Letters Patent No. 92,588, dated July 13, 1869.
IMPROVEMENT IN COPY-HOLDERS.
The Schedule referred to vin these Letters Patent and making part of the same."
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, HERvnY B. DENNY, of the city and county of Washington, and Districtof Columbia, v
have invented a new and useful Copy-Holder for Printers and Copyists; and I do hereby declare the following to be a sufficiently full, clear, and exact description to enable those skilled in the art to which it appcrtains, to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which are madea part of this speciti'cation.
lilly invention consists of a holder proper, of novel construction, adapted to hold the copy in a superior manner, and adjust the same as desired, and also to support, when necessary, a background-sheet orcloth, mounted by means of a rod or arm projecting in a convenient position from a base adaptedto be fastened, by a suitable clamp, to a convenient object, gbr, weighted, so as to rest on a table, saidl rod or arni benfurther preferably hinged to the base-plate, so as to allow the position of the holder to be readily changed, as desired, without moving said base.
In the drawings- Figure 1 represents a perspective view of mycopyholder, adapted to be applied to a printers type-case, a portion of which is shown in red outline, and representing, in red outline and broken lines, respectively, a copy Iand a backgroimd-sheet, as supported by the holder;
Figure 2 is an end view of the base-plate or clamp; and
Figure 3, a transverse section of the holder proper, on an enlarged scale, as represented invg. 1.
,A B represent a pair of rollers, preferably of rubber, provided with a metallic shaft, as shown, mounted in a suitable frame or bracket, C, the former, A, in xed bearings, and the latte'r, B, at one or both ends, in elongated` slots c, and pressed against said roller A by means of one or more suit-able springs, D, grasping the shafts of both, as shown, or otherwise suitably applied.
The rollers A B are made ot' suitable length to ac commodate the maximum width of copy, which is in.- troduced between them, as represented, in red outline, in iigs. 1 and 3, and held bythe pressure of the spring or springs I). l
a. l) represent handles or thumb-heads, one or more of which are applied to the shafts ot' one .or both of the rollers A B, by which to rotate them, to bring the part ofthe copy heilig used at a more convenient height, or to indicate, by the edge of the front roller, or otherwise, the line on which the compositor or copyist is at work. l
E represents a wire, or bar, or equivalent device, stretched across the frame and below it, between the rollers A B, and immediately behiiid the vertical representedin g. 3, for the support of a sheet of paper or cloth, indicated in black dotted lines in 1 and 3, to form asuitable background for copy written on transparent or semi-transparent paper, as tissue-paper, and which sheet may be attached to it in any suitable and convenient manner, and remain attached, or be removed when not required.
F represents a rod or arm, connected, at its upper or outer end, to the' rear side of the fra-'me C, at its centre, in any suitable manner, and at its lower or inner end, preferably, by means of a horizontal hinge, as shown, to abuse-plate, G', being further preferably curved or bent, so as to project upward and outward from its juncture with the base or fastening, as shown, the object of which is to support the holder at a convenient height, more or less near'the person. using it, as desired, and on either side of its fastening, as to bring it into convenient position for the compositor to use his capital or small-capital letters, and, in all its movements, to allow the holder to maintain the copy in a vertical position.
The sole of the base-plase G, as shown, is oblique, or inclined to the hinge of the rod or arm F, to adapt it for the angle of the type-case to which applied, a portion of which is represented in red outline in Iig. 1, and in section in fig.` 2. It is provided, at a suitable point, with a ola1np,l`:l, of suitable construction', adapted to engage with a bar of vthe case, as represented in said, figs. land 2, to attach said base-plate thereto.
The clamp H preferably consists of a pair of jaws, perpendicular to the plane of the base, hinged together at a point intermediate to their ends, as represented at h, provided, on their opposing surfaces, at their lower end, with .sprus h', or otherwise suitably adapted to engage, to the requisite extent, with the part to which applied, and pressed apart, at their upper end, bymeans of a suitable spring, h, to force the clamping-ends together.
By simply pressing together the upper ends of said jaws with the finger andI thumb, the device may be released.
One of the jaws of the clamp may be formed in one part with the base-plate, as shown, or it maybe otherwise attached thereto.
This form of clamp or fastening, besides its simplicity of construction and effectiveness, adapts the de.- vice to be readily applied and removed, when desired, in the shortest possible time, aud is therefore especially desirable.
For ordinary copying, the device may be provided with a weighted base, Aand adaptedxto stand on a table.
Having thus described my invention, the following is what I claim as new therein, and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
` l. I ela-im the holder, consisting of the, frame C c, rollers A B, spring or springs D, and handle or handles a b, adapted to operate substantially as described, for the purpose specified.
2. I claim the wire or bar E, or its equivalent, arranged substantially as described, for the purpose s et forth.
3. I claim the rod or arm F, connected to the holder in any desired manner, and to the base or fastening by a horizontal hinge, g, as represented and de' scribed, for the purpose stated.
eases 4. I eljaim the clamp H, consisting of a, pair of hinged jaws, provided, on their opposing faces, at4
their lower end, with spurs h', and pressed apart above their hinge by a. spring h, in combination with the base-plate G, :is and for the purposes specified.
