Description

0. G. KLEIN,-
GHURN.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 9, 1909.
Patented July 6, 1909.
OTTO GRAG-OR KLEIN, OF PEORIA, ILLINOIS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 6, 1909.
Application filed April 9, 1909. Serial No. 488,854.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, O'r'ro GRAGOR KLEIN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Peoria, in the county of Peoria and State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Clnn'n, of which the following is a specification.
The invention relates to in'qprovcinents in churns.
The object of the present. invention is to improve the construction of churns, and to provide a simple, inexpensive and efficient one, capable of easy operation and adapted to quickly produce butter.
A further object of the invention is to provide a churn of this character, having a plu "ality of reversely rotating dashers, adapted also of independent use to arrange the churn to suit different conditions.
lVith these and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction and novel combination of parts hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claim hereto appended; it being understood that various changes in the form, proportion, size and minor details of construction, within the scope of the claim, may be resorted to with out departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of theadvantages of the invention.
In the drawing :Figure 1 is a vertical sectional view of a churn, constructed in accordance with this invention. Fig; 2 is a similar view, taken at right angles to Fig. 1.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts in all the figures of the drawing.
The churn comprises in its construction inner and outer reversely rotating dashers 1 and 2. The inner dasher 1 consists of a vertical stem and horizontally disposed open rectangular blades 3, extending outwardly from the stem at diametrically opposite points. The outer dasher 2 consists of a rectangular frame and horizontally disposed open rectangular blades 4, extending inwardly from opposite sides of the frame and alternating with the blades of the inner dashcr. The frame of the outer dasher is of a size to receive the inner dasher, and the alternate arrangement of the horizontally disposed blades permit the reverse rotary movement of the dashers. The lower end of the stem of the inner dasher is arranged upon the upper face of the bottom of the frame of the outer dasher, and is provided with a bearing 5, and the said outer dasher is also provided at the center of its bottom with a bearing opening (3, registering with the bearing 5 of the stem of the inner dasher and receiving a vertical journal 7, extending upward from the bottom of the churn body The ournal extends upward from a disk or head 9, which provided with a threaded stem 10 embedded in the bottom of the churn body. The journal connects and centers both of the dashers at the bottom of the churn body.
The churn body, which is supported by legs 11, may be of any desired construction, and it is equipped with a suitable cover 12, upon which is mounted a bearing bracket. The bearing bracket consists of upper and lower sections or members 13 and l t. The lower section or member 1a is composed. of inclined sides anda horizontal top connecting portion, and the upper member is constructed in a similar manner, its inclined sides being secured to the outer faces of the sides of the lower section. The horizontal connecting portion of the upper section or member is arranged in spaced relation with the top of the lower section or member to provide an intervening space for the reception of an upper gear 15, having a depending hub extension 16 extending through a central bearing opening of the top connecting portion of the lower section or member 14 of the bearing bracket. The hub extension and the upper gear are provided with a rectangular opening, and the stem of the inner dasher is provided with a reduced upper portion 17, squared at the top to conform to the configuration of the rectangular opening of the upper gear, but the opening of the upper gear and the upper end of the reduced portion of the stem of the dasher may be of any other non-circular shape. The lower end of the reduced portion is rounded and extends through a bearing opening of a lower gear 18, having a depending hub extension or leaf 1%) provided with a squared lower portion 20, which fits in a square openin 21 of the top of the outer dasher, whereby the latter is interlocked with the lower gear, but the opening 21 and the engaging lower end 20 of the sleeve or hub extension 19 may be of any other non-circular shape. The lower gear is also provided at its lower face with a projecting annular flange 22, forming an extension of the lower face of the gear and engaged by clips 23, secured to the upper face of the cover of the churn, whereby the lower gear is retained in place. The upper portion of the depending hub extension or sleeve 19 is rounded and arranged in the central bearing opening of the cover of the churn body.
The upper and lower horizontal gears mesh with a vertical gear 24L, mounted on a horizontal shaft 25 and secured to the same by a set screw 26, or other suitable means. The shaft is journaled in suitable bearings in alined bearings of brackets 27, and it is equipped at its outer end with an operating device preferably in the form of a wheel 28, having an eccentrically operated handle 29.
The reduced portion of the stem of the inner dasher detachably engagesthe upper gear and may be readily withdrawn from the gearing when it is desired to use the outer dasher only. The outer dasher is detachable from the sleeve or hub extension of the lower gear, and when the dashers are removed from the churn body, they may be readily separated so that either or both may be connected with the gearing. The outer dasher, which is equipped with the opposite blades, forms a double dasher, while the inner dasher provides a single dasher construction. When both dashers are used a triple effect is produced through the opposite arrangement of the blades of the outer dasher and the central arrangement of the blades of the inner dasher.
The cover or lid of the churn body is equipped with an opening 30, having a suitable closure 31 and adapted to permit water to be supplied to the churn body without removing the dashers. The churn body is also provided with a spout 32 and a drain opening 33, normally closed by a plug, or other suitable means, and in practice the churn body will be equipped with a transparent plate or pane to enable the operator to inspect the condition of the contents of the churn body. The lid may be secured on the body by hooks 3e and eyes 35, or any other suitable fastening devices, and a me tallic thimble 36 may be employed to prevent the lower end of the stem from wearing.
Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is z- A churn including a churn body having a cover, an outer dasher provided at the top with a polygonal opening and having a bearing opening at the bottom, said outer dasher being also provided at opposite sides with inwardly extending open rectangular blades, an inner dasher consisting of a stem provided at the lower end with a bearing and having a reduced upper portion and removably arranged within the outer dasher, the blades of said dasher being alternately arranged, a vertical pivot projecting from the bottom of the churn body and passing through the lower bearing opening of the outer dasher and extending into the bearing of the inner dasher, a lower gear arranged on the cover of the churn body and having a hub extension passing through the cover and fitting in the opening of the outer dasher and detachably interlocked with the same, an upper gear detachably interlocked with the reduced portion of the stem of the inner dasher, and an operating shaft having a vertical gear meshing with the upper and lower gears for rotating the said dashers.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aflixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
