GABMENT SUPPOBTER. Y LPPLIOATION HLM) JULY ao, 190e.
Patented July 6, 1.909. I
'UNITED STATEFiWTENT OFFICE.
ARTHUR G. DAVIS, OF MULBERRY, FLORIDA.
GARMENT-SUPPORTER.
To all whom Lt may concern:
Be it known that I, ARTHUR C. Davis, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mulberry, in the county of Polk, State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Supporters; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates generally to garment supporters, and has for one of its obliects to provide a simply constructed device which may be employed simultaneously as a belt clasp, and a garment suspending device.
With these and other objects in view the invention consists in a belt engaging loop having spaced lateral members having barbed terminals, a plate having apertures at the ends and engaging over said barbed terminals and rovided with a button, and a hook detachably secured to the plate.
The invention further consists in a belt receiving loop having spaced lateral projections provided with barbed terminals, a plate having apertures yieldably engaging over said terminals and provided with a longitudinal slot enlarged at one end, and a member having a relatively large hook at one end and a relatively small hook at the other end, the smaller hook having recesses at its sides and adapted to be passed through the slot when in an unusual position and to be irrimovably connected in the slot when in operation.
The invention further consists in certain novel features of construction as hereafter shown and described, and then specifically Vointed out in the claims, and in the drawings illustrating the preferred embodiment of the invention, Figure] is a side elevation of the improved device. Fig. 2 is a front elevation ofthe same. Fig. 3 is a front elevation with the button and the detachable hook removed. Fig. 4 is aside elevation of the loop portion ofthe device. Fig. 5 is a front elevation of the late portion of the device detached. Fig. 6 is a view of the plate from which the hook member is formed. Fig. 7 is an enlarged detail illustrating the manner in which the button is secured to the plate, in section on the line 7-7 of Fig. 1.
The improved device comprises in general a loop member through which the belt is de signed to be passed, a securing plate detach- Specification of Letters Patent.

ably connected to the loop, a button carried by the plate, and a hook detachably conneoted to the plate. The loop portion of the device is preferably formed from a single piece of wire and comprises a longitudinal portion l0 bent upon itself at the ends at 11-12 and thence bent at right angles to the portion l0 at 13-14 to form laterally pro jecting portions with the terminals of the lateral portions barbed at 15-16. The member l() together with its bends l1-12 and its extensions 13u14 forms the loop portion of the device and is designed to engage over a waist belt, the edges of the belt eX- tending into the spaces between the bends 11-12 and the longitudinal portion 10.
The plate portion of the device is represented at 17 and is provided with elongated apertures 18-19 at the ends for engaging yieldably over the barbed ends 15--16 of the loop, the plate having a slot 20 intermediate the ends with one end 21 of the slot enlarged, the slot designed to receive and detachably support the hook member which is formed from a plate or body 22 bent into a relatively large hook 23 at one end and a relatively small hook 24 at the other end, recesses 2,526 being formed at the root portion of the hook 24 The hooli 24 is narrower than the body 22, and is insertible through the longitudinal slot 2O of the plate 17, while the stock of the member' between the recesses 25-26 will iit the smaller portion only of the slot, so that the hook 24 may be inserted through the slot when the smallerI hook 24 and the larger hook 23 are disposed at right angles to the plate 17 with the stock between the recesses 25-26 within the narrower portion of the slot, so that after being thus inserted the hook may be turned in the same longitudinal plane as the plate and be supported immovably upon the plate when maintained in this position, as will be obvious. By this simple means when the loop member is disposed upon a waist belt and is retained thereby in vertical position the hooks 23-24 will likewise hang vertically and be in a convenient position to receive a loop portion of the skirt, or be employed for any other desired purpose.
When the improved device is to be applied the loop is disposed upon the belt as above stated, and the plate pressed over the barbed ends 15-16 of the members 13-14 the latter yielding sufficiently to permit the outer ends of the apertures 18-19 to pass over the barbs and be united beneath them and thus be retained in place by the resiliency 3f the members 13-14. When the device is to be detached a slight inward pressure upon the barbs or upon the members 13-14 beneath the barbs will release the plates as will be obvious` The button portion of the device is represented at 27 and is connected by a wire loop 28 to the plate 17, preferably near the barbed member 13. The button 27 is formed with a recess in its inner face to iit over the relatively sharp projecting barbed terminal of the member 13, and thus protect the person of the wearer, and the garments from abrasion. By this means a convenient button attachment is provided with which garments such as shirt waists, corset covers and the like may be connected in the ordinary manner by means of button holes.
The improved device may be employed upon any portion of a waist belt and utilized to support garments of various kinds and it is not desired therefore to limit the invention to support any specific garment or garments forme in any specific manner.
That is claimed, is
1. A device of the class described comprising a loop of resilient material formed with laterally extending terminals spaced apart and with recesses in the outer faces of the terminals, the portions of the terminals in advance of the recesses being reversely inclined, and a plate having spaced elongated apertures fitting over said recessed terminals and engaging in the recesses when force is applied inwardly.
2. A device of the class described comprising a loop of resilient material formed with laterally extending terminals spaced apart and with recesses in the outer faces of the terminals, the portions of the terminals in advance of the recesses being reversely inclined, a plate having spaced elongated apertures and with smaller apertures at opposite sides of one of the elongated apertures, a button having a concaved under face and bearing over one of said elongated apertures and forming a guard to the projecting terminal of the loop member', and a U-shaped pin extending through said button with its terminals clenched through said smaller' apertures, said plate fitting over the recessed terminals of the loop and engaging in the recesses when force is applied inwardly.
In testimony whereof, l afliX my signature, in presence of two witnesses.
