Description

W. WBUSTHOFP.
GRAIN DRILL.
No. 92,679; Patent ed July 1.3, 1869.
handedsome p ne cam.
Letters Patent No. 92,679, dated July 13, 1869- IMPROVEMENT IiN' GRAIN-DRILLM.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and part of the name.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, VlIhLIAlWI WEus'rHoFF, of Dayton, in the county of Montgomery, and in the State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Grain-Drills; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing, making'a-part-of-this speeifieat-imi, in which- Figure 1 is a plan view of my improvement, and
Figure 2 is a vertical central section of the same, on the line as a: of fig. 1.
Letters of like name and kind refer each of the figures.
My invention relates to a class of seed-drills, in which the drills are so constructed as to permit of their arrangement in one line, or in two parallel lines, as may be desired, and
It consists in the form and manner'of suspension of the box or funnel which conducts the seed from the hopper or seed-box to the drills, by means of which the operation of changing said drills. from a to like parts in single to a double rank, or the reverse, is greatly facilitated, and the durability of the devices increased.
In drills, as ordinarily constructed, the seed is discharged froin the hopper, or seed-box into a trough, or oblong box, situated beneath said hopper, which trough, or box extends downward, and to the front or rear, so as to communicate with the rubber tubes discharging into the drills.
In changing said diills from single to double rank, or the reverse, it is necessary to remove and reverse one-half of the number of said boxes, (11' troughs,
whereby the operation is rendered both tedious and disagreeable, and, by reason of the frequent changes necessary, the b0Xes,01 troughs are often deranged or broken.
To obviate these difficulties is the design of my im provement, which is fully illustrated in the annexed drawing, in which- A represents the seed-wheel shaft, suitably jour-.
nalled within bearings, so as to permit it to revolve.
Suspended upon said shaft, immediately beneath each seed-wheel, is a tunnel, B, the sides of which are compressed, sons to lglveita widtlu'in linewiththe shaft, sufficient only for the reception of said seed wheel, while its length in an opposite direction is much increased. g .i
The bottom of said funnel corresponds in size with the rubber tubes, which may be attached thereto, or may be secured within a board, as is desired.
It will be readily seen, that as constructed and suspended, the funnel can be turned'to the front or rear, for the purpose of conveying seed to the drills, and that it will operate equally well in either position, and also that the manner of suspending said funnel upon the shaft renders it almostcertain that no derangement can take place, and much increases its durability.
Having thus fully set forth the nature and merits of my invention,
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Suspending the funnel B, or its equivalent, upon or from the seed-wheel shaft A, substantially as and for the purpose herein shown and described.
In testimony that'I claim the foregoing, I have hereunto set my hand, this 22d day of May, 1869.
\VILL'lAM \VEUSTHOFF.
