationary iag staff holder.
`With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved fiag staff holder; Fig. 2 is a plan view; Fig. 3 is a vertical longitudinal section; and Fig. 4 is a horizontal section taken on the plane indicated by the line 4 4 in Fin". 3.
he invention comprises a stationary attaching member 1 and a revolving` flag staff carrying member 2. Said member 1 carries a head 3 arranged within a casing 4 on the member 2 and having interposed between its upper and lower faces and the opposing walls of said casing annular rows of bearing balls 5, 6 whereby the member 2 may revolve freely in either direction upon thel member 1. The latter may be of any suitable form and construction which will enable it to be engaged with or secured upon a stationary support, but .I preferably make it with a cone-shaped body portion 7 which may be inserted in the socket of an ordinary flag staff holder or in a socket in any other support. The upper end of the body 7 is formed with a reduced concentric cylindrical pivot portion 8 on which the head 3 may be integrally formed or rigidly secured by a screw 9 or equivalent fastening means. Said head 3 is in the form of a circular disk and has in its upper and lower faces concentric annular grooves or raceways to receive the bearing balls 5, 6. The staff carrying member 2 is provided with a socket portion l() which is adapt-ed to receive the end of the flag staff or pole and which may be formed integral with the casing 4 or secured thereto by a screw or equivalent means 11. The casing or body 4 of the member 2 is preferably constructed of upper and lower plates 12, 13 and an interposed open body portion 14. Said plates 12, 13 are secured upon the body portion 4 by screws or similar removable fastenings 15 and their opposing faces are recessed or shouldered, as at 16, to receive the open body portion 14. Said opposing faces of the plates 12, 13 are also formed with concentric annular grooves or raceways to receive the bearing balls 5, 6 and in the center of the lower plate 13 is a circular opening 17 to receive the pivot or neck portion 8 of the attaching member.
In operation, the flag pole or staff is inserted in the socket 10 of the device and the portion 7 of the latter-is inserted in an ordinary flag socket or in a socket in the stationary support. It will be seen that owing to the provision of the anti-friction or ball bearing connection between the two members of the device that the socket member which carries the flag staff will be permitted to revolve freely in either direction and thereby prevent the iiag from becoming twisted around or caught upon the stati. Owing to t-he peculiar construction of the device it is exceedingly strong and durable and may be produced at a comparatively small cost.
lVhile I have shown and described the invention as in the form of an attachment for use between the flag staff and an ordinary flag socket, it will be understood that the attaching member may be so constructed as to be engaged with or secured upon a support of any description.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is:
1. A flag staff holder comprising an attaching member having a body portion to engage a flag staff socket and a Hag staff carrying member revolubly mounted on said attaching member and provided with a socket to receive a flag sta-H.
2. A flag staff holder` comprising nan attaching member', a revoluble Hag staff supporting member, a stationary head carried by one of said members, a casing carried by the other of said members and surrounding said head, and anti-friction bearings between said head and casing.
3. A Hag staff holder comprising an attaching member having a stationary head, a revoluble member having a socket portion to receive the flag statt' and a casing or body portion having opposing plates spaced apart and arranged on opposite sides of said head, one of the plates having an opening to receive the attaching member and annular rows of anti-friction bearing balls interposed between said plates and said head.
el. A flag stalil holder Comprising an attaching member having a tapered body portion to engage a Hag statil socket, a revoluble flag staff carrying member upon said attaching member, and anti-friction bearings between said members.
5. A flag staff holder comprising an attaching member having a tapered body portion to engage a. flag staff socket, said attaching member also having a stationary head, a revoluble member having a socket portion to receive a flag staff and a casing or body portion to receive and surround said head, and anti-friction bearings between the opposite Sides of saidhead and said casing or body portion of the revoluble member'.
