STAMP-STICKER, AND ENVELOP-SEALEB.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, JOHN T. F. BAEYE-RTZ, a citizen of the United States, residingat Los Angeles, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented a new and useful Stamp Sticker and Envelop- Sealer, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a device for moistening and affixing stamps and for sealing envelops.
One object ofthe present invention is-to provide a device by which a stamp can be affixed to an envelop by a single movement of the hand.
Another object of theinvention is to provide a device whereby anydesired number of stam s can be so affixed at one operation.
Anot er object of the invention 1s to provide means for quickly and conveniently sealing an envelop.
A-further object ofthe invention is to provide means whereby theenvelo may be first stamped and then sealed by t e use of the same device.
Other objects of the invention will appear hereinafter.
Referring to the drawings :Figure 1 is a perspective of the device showing the manner of using the same in stamping an envelop. Fig. 2 is a perspective showing the manner in which the device is used in sealing formed as a flat tube of convenient size and.
shape to be grasped by the hand. The tube may be of rectangularcross-section with an upwardly extending flange 2 at each side thereof, forming between said flanges a channel for the stamps, as hereinafter explained.
The handle member is formed below this channel portion with a chamber or tank 3 adapted .to'contain water, said chamber having, for example, a'filling opening 4 closed by a plug 5. Said plug may have a push button valve 6 normally held closed by a spring 7 so as to enable air to be admitted from time to time by the pressure of the finger on the push button, thereby allowing water to escape more freely from the tank.
. The moistening device consists of a roller or cylinder 9 of felt or other suitable absorbent material mounted to turn on a tubular 7 arm 10 extending beneath and parallel to the bottom of the handle member 1, said arm being L-shaped with its upwardly extending portion 11 communicating with the water chamber '3 in the handle member 1-. The tubular arm 10 is perforated as at 12 to allow escape of water from the chamber into the absorbent roller 9. Said roller 9 may have a perforate metal core 1 3 running on the arm 10.
The handle member 1 has forwardly extending: side walls 15, at the forward end of which is journaled the shaft 16 of a pressure roller 17. Said pressure roller is preferably faced with rubber or other elastic material and is so formed and arranged that its under or pressure portion extends below the level of the bottom of thehandle member 1. A supplementary pressure roller 18 may be provided on the same shaft 16, said supplementary roller being located externally of or beyond one of the side Walls aforesaid. A stamp retainer 20 extends forwardly from the forward end of the top of the water chamber 3 and extends under the pressureroller 17, said retainer being formed as a sheet metal plate or tongue extending downwar-d1 and forwardly in a convex curve and bending abruptly upwardly at its end to form a stop 19 for arresting the forwardmovement of the stamps, sufficient space being left between the end of this retainer or stamp and the surface of the pressure roller to enable a single thickness of paper,- or "a single stamp, to passat a time.
Feed controlling means 21, consisting of a sheet metal plate bent in channel shape, is pivoted intermediate its ends by pivots 22 to the side walls 15- ofthehan'dle member extension and has at'its forward end two fingers 23 which extendforwa-rd at each side of the forwardend of the retainer 21 and are adapted to rest against the surface of the pressure roller When this forward end is raised. A finger piece 25 formed as a lateral pro'ection at the rear end of this feed control 'n means enables operation'of this feed contro ling means by the users finger.
The device may be used with a bunch or package of stamps, with a single stamp or with a ribbon or strip of undetached stamps. In using the device with a strip'of undetached stamps, the strip is laced with its forward end on top of the fee controlling member 21 in the space between said member and the pressure roller 17, said strip extendi v on top of the feed controlling member 21 an on to of the handle member 1 and being retaine laterally within the channels formed by the side flanges of the said feed controlling member and the handle member. The handle member 1 is grasped by the hand substantially as shown in Fig. 1, so that pressure may be conveniently applied to the finger piece-25 0f the feed controlling member by lacing the forefinger thereon as shown. he stamp is affixed by first running the moistening roller over the corner ortion of the envelop, indicated at 26, whic is to receive the stamp, and then by the same mo-.
tion drawing the pressure roller over said portion and simultaneously pressing a finger on the finger iece 25 of the feed controlling means 21, t ereby causing the foremost stam to be pressed against the roller suffi ciently to enable the roller to catch it and draw it forward by friction. As the stamp passes forward under the roller it is immediatelypressed by the roller against the already moistened surface of the envelop, so that the same roller in pressing on the stamp serves to feed it forward and to aflix it to the envelop. When one stamp has been thus affixed it may be separated from the strip by placing a finger of the other hand on the stamp and drawing on the handle member 1 with a slight twisting action to part the stamp strip along the first line of perforations. If more than one stamp is required it is only necessary to moisten a correspondingly long space and allow the stamps to pass out and be pressed on the envelop before tearing off the strip.
In usmg the device with loose stamps, said stamps are placed one on top of the other in the space between the feed controlling member and'the pressure roller and the friction of the pressure roller when the feed controlling member is o erated by the finger piece 25, as above descr1 ed, draws forward the topmost stamp, the retaining stop 19 preventing the remaming stamps from passing forward until the top has been removed. The stamp so drawn forward is afiixed by the pressure of the pressure roller, as above described.
In using the device for sealing an envelop the moistening roller is inserted under one end of the fla of the envelop indicated at 27 in Fig. 2, an by then drawing the device the entire length of the envelo and keeping the moistening roller under the ap the gum on U l 0 lower face of the fla is moistened and immediately thereafter t e pressure rollers 17, 1S passin over the flap serve to press it down on the ody of the envelop 26 thereby sealing the envelop, the two pressure rollers providing an extension of roller surface beyond the width of the moistener, which is necessary to insure pressure on the entire flap; 1

What I claim is:
1. A stamp affixing means comprising a handle member, a moistening device carried thereby, a pressure roller carried by the handle member, means for su porting stamps on the handle member and feed controlling means for pressing the stamps against the pressure roller to cause the same to be fed orward by the motion of said roller.
2. A stamp sticker comprising a handle member formed with a water chamber, a moistening device beneath the handle member, means for connectin said moistening device to the water cham er in the handle member, a pressure roller supportedon the handle member and means for supporting stamps in proximity with said pressure roller, said means being movable to bring the stamps into frictional contact with the pressure roller to enable the same to be fed' forward by rotation of the pressure roller.
3. A stamp sticker comprising a handle member formed with a chamber for containing water, a moisteningdevice beneath the handle member provided with means for supplying the same with water from the trol ing means movably mounted on the handle member and having a stamp supporting portion extending in proximity to the pressure roller to cause frictional engagement of the stamps with the pressure roller, and a stamp retaining stop connected to the handle member and extending in proximity to the pressure roller.
4. An envelop sealer comprising a handle member formed with a water chamber, a tubular arm communicating with'said water chamber and having a portion extending beneath said water chamber, a moistening roller rotatably mounted on said tubular arm, said tubular arm being perforated to allow access of water to said moistening roller, and a pressure roller rotatably mounted on the handle. 5.
