ALFONSO CLAUDE FRENCH, OF DAINGERFIELD, TEXAS.
PLOW AND SWEEP HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 9, 1909.
Application filed August 31, 1908. Serial No. 451,020.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFoNso CLAUDE FRENon, a citizen of the United States, residing at Daingerfield, in the county of Morris and State of Texas, have invented a new and useful Plow and Sweep Holder, of which the following is a specification.
This invention has relation to a plow and sweep holder and it consists in the novel construction and arrangement of its parts, as hereinafter shown and described.
The object of the invention is to provide a simple and effective means for securely holding a sweep in proper position at the lower end of a plow standard, and, at the same time, to provide means for holding the plow-point in a similar position.
The holder consists primarily of binary plates or members which are substantially wedge-shaped longitudinally, and which are provided upon their adjacent faces with ribs and intervening furrows which are adapted to intermesh with each other, whereby the said plates are held against relative rotary movement with relation to each other. One of the said plates is provided upon its forward face with lugs which are adapted to engage the inner sides of the lower portion of the plow standard and which hold the said plate against edgewise movement. The other plate is provided with a lug which is adapted to lie over the upper edge of the sweep, and both of the plates are provided with elongated perforations which are adapted to receive the heel bolt which also passes through the standard and the plowpoint. By reason of the fact that the said members are wedge-shaped as indicated, a variety of adjustments may be attained, where y the sweep may be pitched at a desired angle with relation to the standard, and also when the sweep is not used the parts may be assembled whereby they. in connection with the heel bolt, may effectually hold the plow-point, and this ma be done irrespective of the configuration o the lower portion of the standard.
Figure 1 is an edge elevation of the holder applied. Fig. 2 is a sectional view of the same. Fig. 3 is an edge elevation of the holder, showing the parts reversed. Fig. 4 is a similar view of the holder showing the parts adjusted longitudinally. Fig. 5 is a side elevation of the upper portion of one plate of the holder.
The holder consists of the plates or members 1 and 2, both of which are substantially wedge-shaped in cross section longitudinally, and which are provided upon their inner surfaces with the ribs 3 and 4 respectively and the intervening furrows. The plate 1 is rovided with an elongated slot 5, and the p ate 2 is provided with an elongated slot 6. The plate 1 is provided upon its forward face with the lugs 7, 7, which are located at the opposite ends of the said plate, and the plate 2 is rovided upon its rear face with alug 8. he plate 1 is adapted to bear against the rear edges of the standard 9 and the In s 7 are adapted to pro'ect between the side portions of the sai standard, and thus afl'ord means for preventing the said plate 1 from turning or twistin in its position upon the said standard. he heel bolt 10 passes transversely through the plowpoint 11, and throu h the lower portion of the standard 9, an also through the slots 5 and 6 of the plates 1 and 2 respectively. The nut 12 is screw-threaded upon the rear end portion of the bolt 10 and is ada ted to bear against the rear side of the p ate 2. The intermediate portion of the sweep 13 bears'against the rear side of the plate 2, and the upper edge of the said swee is located under the lug 8 mounted upon t e rear portion of the said plate 2. Thus, it will be seen that when the parts are assembled, as de scribed, the sweep will be positive] held in proper position with relation to t e lower portion of the standard and the plowoint, and that the parts will be compactly he d together and braced against any lateral strain or tendenc to twist relative to each other. It will also e seen that by shifting the plates 1 and 2 longitudinally, the transverse thickness of the material of which the said lates are composed may be increased or iminished, as desired, by bringing the thicker ends of said plates or members toward each other, or by moving the said thicker ends away from each other. It will also be seen that the plate 1 may be reversed in its position 11 on the lower portion of the standard 9, an the thicker end portion of the said plate 1 may be upwardly disposed or downwardly dis osed, as desired. Thus, means is provide for varying the angle at which the sweep will be presented to the ground. Also when the sweep 13 is dispensed with the nut 12 may be screwed up a ainst the rear surface of the plate 2 and sai plate ma be adjusted longitudinally as above descri ed.
Thus means is provided for holding the plowpoint in position, and, should the configuration of the lower ortion of the standard be such as to throw t e rear surface of the plate 2 out of parallel relation uith the forward upper portion of the point 1 when the plates are in one position the plate 1 may be re versed in its osition, whereby the rear surface of the said plate 2 may be brought into parallel relation with the upper portion of the plow-point. Thus, the nut 12 may be caused to fit squarely against the rear sur face of the said plate 2.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure, by Letters Patent, is
The combination with a plow standard, a sweep and a heel-bolt, of a sweep-holder secured to the standard by the heel-bolt, and composed of two adjustable wedge-shaped members, one of which is provided with means for engaging the plow standard, and the other ith means for engaging the sweep, both of said members havin elongated slots for the reception of the heelolt.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ALFONSO CLAUDE FRENCH.
