To allwhom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES M. TooMBs, Jr., a citizen of the United States, residing at Tuxedo Park, in the county of St. Louis and State of Missouri, have invented new and useful Improvements in lVheels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to wheels, and in particular to car wheels, and the object of the invention is to provide anti-frictional bearings for such type of wheels, wherein wear is reduced to a minimum, and wherein the anti-frictional rollers carried by the wheel are readily accessible for lubricating or replacing when desired.
'With these objects in view the invention resides in the novel construction and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a side elevation of a wheel constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a central trans verse section of the same.
In the drawings the numeral 1 designates the axle of my improved wheel, to which is secured an annular hub 2, having a coin trally reduced annular trunnion or projection 3. The hub 2 is provided with a peripheral flange 3, and the inner periphery of this flange is provided with an annular extension et which in turn is provided with an annular reduced portion 5, in hub 2.
The rim 5 of my improved wheel is provided with an annular projection 6 upon its inner periphery, of a lesser thickness than that of the rim, so as to provide a wall and annular shoulder for the rim upon each side of the projection. The annular projection 6 is provided with a central recess or channel 7, which is also annular in form.
Adapted to be positioned within the an nular recess 7 of the rim 5 are a series of rollers 8, having trunnions 9 extending centrally therefrom upon each of their sides. The trunnions 9 are adapted to engage the projection 6 provided upon the rim, and are also adapted to engage the extension 4 and the face of the flange 3 of the hub, while the roller is adapted to be positioned within the reduced portion 5 of the hub. When the rollers 8 are thus positioned an annular securing plate 10 having an inner reduced portion 11 at its periphery and a central opening 12, is positioned upon the hub and the rim. The reduced portion 11 of the plate is adapted to engage the outer face of the projection (3 provided upon the rim 5,while the face of the plate engages the face of the hub 2 and the central opening of the plate engages the trunnion or projection 3 of the hub. The hub 2 and the plate 10 are provided with transverse openings 13, which are adapted to aline and receive a series of bolts let having their screw threaded extremities provided with suitable nuts 15, by Which the elements comprising my improvement are secured together.
It is to be understood that the axle and hub of my improved device are stationary, and that the rim 5 rotates around the hub, and contacts with the rollers. This construction prevents friction upon the rails when the car is rounding curves.
Erom the above description it will be seen that I have provided a comparatively simple, and inexpensive anti-frictional wheel, the parts of which are so constructed and arranged as to render accessible the roller bearings by simply removing the retaining elements by which the hub and face plate are secured together.
Having thus fully described the invention what is claimed as new is:
' 1. In a device of the character described, an axle having an integral hub provided with peripheral recesses adapted for the reception of a series of rollers having trunnions, a rim provided with a central projection having a channel adapted for overlying the rollers and the trunnions on each side of the rollers, and a plate having a peripheral recess adapted to engage the face of the hub, and securing means for retaining the hub and the plate together.
2. A wheel comprising an axle having an integral annular hub, a flange upon the hub, the hub being provided with a recess upon its periphery and having a central projection, roller bearings having trunnions engaging the recess of the hub and one of the trunnions engaging the periphery of the hub adjacent the flange of the hub, a rim having a reduced annular portion, the reduced portion being provided with a central annular recess, the recess adapted to engage the roller and the face of the reduced portion adapted to engage the trunnions of the rollers and the wall formed by one side of the reduced portion adapted to engage the flange of the hub, a face plate having a peripheral recess adapted to engage the outer shoulder provided by the reduced extension of the rim and to underlie one of the trunnions of the rollers and having a central recess adapted to engage the projection upon the hub, and means for securing the face plate to the face of the hub.
