A. C. GRUHLKE.
CIGAR LIGHTER,
APPLICATION FILED APR.23. 1908.

AUGUSTUS C. GRUHLKE, OF WATERLOO, INDIANA.
CIGAR-LIGHTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 15, 1909.
Application filed April 23, 1908. Serial No. 428,756.
To all whom it may concern: H
Be it known that I, Amusrus C. GRUHLKE, citizen of the United States, residing at \Vaterloo, in the county of De-kalb and State of Indiana, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cigar-Lighters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in cigar lighters and pertains more particularly to that class of such devices in which the ignition is obtained through the medium of an electric spark.
The invention has for its object the provision of improved means whereby a torch or the like may be conveniently saturated with an inflammable fluid, such as alcohol, and means whereby an electrical spark Will be caused to ignite the said torch.
A further object is to provide asimple and improved form of sparking device.
The invention will be hereinafter fully set forth and particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the accompanying drawingsFigure l is a perspective view illustrating my improved cigar lighter. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the internal arrangement, the casing being shown in dotted lines. Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view. Fig. 4lis a detailview of the sparking device. Fig. 5 is a detail view illustrating a form of torch adapted for use with my cigar lighter.
Like characters of reference designate corresponding parts.
Referring to the drawings, designates a casing'of approximately L-shape provided with a horizontal compartment 11 and a vertical compartment 12. Located within compartment 11 is a receptacle or reservoir 13, adapted to contain an inflammable liquid and provided with spaced apart upright tubes 14 projecting through the top of said compartment, A filling opening 15 is also provided. The compartment 12 is arranged to'receive a set of batteries 16, and a spark coil 17 in circuit therewith. The sparker 'proper comprises a wire 18 coiled about a retaining pin 19 which is set in a block 20 of insulating material. Said block is provided with a slot 21, and an extension :22 of wire 18 projects vertically through said slot. The other end of said wire is connected to one of the battery terminals 23. The block 20 rests upon the top of compartment 11, and I prefer to cover the same as well as the tubes 14 with a suitable capor cover 24,
ceive the tubes let, and a central box-like chamber 26 inclosing the block 20 and spaced therefrom, the top wall of said chamber being provided with. a slotted depression through which the end of extension protrudes. The battery terminals 23 is connected to said cap or cover 24. The torches employedeach comprise a metal tube 27 containing a wick 28 of any suitable material. These torches tubes 14, the knobs 29 serving as closures for said tubes.
In practice when it is desired to secure a light for a cigar or the like, one of the torches is withdrawn from its tube 14 and drawn through the depression in cap or cover 24. This action deflects the extension 22 and closes the circuit to the bat teries. As the torch is drawn along said extension it will be finally released,,whereupon it will spring back to its normal position, thus breaking the circuit suddenly and producing a spark that will ignite the volatile liquid With which the torch is saturated. In this manner a suitable flame is secured for the purposes desired.
It is obvious that if necessary wicks may be employed to bring end of the torch.
Claims:
1. A cigar lighter comprising a U-shaped insulating block having a slot therein, a pin mounted in the sides of said block, a wire coiled about said block and having an extension adapted to work in said slot and forming a sparking terminal, and a cap provided with a box-'likechamber to receive said block, said chamber being slotted to receive the extension of' said wire and forming the second sparking terminal.
In a cigar lighter, the combination with a reservoir provided with upright tubes, of a source of electrical energy, a sparking coil, a coiled wire havingan extension formin a sparking terminal, and a cap provided with a slot through which said the liquid up to the term1nal projects, and also provided with chambers to receive said tubes, said cap forming the second sparkin terminal.
3. In a cigar lighter, the combination with a reservoir, provided with upright tubes, of a source of electrical energy, a sparking coil, an insulating block, a coiled wire carried by said block and having as provided with conical chambers to reare normally suspended in.
extension forming a sparking terminal, and In testimony whereof I aflix my signature, a cap fornilzig the;1 second splarfiingbterminal in presence ef two witnesses. and rovi e Wit a centre 0 am er to re- *4 ceive said block, said chamber having a slot AUGUSTUb GRUHLKE' 5 through which said terminal projects, said Witnesses:
cap being also provided with end chambers Enw. F. DUBEIRL, to receive said tubes. DOLLY HOUCKQ
