CASTING-LADLE.

Be it known that I, DANIEL COLLIER, citizen of the United States, residing at Birdsbore, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Casting-Ladles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in casting ladles and the object is to providea tap for ladles of this class in which the accidental running away of the metal is over come.
It frequently happens in devices of this class that the rod carrying the plug for closing the tap will become warped or bent, and the plug instead of entering the tap opening will strike the edge thereof, thus allowing the entire contents of the ladle to run away before it can be closed.
In my present construction I have formed a funnel shaped cup intended to act as a guide for the plug, in which it :[its snugly when closed, and which insures the proper closing of the tap at all times.
The invention is more fully described in the following specification and clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing which shows a vertical sectional view of a ladle with my invention applied thereto.
The numeral 1 designates the ladle which may be of any desired shape and it has the usual tap opening 2 at its bottom. In this tap I place a removable sleeve 3 to the upper end of which is formed a cup. The end of the sleeve depends some distance below the lower surface of the ladle. The cup 4 rests on the bottom of the ladle and it projects somewhat above the upper surface of the brick lining 5 with which the ladle is furnished as usual. This cup is funnel shaped and is formed with Specification of Letters Patent.

The numeral 7 designates the plug for closing the tap opening 2. This plug is tapered to correspond with the inner wall of the tapered cup and is adapted to enter said cup in which it "fits snugly. The plug is provided with the usual raising and lowering means in the form of a lever S pivotally mounted to the side of the ladle and which raises the rod 9 to which the plug is secured, when it is desired to open the tap.
It will be seen that with my device the metal will enter the cup when the plug is raised, through the perforations 6 and that the plug need not be raised above the upper edge of the cup, so that when it is lowered it is absolutely sure of finding its proper position and closing the tap opening.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In a casting ladle, a funnel shaped cup removably secured in the bottom thereof at the tap opening, a sleeve formed integral with said cup and depending below the lower surface of the ladle, said cup having a series of perforations in its tapered wall, a vertically movable plug adapted to fit snugly in said cup and to close said perforations, and means for raising and lowering said plug, all substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
