TOBACCO-PIPE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, EDWARD C. Bnnnmnm, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tobacco-Pipes, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to tobacco pipes and its object is to prevent the tobacco, fire or ashes from being blown out of the bowl, or otherwise scattered, especially when the pipe is smoked out of doors, by means of a cap hinged to the bowl and provided with an air tube mounted therein to centralize the draft to the bowl of the pipe so that the tobacco will burn from the center of the bowl outwardly to the side walls thereof and thereby promote an even and complete combustion of all the tobacco in the bowl, the air tube extending down beneath the cap to the top of the bowl and up above the cap a suflicient distance to prevent the tobacco, fire or ashes from being drawn up therethrough by lateral drafts blowing over the top of the tube, and said tube being movable longitudinally through the cap and provided at its lower end with a plate to operate in the bowl for packing the tobacco therein.

In the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention Figure 1 is an elevation of the pipe, and Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view.

The invention may be embodied in a pipe 3 of any kind but I prefer that the upper edge of the bowl 5 should be provided with a metal ferrule 41;. A cap (3 is hinged to the ferrule in a suitable manner at 7 and it is preferably provided with a spring locking device 8 to engage a shoulder 9 on the forrule. A tube 10 forming an air or draft fine for the pipe is arranged in a sleeve 11 which is mounted rigidly and centrally in the cap. This sleeve has an inturned flange 12 at its lower end and a spring 1 f is arranged on the tube 10 and confined between said flange 12 and a flange 15 at the upper end of the tube. The air tube carries, at its lower end, a packing plate 13 which engages the lower end of the sleeve and is adapted to operate freely in the bowl of the pipe when the tube is depressed. The sleeve 11 extends below the cap approximately to the Specification of Letters .Patent.

level of the top of the bowl and above the cap sufficiently to form a strong and substantial guide for the tube.

The cap should fit snugly against the ferrule when closed so that the draft to the pipe will enter through the tube. The tube extends down to the top of the bowl and up a snllicient distance above the cap to prevent the tobacco, fire 0* ashes from being drawn up through the tube by lateral drafts blowing over the top of the tube. Thus I prevent the tobacco, fire and ashes from being blown out of the bowl and scattered and at the same time a sufficient draft is admitted to the pipe. The tube concentrates the draft centrally within the bowl at the top of the charge of tobacco so that combustion will be promoted in the tobacco centrally of the bowl and extend outward to the side walls thereof in all directions. This provides for an even and perfect combustion of the tobacco and avoids the liability of the tobacco burning only at one side of the bowl as may occur when the draft is not centralized in the manner herein provided for. The spring holds the tube and the packing plate normally in the elevated position shown and it will be readily understood that by compressing the tube the packing plate may be caused to engage and pack the tobacco properly in the bowl, and this operation may be repeated as often as desired.

The invention enables the pipe to be smoked out of doors in cars, automobiles and vehicles in general, regardless of the wind or drafts and without liability of the tobacco, fire or ashes being blown out of the bowl. It also provides for an even, comparatively slow and complete combustion notwithstanding the wind or drafts.

lVhat I claim and desire to secure by Lettors Patent is:

A tobacco pipe comprising a bowl, a cap hinged to and inclosing the top of the bowl and provided centrally thereof with a vertically disposed sleeve, the lower end of the sleeve extending downwardly to substantially the level of the top of the bowl and being provided with an inwardly extending flange and the upper end of said sleeve extending above the top of the cap, an air tube longitudinally movable in said sleeve of a length substantially equal to the depth of the bowl, said tube extending in its normal position a substantial distance above the top of the cap and being provided at its upper end with an outwardly extending flange and at its lower end with a packing plate and a spring confined on the tube between the flange on the sleeve and flange at the upper end of the tube, said spring serving to normally support the tube with its pack- 4 ing plate at substantially the level of the top 10 of the bowl.
