APPARATUS FOR DEPOSITING METALLIC LEAF FROM THE SURFACE OF A HEATED ROLLER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 15, 1907.
Patented July 27, 1909.
Serial No. 368,4=50.
Providence, in the State of Rhode Island, I
have invented a new and useful Improvement in Apparatus for Depositing Metallic Leaf from the Surface of a Heated Roller, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an apparatus adapted for depositing metallic leaf in lines upon bookcovers and similar articles, and it consists in a fillet roller, upon the peri heral surface of which the fillet of metallic eaf is automatically deposited from the paper strip of a package roll, as hereinafter set forth.
In the accompanying drawing: Figure 1 represents a side elevation of one form of my improved apparatus for depositing metallic leaf from a package roll. Fig. 2 represents a side elevation showing a modification, in which a delivering roller is employed in con nection with the package roll. Fig. 3 represents a side elevation showing the interior of the holding case for the package roll and delivering roller.
In the drawing, Fig. 1, A represents the heated roller, and B the handle by means of which the said roller is operated. To the handle B is pivoted the arm 0 which carries the package roll D, the said package roll being in this case so wound that the metallic leaf E will lie at the outer side of the paper strip F. The arm C is carried forward so that the metallic leaf E will be pressed against the periphery of the heated roller A by means of the spring G, and the said package roll D may be held away from the peripheral surface of the heated roller, by means of the button H, which is pivoted to the shank I of the handle, and, when turned, engages with the stud J upon the arm 0 to hold the said arm and the package roll D in the outward position. An inclined arm K extends downward from the under side of the shank of the handle B, the said arm being provided with a slot L, adapted to receive the stud M which is secured to the adjustable piece N, the said piece N being rovided with the slot 0, and adjustably he d to the arm K by means of the thumb screw P. Upon the outer end of the stud M is placed the roller V, made of suitable absorbent material, and
adapted to supply a proper quantity of oleaginous material to the periphery of the fillet roller A, to cause the adhesion of the metallic leaf E thereto, whereby the said metallic leaf will be removed from the side of the paper strip. And as the said fillet roller is moved forward over the surface to be decorated, the said metallic leaf may be caused to leave the oiled periphery of the fillet roller and pass to the said surface. When the fillet roller A is being heated, both the oiling roller V, and the package roll D may be removed from contact with the periphery of the said fillet roller. The guard T secured to the under v side of the shank I of the handle, serves to protect the said roller V.
A modification is shown in Figs. 2 and 3, in which a holding case Q, having a hinged side U, is provided for the package roll, the said holding case being pivoted at the point a, to the shank I of the handle, and provided with the delivering roller It for transferring the metallic leaf to the fillet roller. The delivering roller R is pressed toward the periphery of the fillet roller, by means of the spring S, and is held away from the periphery of the said roller by means of the button H, and the stud J.
I claim as my invention:
1. A hand tool for depositing leaf from a package roll comprising a heated roller, a handle therefor, means carried by said handle for supporting a roll of metallic leaf, and causing contact of the metallic leaf with the surface of the heated roller, a roller carried by the said handle for applying oleaginous material to the surface of the heated roller, and means for adjusting the position of said roller.
2. In a device of the class described, a heated roller, a handle connected thereto, a casing carried by the handle and adapted to support a roll of metallic leaf, a spring engaging with said casing for forcing the metallic leaf into contact with the heated roller, and means for holding said casing in raised position so that the metallic leaf is out of contact with said heated roller.
