w. B. O. sTIRLrNa, OF BATAVIA, OHIO, AssI'GNOR TO HIMsELF .A N-D DALE O. OOWEN, OF sA MEPLAOE.
Letters Patent No. 92,550, 'dated July 13, 1869.
To all whom 'it may concer-n:
Be it known that I, W. B. O. STIRLING, of Batavia, in the county of Clermont, and State of Ohio, have invented a new and improved Recording-Desk or Table; and I do hereby'declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description, thereof',l which will enable yothers skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a top view of' my improved recordingdesk. C
Figure 2 is 'a vertical cross-section of' the same, taken through the line a; x, g. 1.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts. Y
My invention relates to that class of writing or recording-desks which are provided with a table or leaf, which is made vertically adjustable, in order 'to bring the pages ofthe record or other book placed thereon, when open, upon a level with the contiguous upper portion ofthe desk; and
The invention consists in the combination and ar-v rangement of va right and left-hand screw with the movable apron or leaf, and the frame ofthe desk, as will `be hereinafter fully described.
A is the frame ofthe desk or table, the top B of which may be made flat or inclined, as maybe desired.
vThe middle part of the forward side of the'top or cover B is out away, as shown in iigsl and 2, to form a recess to receive the tables C, which are placed side by side, and at a lshort distance apart, to accommodate the backs of the books.
The tables C are each made in two parts, c1 and c?.
The lower part, c2, moves up and down, horizontally, carrying the part c1 with it.
The part c is hinged, at its forward edge, to the forward edge of the other part c2, so the inner end of said part c1 may be raised or lowered to adjust it to the desiiied inclination for the record-book.
The parts el are raised and lowered by moving the blocks D, placed between the parts cl and ci, forward and back, as desired.
To the under side of vthe part ci, is attached a uut, E, having a right or left screw-hole formed through it; and to the cross-bars a* of the table-frame A, is attached a similar nut, F, having a leftor' right screw-v hole formed through it. v
G is a right-and-left screw, passing through the nuts E' andF, and having a hand-wheel, H, attached to its lower end. for convenience in operating it.
' 1t will be observed that while the right-hand screw is being turned in one direction-as,'t'0r instance, to elevate the leafthe left-hand screw must have a reverse movement, whose eiTect-is to likewise aid in elesists chiefly in allowing the use of a screw of. such length' that it will project but a few inches below `the bottom board of the desk, and thus, at all' times, be
within easy reach ofthe writer; while if a screw having a continuous right or -left-hand thread were employed,'upon lowering the leaf' to its fullest extent,
the hand-wheel H would be nearly twice the distance below the cross-pieces a', thereby not only detracting. from the appearance' of the desk as an article of furniture, and also occupying the space required for other uses, but greatly incommoding the writer in operating the screw for raising the leaf.
To the forward side of' the' table-frame A, is detachably attached a narrow leaf, I, so as to be `a continuation of the'table-top B, to support the forearm ofthe writer, when writing upon the lower part of the page.
The leaf I is provided with brackets J, the upper parts of which are provided withhooks, that hook intokeepers attached to the frame A, and the lower 'parts ofsaid brackets rest against the forward side of said frame, to support the said leaf in proper position.
When not required. for use, the leaf I may be detached iuv an instant, `and laid aside.
Having thus .described my invention,
I claim as new, and desireto secure by Letters Patentv v The combination of the right-andleft screw G, and nuts E F, with the hinged adjustable tables O, and frame A of the table or desk, all'constructed substantially as herein shown and described, and for the purpose set forth.
I W. B.v O. STIB-LING.

WILL. A. HAMILTON,
. EDGAR KAIN.
