UMBRELLA-NOTCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 2, 1909.
Application filed. January 30, 1906. Serial No. 298,643.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK A. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, and resident of Naugatuck, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Umbrella- Notches, of which the followingis a specification.
My invention relates to so-called. umbrella notches and particularly to an "umbrella notch formed from a suitable blank; and it has for its object to simplify and to reduce the time and cost of manufacture of umbrella notches.
For this purpose my invention consists in certain novel features of. construction set forth in the following specification and shown in the accompanying drawings which set forth the article in different stages of manufacture, and in which stamped blanks from which the umbrella notch is constructed. Figs. 3 and 4 are elevations thereof. Figs. 5, 6, and 7 are plan views of the umbrella notch. Figs. 8, 9 and 10 are sectional elevations of said umbrella notch. Fig.I 11 is an elevation of a completed notc Similar characters of reference designate corresponding parts throughout the several views. I
In the drawings10 desi nates a blank from suitable material such as sheet brass or sheet steel by means of a properly constructed die, so as to provide a central disk 11, with a number of radial arms 12 equally spaced and of approximately the shape illustrated in Fig. 1. circular contra disk 11 is, simultaneously; with the punching out of the arms, notched between said arms as sho'wnto remove suf, ficient material to allow for proper closing. as hereinafter more fully explained. The blanks thus prepared are then passed die in which a depression or dou le bend 13 is made in each of the arms intermediate of their inner and outer ends; and the outer ends of the arms then bent downwardly;
This is accomphshed with a clip Figures land 2 are plan views of the Iby They said arms being bent so to a 27th day of January as shown in Fig. 4.. The blank is now ready to have its central disk cup ed or formed lntoa cup shaped article as s own in Fig. 8.
able punch, the arms of the the same time bent parallel to the axisof the cup as shown. The notches 14 cut in the circular disk as reviously explained are thereby closed ank being at up into a position caving no superfluous material which would require drawing out or tend to buckle the cup, and the lower portion of the arms 12, in closing extends the length of the tubular body formed (Fig. 11). The depressions 13 are then contracted and the groove 15 given the desired form shown in Fig. 9
by the action of divided dies, the arms being maintained equally spaced by suitable interposed guide pieces. The final step is then to punch out the bottom 16 leavlng a complete umbrella notch shown in Figs. and in all respects as strong and perfect as the present form of cast notches finished by turning and sawing out. The notch is suitable for use in connection with the umbrella runner and for all applications to which the usual notch is put.
What I claim as new and desire to secure Letters Patent of the United States is As a newiarticle of manufacture, an umbrella notch comprising: a tubular bod and a number of arms integral therewit extending parallel to the vertical axis of said body, the lower portion of said armsbein of greater width than the upper portion and closing to form an upper extension of said tubular body, and the remaining portion of as to form a groove whose upper flange is formed by a single bend of said arms and whose lower flange y a double bend of said arms.
