IMPROVEMENT nv BARREL-HEAD.
The` Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part ofthe same.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE RIGHTER, of Radnor, Delaware county, State of Ben nsylvania, have invented an Improvement in the Construction of Detachable Barrel-Heads; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
My invention consists of a mode of making a detachable barrel-head from a solid disk of wood,'by severing the same in the manner described hereafter, so as to eeonomize material.
In order to enable others to practice my invention, I will now proceed to describe the mode of carrying vthe same into eiect, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, which forms a part of this speciiicavtion, and in which- Figure l is an edge view of the disk of woodfrom which my improved barrelhead is formed 5' Figure 2 represents the same disk, as 'it appears ivlien converted into a barrel-head;
Figure 3, a plain view ofthe disk; and
Figure 4, a perspective View of thecompleted barrelhead. v I'rst make a wooden disk, A, tig. 1, of the diameter of the required barrel-head, and. in the edge of this disk make two saw-cuts, x and y, parallel with the two faces of the disk. I then make in the under-side of the latter a transverse saw-cut, m, meeting the eut x, so that a portion, a, fig. 2, is severed from the disk.
A transverse saw-cut, n, is also made in the under side of the disk,` and two saw-cuts, 'n' and n, in the upper side of the same, the last-mentioned cuts being at an angle to each other, as shown in g. 3. Two pieces,
li and d, are thus severed from the disk, thev remaining portion, e, of the latter consisting of a'semicircular piece, having an inclined ledge, f, o'n which rests part of the severed piece (l, the latter and the piece e forming with the wedge h, the detachable head of the barrel, while the portions a, and b may be used as parts of the opposite permanent head of the barrel.
' The edges of the portions l and e are bevelled, so as to enter the groves of the barrel, and after they have been adjusted to the latter, the wedge h is driven between the shoulder q, of the piece e, and the edges of the piece rl, thereby forcing both pieces tight to the inside of the barrel, from which they can be readily withdrawn, after first driving back the wedge.
It will be seen that while an eticient detachable barrel-head is thus produced, material is economized by obtaining pieces, a bavailable for the bottom of the barrel, the only piece wasted being the inclined strip .between the cuts n and n', and even part of this may be used for making thewedge.
1 claim as my invention, and desireto-secure by Letters Patent- Forming the head of a' barrel of a single disk of wood, in the manner described.
In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in-ftl1e presence of two subscribing witnesses.
GEORGE RIGHTER.
