Letters Patent No. 92,638, dated July 13, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN LIGHTNING-RODS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the lame.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NATHANIEL OTIS, of Charles City, in the county of Floyd, and in the State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Lightning-Rods; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to theletters of reference marked thereon, making a part of this specification.
The nature of my invention consists in the construction of a hollow lightning-rod, formed without a joint or break from top to bottom, as will hereinafterbe fully set forth and explained.
Figure 1 is a side view ofa portion of my rod.
Figure 2 is a view of the copper strip out of which the rod is formed.
All rods which are formed of more than one piece of metal, joined together, have their comlnct-ing-qnalities greatly impaired, and are in some cases rendered very unsafe. In order to obviate this diilieulty, I propose to form the entire rod and point ofa copper strip,
A, which is rolled so as to make the rod B. This rod is perfectly hollow, and, being formed entirely of one strip, is without a. single joint or break from the tip of the point to where it enters the earth. The machine by which the strip is rolled is very simple, so that the rods can he unrolled for transportation without any injury whatever to the copper, or need not be rolled until just ready to be put up.
Having thus described my invention,
What I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
Gonstruct-ing a lightning-rod of a single oblong strip of copper, with a. point upon its end, by forming said pointed strip into a hollow tube, substantially as shown and described.
