WASTE-SUPPORTING ATTACHMENT FOR JOURNAL-BOXES.
- To all whom it 'may concern:
Be it known that I, ROBERT A. BrLLiNG- HAM, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of St. Marys, in the county of Elk and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Waste Supporting Attachment for J ournal-Boxes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The object of my invention is to provide a waste supportin attachment for journal boxes, the journa boxes being provided with lateral grooves in which the members of my attachment may be slid, there being grooved lugs disposed at the forward ends of the side members to permit of a front waste retaining member being slid into position. The front waste supporting member has its upper terminal curved outwardly and this terminal is adapted to engage the lid of the journal box, by which it may be pressed inwardly, the upper terminals of the side waste retaining members converging so that they are adapted to be disposed in close proximity with the journal to prevent the waste from. assing around the ournal under the brass. he attachment also prevents the waste from working forward and hanging out of the journal box, thereby freeing the inner end of the journal from its waste and preventing the lid from closing.
The following more complete description of the invention will point out in greater detail the characteristics in construction a'nd the ob'ects of the invention.
In t is specification I will describe the referred form of my invention, but it wil be understood that I do not limit myself thereto as I consider myself entitled to all forms and embodiments of the invention which may be held to fall within the scope of the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figures, in which- Figure 1 is a sectional elevation on the line l 1--1 of Fig. 2 showing a car journal box in which my attachment has been introduced; Fig. 2 is a sectional elevation on the line 2v2 of Fig. 3; Fig. 3 is a sectional view on the line 3-3 of Fig. 2; Fig. 4 is an enlarged fragmentary perspleetive view of the journal box, showing t e lateral grooves or guides Fig. 5

' retaining members; and Fig. 6 is a perspective view of the front waste retaining member. By referring to the drawings, it will be seen that the car journal box 1 is constructed in the usual form, but that there are on each side of the journal box, lateral flanges 2 which are connected at the rear end by a perpendicular member 3, the lateral flanges 2 eing adapted to serve as uides. A journal 4 projects i1 to the manner, this journa 4 having a collar 5 and a shoulder 6, there being a brass 7 and a wedge 8 in the journal box 1 as is well known to those familiar with the art. At each side, at the interior of the journal box is disposed a side waste retaining member 9, this side waste retaining member 9 having an outer flange 10 at its bottom, this flange 10 being adapted to slide in a groove or guide 11, formed by the lateral flanges 2. As will be seen in Figs. 1 and 4, the guides 11 are disposed at some distance above the bottom ol` the journal box and when the side waste retaining members 9 are slid into position they will be su ported with their lower terminals at some distance from the bottom of the journal'box 1. The upper terminals of the side waste retaining members are curved and are dis osed inwardl so that when they are in p ace, they will e in close roximity to the journal 4. 'Each of the si( e waste retaininfr members has a kerf 12 at its up er side, this kerl being near the forward endgoi the member, that portion of the member between the kerf 12 and the forward end being adapted to be curved in the direction of the collar 5 on the journal 4, as shown by a dotted line in Fig. 1. At the front or forward end of the side waste retaining members 9 are secured grooved lugs 13, these lugs extending below the members 9 to a position near the bottom oi the car journal box.
When the side members 9 have been lacedin position by sliding the llanges 10 1n the uides 11, a front waste retaining member 14 is slid into position in a groove 15 in the lugs 13. The up er end of the iront waste retaining inem er 14 is curved outwardly at 16, this ortion 16 being adapted to rest against' t 1e lid 17 of the car journal box 1. The upright member 3 between the flanges 2, prevents the flange 10 from traveling too far 'rearwardly and there is, therefore, no danger of the side members 9 coming in contact with the shoulder 6 of the journal 4. When packjourna box in the usual ing has been introduced at the bottom of the journal and at both sides below the terminals of the side waste retaining members 9, the front waste retaining member 14 is slid into position in the groove 15 With its upper terminal 16 extending outwardly. Lubrieating oil is then inserted in the journal box, and this lubricating oil passes through orifices 18 to the waste. The lid 17 is then closed and -by this action, pressure is exerted on the terminal 16 of the front waste retaining member 14 to more securely hold the member 14 in its place and also to hold it against the pressure of the .waste or packing.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a waste supporting attachment for journal boxes, a journal box, lateral inner guides on the journal box, side waste retaining members which have their lower terminais disposed in the guides respectively, grooved lugs secured to the front of the said side Waste retaining members respectively, and a front waste retaining member which is adapted to slide in the grooved lugs, the front Waste retaining member having a surface which is adapted for lying against the journal box to be pressed inwardly thereby. 2. In a Waste supporting attachment-for journal boxes, a journal box, lateral inner ides on the journal box, two oppositely isposed side Wastev retaining members, flanges thereon, the llanges bein ada ted to it and to slide in the said latera gui( es, the
upper terminals of theside Waste retaining members converging so that they are adapted to lie in close proximity to the journal, grooved lugs secured to the front of said side waste retaining members respectively, and a front waste retaining member which is adapted to slide in the grooved lugs.
3. In a waste supporting attachment for journal boxes, a journal box, lateral inner guides on the journal box, side waste retaining members flanges thereon, the flanges being adapted to fit in and to slide in the said lateral guides, the upjier terminals of the side Waste retaining mem ers converging so that they are adapted to lie in close roximity to the journal, grooved lugs securedjto the front of said side waste retaining members respectively, and a front Waste retaining member which is adapted to slide in the grooved lugs, the upper terminal of the front Waste retaining member being disposed outwardly and being adapted to lie against the lid of the journal box, being pressed inwardly thereby, there being orifices in the waste retaining member.
4. In a waste supporting attachment for journal boxes, a journal box, lateral inner waste retaming members res actively, the l grooved lugs extendin to the ottom ofthe journal box, and a ront waste retaining member which is adapted to slide in the grooved lugs.
5. In a Waste supporting attachment for journal boxes, a journal box, lateral inner guides on the journal box, side waste retaining members, flanges thereon, the flanges being adalpted to iit in the said lateral guides, groove( lugs secured to the front of the said side waste retaining members respectively, and a front waste retaining member which is adapted to slide in the grooved lugs, the front Waste retaining member having a terminal which is dis osed outwardly and which is adapted .to he against the .lid of the journal box to be pressed inwardly thereby, there being orifices in the Waste retaining members.
6. In a waste supporting attachment for journal'boxes, a journal box, side waste retaining members in the ournal box, grooved lugs secured to the front of the said sidel waste retaining members respectively, and a front waste retaining member which is adapt` ed to slide in the grooved lugs, the front waste retaining memberl having a terminal which is adapted to lie against the journal box to be pressed inwardly thereby.
7. In a waste supporting attachment for journal boxes, a journal box, lateral inner' guides on the journal box, independent side waste retaining members, flanges thereon, the flanges being adapted for ittinff vin the said lateral guides, the upper terminas of the side waste retaining members converging so that they are adapted for lyinO in close proximit to the journal, grooved llugs secured to the ront of said Waste'retaining member respectively, and a front waste retaining member which is adapted for sliding in the grooved lugs to hold the side Waste retaining members in place and also to prevent the waste from working forwardly.
