'l'll' SAES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB HUBERLIN, OF NEW YORK, N. Y.
COMBINED ARDLREST AND WINDOW-GUARD.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAoon HUBERLIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, nave invented new and useful Improvements in Combined Armtestsand lVindow-Guards, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a combined arm rest and window guard, the object of the invention being to provide a simple, effective and presentable device of this character which may be conveniently applied to an open window to serve as an arm rest to a person looking out of the window and to relieve such person of the inconvenience of stooping and resting the arms on the sill, and which will also serve to prevent children from falling out of vhe window and is adapted to be compactly folded for storage or disposal in a convenient corner or place when not in use.
The invention consists of the features of construction, combination and arrangementof parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l is an inside view of a window showing the application of the invention. Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the device detached. Fig. 3 is a view showing the manner in which the device is adapted to be folded.
Referring to the drawings, my improved arm rest and window guard comprises a bar or rail 1 of wood or metal and any suit-able form to" serve the purpose, said bar being of a length to extend between the sides of a window frame and provided at its ends with reduced extensions or tongues 2 to project and fit within the guide grooves of the lower sash. The bar is adapted to be applied and removed by holding it at an angle to the horizontal and tilting it in an obvious manner so that the tongues may be engaged with or freed from the grooves, the arrangement of the bar when in operative position being shown in Fig. 1.
For the purpose of supporting the bar or rail at a suitable elevation above the base or sill of the sash frame, folding legs 3 are hinged at their outer or upper ends, as indicated at 4;, to the under side of the tongues 2, so as to adapt said legs to fold inwardly Specification of Letters Patent.

to a closed position beneath the bar or to be swung outwardly to a vertical position, in which, when the device is applied, they occupy the guide grooves in the window frame and rest upon the sill of the frame and thus support the bar in an elevated position above the sill. The hinged ends of the legs when the latter are swung outward bear against the tongues and prevent further outward movement of the legs, thus insuring stability.
By reference to Fig. 1, it will be seen that the bar 1 will extend across the lower portion of the window frame and partially guard or close the space left vacant by the elevation of the lower sash, in which position the bar may be used as an arm rest to relieve a person looking out of the window from the inconvenience of stooping to the necessary degree to rest the arms upon the. sill, and that it will also close the opening sufficiently to prevent children from falling out of the window. If desired, the center of the bar may be provided with a pendant 5 of a suitable ornamental nature to render the device attractive in appearance and to serve as a handle to facilitate its application, removal and transportation.
From the foregoing description, the construction and mode of use of my improved arm rest and window guard will be readily understood, and it will be seen that the invention provides a device of this character which is simple of construction, effective in use, capable of being manufactured at a low cost, and adapted to be folded so as to be stored or conveniently stowed in a corner or other place when not in use.
Having thus fully described the invention, what is claimed as new, is
A combined arm rest and window guard comprising a bar having end tongues, a handle pendant from the center of the bar, and legs hinged to the under side of the bar to fold inwardly parallel with the bar and to swing outwardly into engagement with said tongues, the latter serving as stops to limit the outward movement of the legs.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
