To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. JACKSON, ofthe city of New York,-in the county and State of New York, have invented a new and improved Ornamental Back for Open Fire-Places; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact descrip; tion-thereof, which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.

The object of this invention is to construct an ornamental back and sides for open fire-places, which may be inserted in the said fire-place, and forming the back of a grate, as may be required, and thus relieve the eye from looking onablackened soapstone as now used in a handsomely-finished fire-place, the construction of which will be fully understood from the following description.

Figure 1 represents a front view of my improved back for fire-places.

Figure 2 is a sectional plan view of the same, showing it attached to one of the sides. Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.

In this case the letter A represents a frame of castiron or other metal, the said frame being cast witha diamond or other pattern in which colored tiles or designs, B,'may be set. y

The letters 0 represent hooks cast on the flange of the sides of the back, for the purpose of looking into corresponding hooks on the sides D, as shown in fig. 2.

The faceof the castings is enamelled, thus giving the back and sides of an open fire-place a handsome finish, which will be in keeping with, and add to the beauty of a first-class fire-place.
