UNITED STATES PATENT F IOE.
EDWARD M. I-IENLE, or PERRY, IOWA, ASSIGNOR TO WAGNER MANUFACTURING COMPANY, OF CEDAR FALLS, IOWA, A CORPORATION OF IOWA;
CHILDS WAGON, SLED, AND THE LIKE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 6, 1909.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD M. HENLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Perry, in the county of Dallas and State of Iowa, have invented. new and useful Improvements in Childrens \Vagons, Sleds, and the Like, of which the following is a specification.
This inventionv relates to children s wagons,
l0 sleds and the like, and has specially in view an attachment therefor which will readily adapt the same for coasting purposes.
With the above and other objects in view the invention contemplates the employment of a novel form of tongue clip which is used 111 conjunction with the usual tongue supports whereby the tongue may be held in a raised position when it is desired to use the vehicle for coasting purposes and also in 2 equipping the tongue supports with means whereby the same may be connected with a steering lever carried by the body of the vehicle, said tongue clip also serving to prevent the tongue dropping below a horizontal 2 plane.
In the practical application of the invention, minor changes in details and structural arrangements may be resorted to, a preferred and practical embodiment of which is shown in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view of the front portion of a wagon, showing the same equipped with the improved steering gear, and tongue clip. Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the tongue showing its connection with the tongue supports and clip, the body of the vehicle being omittpd. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the tongue c 1 3.
like characters of reference designate corresponding parts.
In the practical example of the invention set forth in the accompanying drawings 1 designates the body of the vehicle, the front end of which has upper and lower projecting flanges 23 forming bearings for a steering lever 4 provided with a controllinghandle 5. The lower portion of the said lever is preferably inclined forwardly as at 6 and has its extreme end 7 bent into the form of a hook,
the function of which will presently appear.
For illustrative purposes the invention has been shown in the accompanying drawings as applied to a wagon and in carrying out the same the body 1 has been. shown as supported by an axle 8 which has fastened thereto the usual tongue sup orts 9 and 10, the parallel outer ends 11 and 12 of which have mounted between them a trough-shaped tongue clip 13 which has a tight Wedging fit with the vehicle tongue 14, said clip being held in such wedging relation with the tongue by the tongue bolt 15 which passes through the said parallel outer ends of the tongue supports,
the clip and the tongue, whereby the tongue and clip are held in pivotal relation with said supporting ends. The rearend of the tongue clip 18 has its bottom projected to form a stop 16. The forward portion of one side of the tongue clip immediately in front of the outer end of one of the parallel ends of the tongue supports, has a laterally extending stop 17 formed thereon, which serves to engage with the top side of one of the said parallel ends when the tongue is raised and thereby limit the swing of said tongue. Preferably said top is arranged so that it will contact with said sup orting end when the tongue has just passe its center so that the same will be normally retained in an elevated position.
Immediately to the rear of the ends of the parallel su porting ends of the tongue supports, a substantially T-shaped casting is secured between the member of the supports, the head 18 of which is riveted to each of said members, and the body 19 of which is r0- vided with a slot 20 with which the 1100 ed end 7 of the steering lever 4 engages. The said casting is so arranged between the supporting members that the rearwardly projecting stop 16 of the tongue clip 13 will engage with it when the tongue is in a lowered position and serve to prevent said tongue being lowered below a horizontal plane. Preferably the tongue clip with its rear and side stops are integral, the same being stamped from a suitable piece of sheet metal.
From the foregoing it will be understood that the described tongue clip serves to hold the tongue in a raised position and also serves to prevent the same being lowered too far so that the same would contact with the ground. Another distinctive feature of the invention is in the T-shaped casting which in addition to serving as an abutment for the rear stop of the tongue clip, also serves as an eflective attaching means for the steering lever, so that the said lever can be readily poses.
What I claim is 1 1. A coasting vehicle provided with tongue supports, a tongue pivoted between said sup-' ports, a clip for holding said tongue eitherina horizontal or a vertical position, and a steering lever carried by the vehicle and connected with the tongue supports.
2. A coasting vehicle provided with tongue supports, a tongue clip pivotally mounted between" said supports, a tongue seated in said clip, and side and end stops carried by said clips for limiting theraising and lowering respectively of said tongue.
3.1 A coasting wagon provided with tongue supports,'a tongue clip pivoted between said supports, a tongue seated within said clip, a connecting member carried by said supports, and a steering lever connected with said connecting member.
4:. A coasting Wagon providedwith tongue supports, a tongue clip pivotally mounted between said supports and provided with a laterally projecting and a rearwardly proj ecting stop, a tongue seated within said clip, a connecting member carried by said tongue supports immediately in rear of said tongue clip and provided with a slotted portion, and a steering lever carried by the vehicle and having a hooked end for engagement with the slotted portionof said connecting member.
5. A coasting wagon provided with tongue supports, a tongue clip pivotally .mounted betweensaid su ports, a connecting member carried by said supports, a tongue seated within said clip, means for limiting the raising and lowering of said tongue, and a steer.- ing lever connected with said connecting member.
In testimony whereof, I allix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
EDWARD M. HENLE.
