Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, GEORGE SCI-IRADE and EDWARD J. GONKLIN, both citizens of the United States, and both residing at lValden, in the county of Orange and State of New York, have jointly invented a new and useful Die-Makers Filing-Tool, of which the following is a specification.
Our invention comprises a frame to move along the die, the frame carrying guides for the die, and a specially constructed file, forming improved apparatus for filing up and finishing the inner faces of dies, or other similar articles which require a true surface.
The object is to provide a convenient device for the true and perfect forming of the inner faces of dies; this we do by means of the combined action of a carrier sliding along the die, and the use of guides for the file.
Heretofore, as far as we are aware, the inner sides of dies have been filed into shape by using an ordinary file grasped in the hand, which passes through the die without rest or guide; this process requires great care to obtain the correct inclination, and with the most skilled workmen often results in the variation of bevel in the different faces of the die.
The different parts of the device will be more particularly described hereinafter.
In the drawings: Figure l is a view of one side of our improved apparatus in position on a die. Fig. 2 is a view of the reverse of Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is a perspective view without the die. Fig. L is the same as Fig. 3, with a die in position for filing, and Fig. 5 is the file.
The apparatus is provided with two handle pieces A, and A, for readily adjusting it into position on the die or removing it therefrom. At the end of each handle piece is a hooked or bent portion a, a, to receive the hand of the operator when holding or working the device.
The handle piece A, is connected to a standard B, by being secured to an ofiset Z), which is formed on the standard. The standard B, is adjustably connected with a cross bar C, by means of a screw 0, which passes through a slot (Z, in one end of the standard B, and threads into the cross bar C, behind it thus permitting the adjustment of the standard B, transversely to the cross bar C, for the purposes hereinafter described.
Parallel with the standard B, is the companion standard D, intended to lie against the other side of the die H. The die is shown in position in Figs. 1 and 4. The die II is held in a suitable support (not shown in the drawings) so that the entire weight of the apparatus rests on the file F when in operation. The standard D, is adjnstably connected to the cross bar C. by a set screw a, passing through a slot g, in the cross bar and taking into an arm or bent end I, of the standard. By this means the standard D, is adjusted to and from the standard B, so it will be accommodated to dies of different thickness which are to be operated upon.
The cross bar C, may be bent at the edges, where the arm I, lies on it, as shown at 70, or a groove and feather be provided to steady it. Similar means may be used for the same purpose atthe point where the standard B, is adjustably connected to the cross bar.
G, G, are guides or fingers secured to the standards, intended to lie on each side of the die so as to steady the frame and keep it in line during use, and to prevent cramping. On the standards B, and D, are two projectingfile guides each consisting of a tube or roller 1*, carried by a central pin p, on which the roller revolves.
In the face of each standard B, and D, are the rollers v, a, one above and one below the file guides; these are secured in place by central pins terminating in the standards or in offsets 0, 0', secured to the standard. The face of the rollers 41, and 11, should be only slightly in advance of the standards; these rollers are for guiding the file sidewise, for filing to a line or in a corner.
If desired the handle piece A, may be adjustably connected to a projection of the standard D, as shown in Figs. 2, 3, and 4, but this is for convenience in handling the tool.
The face and edge of the file are shown in Fig. This file in order to be combined with on apparatus must be of a peculiar construction. It is smooth on one face and of the same thickness and width throughout its length but can be flat or half round or any shape that is required on the y, and the rough side by 50. One side of the file is made smooth in order to slide readily over the rollers 1', '1", the edges also being smooth as shown in Fig. 5. The file is shown in working position in Fig. 1, and it will be observed that the side y, is in con tact with the rollers 1", in the same way the edges of the file are in contact with the rollers o.
In case the opening in the die which it is desired to file is so far away from the top of the die that the cross bar G strikes the top of the die before the rollers 7*, r, reach the point to be filed, the tool may be reversed as the file will operate on either side of the rollers r. In each case the weight of the frame of the filing device rests on the file and slides loosely along the faces of the die. Care must be taken that the frame does not bind on the die or become clamped thereto.
In operation the standards B and D are adjusted toward or from each other to accommodate dies of different thickness by moving the standard along the cross piece C, until the standards lie against the sides of the die. The standard B, is adjusted to give the file F, the proper incline when it lies against the rollers 1. The rollers 1' when resting on the back or smooth side of the file tend to keep it up to its work and secure an even face of the desired bevel.
Having described our invention what We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A tool for die makers use comprising a frame with two parallel standards adapted to lie on opposite sides of the die without binding thereon or being clamped thereto, bothof'said standards being adjustably connected to a cross-bar, one adjustable transversely and the other along said cross-bar, file guides on each of said standards and a smooth-backed file adapted to work in unison with said guides, substantially as shown and described.
2. In a die makers tool of the class described a frame comprising a cross-bar and two parallel standards connected to said cross-bar, means for adjusting the standards along and across the plane of said cross-bar and file guides on each of said standards, substantially as shown and described.
3. A device for use by die makers comprising two parallel elements carrying file guides projecting therefrom, said parallel elements being adjustably connected to a head piece and provided with handle pieces A, A, secured thereto, substantially as shown and described.
4. A device for use by die makers comprising a frame consisting of two parallel standards and a cross-bar connecting the same said three elements of the frame being adjustably connected to each other, and adapted to fit over a die without binding thereon or being clamped thereto, said standards being provided with fingers to lie against the face of the die, and projecting file guides, substantially as shown and described.
In a die makers tool of the class described, parallel standards, adjustably connected to each other by the medium of a cross-bar, said standards being each provided with file guides 7', projecting therefrom, parallel with the face of the die, adapted to rest on the file, and rollers V, V set in the face of the standards at the inner end of said file guides and at right angles thereto, adapted to contact with the edge of the file,substantially as and for the purpose shown and de scribed.
