Letters Patent No. 92,535, dated July 13, 1869.
INIPROVEMEN'I IN ELASTIC TACKLE-BLOCKS.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part of the lame.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J. E. J ONES, of Wiretown, in the county of Ocean, and State of New J ersey, have invented a new and improved Elastic Tackle-Block; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, which will enable those skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, in which Figure 1 represents a vertical transverse section of my improved tackle-block. I
Figure 2 is a side view of the same.
Figure 3 is a vertical transverse section of a modification of the same.
Figure 4 is a horizontal section of the modification.
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
The object of this invention is to construct a tackleblock, which is more particularly to be used on ships, and which is to be yielding to sudden motions of the sails, to prevent jars, and the consequent injuries to the sails, masts, spars, and rigging.
'Theinvention consists in interposing elastic cushions between the ends of the strap by which the block is suspended, and the sides of the block, so that whenever an unusual strain is brought to bear on the ropes that fit around the sheaves, the block will yield to such motion, and will be slightly expanded.
The invention also consists of a very simple and efficient method of attaching the elastic material, so that the same can be taken out or reinserted at will.
A, in the drawing, represents the checks of a tackle-block.
B is the spindle.
G are the sheaves.
- tion.
D is the strap, by which the block is suspended.
This strap is of suitable form, where it projects from the block, although I'prefer to make it of two pieces or bars, b b, that are, on the outer ends, connected by a pin or bolt, 0, as in figs. 1 and 3, and a bail, d, may also be arranged on the pin 0, as in fig. 3.
The lower or inner ends a of the pieces I) are bent outward, and fit into or through the slotted cheeks A of the block.
Between the outward-bent ends a of thestrap D and the upper ends of the slots in the cheeks, are interposed rubber or other elastic cushions E, which are firmly held 'in piace by means of a rod, 0, which is fitted through .the end a of the strap D, through the cushion, and into or through the plates f, secured to the block, as shown.
\Vhen the block is suspended from a fixed holder, and when the rope wound around its sheaves is violently pulled, the. block will be somewhat pulled away from the holder, and the spring E will be compressed, so as to transmit the violent motion gently to the holder.
I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent- The tackle-block, having its cheeks above the journal B, slot-ted to receive the elastic cushions E, which are adapted to be compressed between the arms a of the strap D and the upper end of the slot, all arranged as described, for the purpose set forth.
. J. E. JONES.
