SASH-FASTENER.
To all whom it may concern:
Beit known .that i, Fnnnnroir F. PrNNow, a citizen of the United States, residing at Juda, in the county of Green and State of jWisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sash-Fasteners, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawin s.
glhis invention relates to improvements in sash fasteners and more particularly those for use in holding or supporting the sash in any adjusted position and also locking the same in either a closed or partially open position.
The object of the present invention is to improve and simplify the construction and operation oi' devices of this character and thereby render them less expensive, stronger and more durable.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists of the novel features of construction and the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed, and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a front elevation of a portion of a window showing the application of the invention thereto; Figs. 2 and 3 are vertical sectional views; Fig. 4 is a detail horizontal section taken on the plane indicated by the line 4-4 in FiO. 2; Fig. 5 is a detail perspective of the ratchet strip; and Fig. 6 is a similar view of the pawl retracting lever.
In the drawings 1 denotes a portion of a window frame or the like in which is slidably arranged a sash 2 or equivalent element. Fived to the sash by means of screws or other fastenings 3 is a ratchet strip 4, the latter being arranged on the front face of the sash adjacent to one side and being in the form of a metal strip formed with a longitudinal row of perforations or seats 5 preferably of rectangular shape, as illustrated.
6 denotes a casing or support for two locling pawls 7, S which coact with the ratchet strip 4 and by means of which the sash may be held in any adjusted position and hence locked in either its closed or partially open position.
The casing or support 6 is of substantially rectangular shape, consisting of a U-shaped plate having at its ends attaching flanges 9 apertured to receive screws or similar fastenings 10 by means of which it is secured in a vertical position up on one side of the Window Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 467,465.
l frame 1. The two pawls or dogs 7 and 8 are pivoted intermediate their ends on pivots 11 carried by the casingand the inner ends of said dogs are angular in shape,` as `shown more clearly in Fig. 2, so as to engage the ratchet openings or recesses 5 in the strip 4. The outer ends of the pawls 7 and 8 are shaped to provide finger pieces and project outside of the casing to permit them to be readily engaged and operated. The inner ends of the pawls project in opposite directions, the upper pawl 7 having said end projecting upwardly and being adapted, when engaged with the ratchet strip, to prevent downward movement of the sash; and said inner end of the lower pawl 8 inclines downwardly and when engaged with the ratchet strip is adapted to prevent upward movement of the sash. Said pawls are pressed normally into engagement with the ratchet strip by the free ends of a leaf spring 12 which is secured to a cross rib 13 arranged horizontally in the casing 6 midway its upper and lower ends, said spring being seated in a notch or kerf 14 in said rib and having its free ends bent to engage the iinge'r pieces or ends of the pawls, as shown in Fig. 2. In order to permit either of the pawls to be held in an inoperative position to facilitate either the raising or lowering of the sash, a retracting lever 15 is provided. The body of the latter is preferably of U-shape, as clearly shown in Fig. 6, and from its closed end projects a Enger piece or handle 16. Its parallel ends or arms are disposed on opposite sides of the projecting end of the rib 13 and pivoted thereto by a pivot pin 17 so that said U-shaped lever can swing either upwardly or downwardly. When swung in either direction and over the finger piece of either of the pawls, it will actuate said pawl to a retracted position and hold it in such position, as will be readily understood upon reference to Fig. 3.
Having thus described the inventionvwhat is claimed is:
1. The combination with a ratchet strip, of a spring pressed pawl pivoted intermediate its ends and having one end to co-act with the ratchet strip and a finger piece at its other end and a swin ing loop-shaped member to take over the ger piece of the pawl and actuate the latter to a retracted position and retain it in such position.
2. The combination with a ratchet stri having a single row of ratchet seats, of a palr of oppositely disposed locking paWls pivoted intermediate their ends and having their inner ends projecting in op osite directions and adapted to engage t "e seats of said ratchet strip, the outer ends of said pawls being shaped to provide finger pieces, a spring for projecting the paWis into engagement With the ratchet strip, and a member for engaging the iinger piece of either paWl to retract the latter and retain it in retracted position.
3. The combination With a ratchet strip having a single row of ratchet seats, ci' a pair of opposite1T disposed locking pawispivoted intermediate their ends and having their in ner ends projecting in opposite directions and adapted to engage the seats of said ratchet strip, the outer ends of said pawis being shaped to provide inger pieces, a spring for projecting the pawis into en agement with the ratchet strip, and a loop-s iaped 1ever pivotaiiy mounted to swing into engagement with the Enger piece of either of the pawis to retract such paWi and hold it in retracted position.
In testimony whereof I hereunto aiiix my signature in the presence of tWo Witnesses.
