UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
HENRY P. TURNER, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-THIRD TO CHARLES P. HURLEY AND ONE-THIRD TO JOHN F. RIEHLE, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented March 2, 1909.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HENRY P. TURNER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois,
have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Advertising Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to advertising devices and particularly to that class of advertising devices characterized .by a transparent or translucent display device arranged about a gas burner or other source of light, and to which rotary motion is imparted by the ascending heat from said burner.
The object of my invention is to rovide a device of'the class mentioned, whic shall be simple of construction, of low cost to manufacture and one which may be readily attached to any form of burner or light in general use.
A further object of my invention is to provide a device as mentioned, which may be readily taken apart for cleaning or for other purposes. 7
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
With these objects in view In invention consists generally in an air tur ine wheel, the veins and rim of which are formed integrally, and a depending cylindrical member of transparent or translucent material detachably connected to the wheel.
My invention further consists 'in various details of construction and arrangements of parts, all as will be hereinafter fully described, and particularly pointed out in the claims.
My invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification and in which,
Figure 1 is a pers ective View of an advertising device embo ying my invention in its preferred form, Fig. 2'is a vertical section thereof, illustrating the device supported upon the globe of a as burner, Fig. 3 is a top p an view thereof, ig. 4 is a detail sectional view and, Fig. 5 is a view similar to Fig. 4 with the parts detached.
The wheel ortionof the device is formed of a single dis r l of sheet metal, the edgeof which is bent back upon itself a distance as at 2 and then bent downwardly forming a depending annular flange 3. The veins 4 are formed by slitting the disk radially as at 5 and also with the short transverse slits 6, after which they are turned diagonally as shown in several figures of the drawings. The center portion 7 is left solid and is provided with an indentation 8 to receive the supporting member. The horizontal rim 1-2 is slit at intervals forming the tongues 9 which are bent downwardly and constitute with the flange 3 clamps to hold the display device.
The display device comprises a cylinder 10 of transparent or translucent material having a metal binding 11 and 12 for its up er and lower edges respectively. The binding or rim 11 slips between the flange 3 and the tongues 9 which clamp it securely in lace, however the portion 10 may be readi y detached for cleaning or other purposes. The device is particularly designed as a barber's sign and to this end the cylinder is provided with the usual helical red, white and blue stripes. The device is sup orted in such a manner that the cylindrica member or display device surrounds the'light as shown in Figs. 2 and 4 of the drawings. The device may be supported directly upon the tip 13 of an electric bulb 14, the tip entering the indentation 8. If supported upon a globe 15 of a gas burner, a supporting device is provided which comprises a spider 16 adapted to restupon the top of the globe and having a vertically extending post 17 to engage the indentation 8.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
In a device of the class described, an air turbine wheel havin a horizontal rim and a depending annular ange on said rim, and a depending member of translucent material having its upper end arranged about said flange and portions of said rim being bent downwardly forming clamping tongues to clamp the edge of said depending member against said flange, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
HENRY P. TURNER.
