UNITED STATES PLATENT OFFICE.
JOHN CLIFFORD, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, ASSIGNOR 'lO L. WOLFF MANUFACTURING COMPANY,
OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, A CORPORATION OF ILLINOIS.
OVERFLOW AND WASTE PLUG OR VALVE FOR LAVATORIES, BATHS, 85c.
Application filed April 13,
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN CLIFFORD, a citizen of the United States, residing in Chicago, in the county of (look and State of Illinois, have invented a new andv useful Improvement in Overflow and I/Vaste Plugs or Valves for Lavatories, Baths, &c., of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in overflow and waste plugs or valves for lavatories, baths and other fixtures.
The object of my invention is to provide an overflow and Waste plug or valve for lavatories, baths, &c., with a lifter mechanism of a simple, efficient and durable construction, by means of which the valve may be opened" by a simple turning movement of the lifter knob or handle, and by which the waste valve or plug may be readily set or held in its open position at any point of the lift, and in which the lifter mechanism will be composed of but few parts, and capable of being easily and conveniently applied or removed as may be required.
My invention consists in the means I employ and herein show and describe for practically'accomplishing this object or result; that is to say it consists, in connection with a waste outlet of a lavatory, bath or other basin, of a vertically moving valve or plug for closing the same, a lifter rod connected at, its lower end with the stem of the waste valve or plug, a rotatable lifter knob or handle, having a swiveling or rotatable connection with the non-rotatable lifter rod, a lifter sleeve removably connected to the lifter knob and turning therewith and furnished with coarse external screw threads, a non-rotatable thimble or nut secured to the overflow strainer or other stationary support and furnished with internal coarse screw threads engaging the external coarse screw'threads on the rotatable lifter sleeve, and an adjustable connection between the rotating lifter knob or handle and the nonrotatable lifter rod, the lifter rod preferably extending up through the overflow channel of the wash bowl or other basin.
My invention further consists in the novel construction of parts and devices and in the novel combinations of parts and devices herein shown and described.
In the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, Figure 1 is a side elevation, partly in vertical section of a Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented April 27, 1909.
Serial No. 367,962.
waste plug or valve and lifter mechanism therefor embodying my invention and applied to a lavatory; l ig. 2 is an enlarged detail central vertical section through the lifter sleeve. Fig. 3 is a detail view of the rotatable lifter sleeve.
In the drawing A represents a lavatory or other basin having a waste outlet B and valve or plug C for closing the same, and provided with an overflow channel A, and removable strainer D secured in a suitable seat or recess a at the upper end of the overflow passage A by a suitable strainer holder 1). The waste outlet or valve shell B is furnished at its upper end with a seat b for the valve 0, and with guide lugs l) b through which the stem C of the valve or plug C extends. The stem C of the valve plug C has its lower portion reduced in size, which extends loosely through an opening f in the foot or bent end f of the lifter rod F, thus forming a shoulder C for engagement with the lifter rod. The lifter rod is internally screw threaded at its upper end to receive the threaded end It of the adjustable connecting stem U, by which, in connection with the jam nut- 71. the lifter rod is adjustably connected with the rota table lil'ter knob or handle Ii, by which, in connection with other cooperating parts, the lifter rod is operated. The adjustable connecting stem II has a head 72 at its upper end furnished with a slot 72/ for turning this adjustable stem in the lifter rod F. The knob or handle K has a socket K to receive the head 7t and thus connect these parts while permitting the knob or handle to turn freely in respect to the connecting stem II and litter rod F; the connecting stem I-l being non-rotatable in respect to the litter rod F when the jam nut 71* is snugly set down.
M is the lifter sleeve, the same being removably connected to the knob or handle K by screw threads 7:, m on the meeting ends of these parts, so that the lifter sleeve will rtate with the rotary knob or handle K. The rotary lil'ter sleeve M is furnished with coarse external screw threads m which engage corresponding screw threads n on the stationary thilnble N. The screw sleeve or thimble N is preferably furnished with a flange n at its upper end and with external screw threads by which it is reinovably fixed to the overflow strainer l). The knob or handle K is preferably provided with a porcelain cap K secured thereto by a threaded coupling ring K I claim:
1. In a lavatory, bath or other basin, the combination with the waste outlet or sleeve, of a waste plug furnished with a shouldered stem, a curved or bent lifter rod engaging the shoulder of said stern, an overflow strainer above and at the rear of said waste plug, an internally screw threaded thimble removably fixed to said strainer, a rotatable knob or handle having an externally screw threaded lifter sleeve connected thereto and rotating therewith, and means for rotatably connecting said knob or handle with said lifter rod, said lifter rod extending through said lifter sleeve and knob, substantially as specified.
2. In a lavatory, bath or other basin, the
-; combination with the waste outlet or sleeve,
secured to the lifter rod and having a rotatable connection with and extending through said lifter sleeve and said rotary knob or handle so that the latter may turn without turning the lifter rod, said connecting stem being adapted to be turned in respect to the lifter rod for adjustment substantially as specified.
