UNITED s-"rarns PATENT onnron ALFRED H. S. SWA N, OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK, ASSIGNOR TO ROCHESTER STAMPING 00., OF ROCHESTER, NEW YORK, A GQRPORATIQN OF NEW YORK.
No. eio,eo5.
Specification of Lettera fiatent.
Yatented Jan. 28, 19053.
Application filed May S, 1903. Serial No. 131,287.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ALFRED H. S. SWAN, of Rochester, in the county of Monroe and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handles for Removable Closures for Receptacles; and 1 do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being bad to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification, and to the reference-numerals marked thereon.
"The present invention relates to handles for covers or closures of wash boilers, pails or other receptacles in which it is desirable at times to support the cover or closure While inspecting or-attending to the con tents of the receptacle, and it has for an object to provide a construction which may be inexpensively manufactured and which will be strong and durable in use. i
To these and other ends the invention consists in certain improvements and con1binations of parts all as will be hereinafter-more fully described, the novel features. being pointed out in the claims at the end of the specification.
In the drawings: Figure 1 is a sectional View of a wash boiler embodying my invention. F lg. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view .of the handle, a portion of the closure being shown; and Fig. 3 is a perspective view of one of the standards or uprights.
Referring more particularly to the drawings, 1 indicates a suitable receptacle, such for instance as a wash boiler, and 2 the closure thereof. Secured preferably in the center of the closure is a handle which comprises a pair of uprights or standards 3 having attaching portions 4 at their lower ends and connected at their upper ends by a handle or grip portion, the andle or grip portion being preferably formed so arately and in the form of a piece of W00 5 seated at its ends in sockets 6 provided in the standards, and held in the sockets by a tie rod or pin 7 passing centrally through art 5 and flattened at its ends over the stant ard to revent its removal. Formed on opposite sides of the standards are rigid hooks 8 which extend outwardly and downwardly.
In order that thehandle may 'be manufactured very cheaply and that the hooks or supporting devices me have a maximum-s -tion 10 extenr ing to the attaching portion to strengthen the bond between the said attaching portion and the standard. The hooks extend from the standards in a plane with the latter.
To use the invention, the cover is removed fromthe rece tacle and the hooks 8 are engaged with tile rim in the manner shown in Fig. 1. By having a pair on each side it is not. necessary for the use to turn the cover to any position as would be the case if' only one pair were employed, and further if one pair should become broken then the other pair could be used exclusively.
I claim as my invention:
1. A handle for covers or closures comprising a grip connected by t e grip portion and a pair of downwardly turned hooks rigid with the standards on one side of the handle.
2. A handle for covers or. closures comprising. a grip ortion, a pair of standards connected b t e grip ortion, and a pair of downwardly o ening ooks rigid with the standards on eacli side of the handle.
3. A standard for handles formed from a single blank of sheet metal and having a socket at its upper end, a laterally extending attaching portion at its lower end, and rigid downwardly turned hooks on opposite si es.
4. -The combination with a rece tacle and a removable closure therefor, of a andle for the closure arranged centrally thereon and comprising a pair of upright-s, a rip. portion connecting the uprights and a cownwardly 1portion, a pair of standards wardly openin supporting hooks rejecting from the uplri fits on each side of the handle. 6. '1 he com ination with a receptacle and a. removable closure therefor, of a handle 5 arranged centrally on the closure and comprising a. grip IFortion. and sheet metal uprights arrange at the ends of the grip portion and grovided' with hooks formed from the same lanks.
. ALFRED H. S. SWAN.
