Be it known that I, PHiNnAs L. BARTHOL oMnw, a citizen of the United States, residing in Aurora, county of Kane, and'State of Illinois, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Paper-Bag-lvlanufacturing Machines, of which the following is a speciiication.l
rllhe object of my invention is to improve, generally, in a paper bag manufacturing machine adapted to out and fold the base of the bag into the diamondl fold, the cut pro#A ducing shafts and cylinders; the feed, the spreaders andironers, and particularly the gripping and folding cylinders.
My main object is to provide means for completely severing the bag tube in bag lengths before delivering the said bag portions to the folding and gripping cylinders.
My invention consists of certain details of construction, hereinafter set fort'h, pointed out in my claims and illustrated in the accompanying drawings in which,-

Referring to the accompanying drawings, 10 and 11 indicate the longitudinal side frame-members of the machine, said side frame-members being connected and rigidly secured` to each other by means of cross bars. The said longitudinal frame- members 10 and 11 are alike and on the same are mounted all of the operative parts of the machine.
Mounted on a support near the rear end of the machine and extending longitudinally forward therefrom through the central portion of the machine is a horizontal tongue plate 12, said tongue plate extending forward into operative relation to the gripping and folding means, for purposes hereinafter set forth. IVhen reference is herein made to the rear and forward ends of the machine the receiving and delivery ends respectively are intended to be designated and when reference is had to certain portions of Vthe machine being located on the upper part and certain portions being located on the lower part, the tongue plate 12 is used as the dividing line. Beneath the rear V portion of the said tongue plate 12 is secured a lower plate 14, the two plates 12 and 14 being 'joined by a narrower longitudinal plate 13 in the usual manner. Said plates 12 and 14 are separated somewhat at their rear extremities and converge toward one another at their forward ends. The lower plate 14 extends to a point about midway between the rear and the forward ends of the tongue plate 12, and the longitudinal grooves formed between thev side margins of the upper and lower plates are designed to receive the bellows folds of the paper tube as the same is formed and fed into the machine; the rear ends of said plates 12 and 14 forming parts of appliances for forming a bellows-folded tube from a continuous roll of paper.

17 and 18 indicate guide plates which also form parts of the tubeforming device. Said guide plates extend transversely from the rails 10 and 11 to points beneath the plate 14. The guide plate 18 is at the rear the same upwardly into contact with said plate. The rollers 19, 19 are yieldingly supported by means of horizontal, longitudinally arranged arms 190, 190 (Fig. 4) which are pivoted on standards-191, 191 on the machine frame, and on the forward ends of which the said rollers are mounted. The said forward ends of the arms 190, 190 are thrown upwardly and the rollers 19, 19 are pressed toward the plate 14 by means of springs 192, 192, shown as having the form of expansively acting coiled springs, which surround upright rods 193, 193 that are pivoted at their upper ends to the rear ends of the arms 190, 190 and pass through guide apertures in liXed brackets 194, 194 on the machine frame; the said springs bearing at their upper ends on saidV brackets and at their lower ends on nuts applied to the The rollers 19, 19 are inclined with respect to the central., longitudinal line of the machine in such manner that their forward edges are nearer together than their' rear edges; the inclined position of said rollers, in the construct-ion illustrated, being secured by the arrangement of the supporting arms 190, 190 thereof in rearwardly divergent relation, as seen in Fig. 6. The arrangement of the said rollers in inclined position, as described, has the effect that the rollers, as the bellowsfolded tube is drawn forward over the plates 12 and 14, act on the overlapping edges of the web, with which they are in contact, in a manner to draw said edges together or toward each other, and to thereby counteract any tendency in said edges to become drawn apart or separated from each other as the tube is advanced. As the bellows shaped paper tube advances over the plates 12 and 14, the bellows folds are moved through the grooves between the margins of the said plates; the lower part of the tube consisting of the marginal parts of the web which are designed to overlap and be joined to each other by means of an adhesive substance, being folded beneath the lower plate 14. One of the lateral margins of the web is threaded between the rearmost guide 18 and the lower plate 14 and the other lateral edge thereof is threaded between the forward guide 17 and the said lower plate. As the said paper tube thus applied to the plates 12 and 14 has already been provided on one lateral margin with paste or other adhesive substance it is obvious that the two lateral margins of the web, when brought int-o overlapping relation and drawn between the guide plate 17 and the bottom surface of the plate 14 will be pressed together to complete thepasting of the tube. The presser wheels 19, 19 hereinbefore described operate to carry inwardly the overlapping margins of the tube, thus keeping the freshly pasted parts together.
20 and 21 indicate bearing standards mounted on the rails 10 and 11, respectively, and adapted to receive and support journal boxes 22, 22 in which are mounted a transverse, horizontal shaft 23, located below the plane of the tongue plate 12, and provided with fixed collars 24, 24 on which are mounted longitudinally arranged cutting knives 25, 25, each of which is designed to produce at the proper place a longitudinal cut in the lower part of the paper tube. In the shaft 23 centrally between the collars 24, 24 is formed a transverse guide passage 26 adapted to receive a transversely arranged knife-bar 27 which is arranged to slide endwise in said guide passage. Un one end of said knife-bar 27 is mounted a transverse cutting knife 28. Said bar, when in its normal position, holds the cutting knife inwardly from its operative or cutting position and the said knife-bar is retained in such normal position by means of a coiled spring 29 applied to the end of the knife-bar which projects from the side of the shaft 23 opposite the knife. The knife-bar 27 is actuated by means of an arm 30 mounted rigidly on a transverse, horizontal rockshaft 31, which said rock-shaft is actuated by a cam 32 on the shaft Said rockshaft 31 is provided with an upwardly eX- tending rigid arm 195, shown in Figs. The pivot of the lever 110 is at a point inside the end wall of the cylinder 102 and on said end wall of said cylinder is a coiled saring 119 which acts on the lever 11G at a point between the pivot of the said lever and the antifriction roller on its outer end. The said spring 119 holds the lever 118 normally in position with its outer end at the outward liint of its swinging movement, and maintains the inner end of the lever 110 at the inward limit of its movement. l'n this position of the lever 110 the gripper arm 112 will be in position with its gripper linger 115 away from the end of the adjacent bracket arm. nward pressure upon the antifriction roller 118 will cause the levers 109 and 110 to be drawn outward with the effect of shifting the gripper arm 112 toward the bar 105, the links 113 and 11sL acting to draw the swinging end or" said gripper arm toward the bracket arm, while the gripper i'inger on the end ot said gripper arm is brought into gripping engagement with the end of the bracket arm. The cylinder 102 is provided with a second longitudinal slot in which is located a bar 12d, on which are mounted the parts of a second gripping device. Said bar has attached to its inner surface, at its center, a bracket 125 which extendsV diainetrically across the cylinder and has its extremity extended through an aperture formed in the wall of the cylinder midway between the ends of the same; the end of the bracket being flush with the surface of the cylinder. The bracket 125 is made of U- shape, having parallel arms which are attached to the bar 124.
127 indicates a longitudinally arranged lever located in the inner surface of the bar 124. Said lever 127 is pivoted to the bar by a pivot pin 128, and its outer end extends outwardly beyond one end of said bar, while its inner end extends to the center of said bar. Said inner end of the lever 127 is pivoted to a slide-bar 129 rwhich has endwise sliding movement between the parallel arms of the bracket 125 (Fig. 15). Attached to the opposite side faces of the bar 129 are two parallel bars 134 and 135 Fig. 13), the ends of which extend past or overlap the parallel arms of the bracket 125. Between the outer ends of said bars 134 and 135 are pivoted the inner ends of two gripper arms 130 and 131 which extend transversely of the cylinder and have their outer ends extended through the slot in the cylinder at opposite edges of the bracket 125. The outer ends of said gripper arms are provided with inwardly extending gripper fingers 132 and 133 adapted to coact with the end surface of the said bracket, over which said fingers extend.
136 and 137 indicate pairs of links, which are pivoted to the bracket 125 and severally to the gripper arms 130 and 131. Said links are arranged obliquely in such manner that when the gripper arms are moved bodily inward or toward the bar 124 the outer ends of the gripper arms which stand normally a short distance away from the side edges of the bracket, will be drawn toward the latter. The gripper fingers are carried into gripping contact with the end face of the bracket by an inward shifting movement of the bar 129 and the bars 134 and 135, to which said gripper arms are pivoted. The lever 127 projects outwardly to a point beyond the end of the said bar 124 and is provided on its outer end with an antifriction roller 138. In the end wall of the cylinder 102 is a coiled spring 139 which presses outwardly on the lever 127 at a point between its pivot 128 and the antifriction roller 138, The spring thus arranged holds the outer end of the lever 127 normally at the outward limit of its swinging movement and retains the inner end of said lever 127 and the bar 129 in position to maintain the gripper fingers 132 and 133 raised or away from the adjacent end of the bracket 125. Inward pressure on the antifriction roller 138 will cause the inner extremity of the lever 127 to move outwardly, thus causing the gripper fingers 132 and 133 to approach each other and to come into gripping engagement with the end face of the bracket 125.
140 (Fig. 12) indicates a segmental cam mounted concentrically with the cylinder 102 in position to act on the left hand antifriction roller 118 in the turning of the cylinder 102 for operating the left hand gripper arm 112. Said cam 140 is supported from the journal box 100 by means oit' a flanged plate 120 which is directly attached to said journal box, and horizontal rods or studs 121, 121 which rigidly connect the said cam with the said flanged plate. 141 indicates a like cam which is supported on the journal box 9S), and is adapted to engage the antifriction roller 118` for operating the right hand grip-v per arm 112. Said cam 141 is supported from the box 99 by means of a flanged Vplate 122 attached to the oui-nal box and horizontal rods or studs 123. 1-l-2 indicates a second segmental cam which is-secured vto the journal box 99 and is adapted to act onthe antifriction roller 138 for operating the gripping arms 130 and 131. Said cam 142 shown as having the form of a cylindric segment which is attached to the inner end of the journal box 99 and extends therefrom inwardly toward the end of the cylinder 102. The lever 127 extends beyond the end of the cylinder 102 a suflicient distance to bring the antifriction roller 138 exterior to the path of rotation of the au ti friction roller 118, so that. the cam 141 will be free from the roller 138, while the cam 142 will engage the autifriction roller 138 without coming in Contact with the aniiifriction roller 118.

Secured to the under surface of said tongue plate are three fiat, spring fingers 14.9, 150 and 151, all of whichihave their free extremities directed forwardly and bent or defiected obliquely downward. As hereinbefore described, the paper tube is completely severed when it passes between the cylinders 58 and 73, and as the forward end of the severed tube passes from the forward end of the tongue plate to the folding and gripping cylinders, the upper and lower folds, caused by the bellows shape of the tube, are at said forward end of the severed tube separated somewhat vertically by the action of the springs 1119, 150 and 151, which press downwardly on the lower fold. It fill be remembered that the cylinders S1 and 102 are separated, or at some little distance apart, when the shaft S3 is in its normal position and, consequently, space is afforded between the cylinders, at such time, to permit the opening of the folds of the bellows shaped tube as ust described. The gripper fingers 115, 115 on the cylinder 102 grasp the lateral edges of the upper bellows folds of the paper tube, at the required time, and at the same time the corresponding gripper fingers on the cylinder 83 operate to grasp the lateral edges of the lower bellows fold of the tub. Prior to this time, and as the bag is entering between the gripping cylinders, the centrally located spring 149, on the end of the tongue, forces the il shaped tongue, on the lower fold of the tube, downwardly into position to be gripped by the gripper fingers and on the cylinder Si while the U-shaped tongue on the upper fold of the tube will have been already gripped by the fingers 115 and 121 on the upper cylinder 102. As the severed bag thus gripped continues to advance between the cylinders Se and 102, the shaft 83 is moved upward until the cylinders Se and 102 come in contact one with the other, and as the forward surface of the two cylinders are moving away from each other the gripper fingers on the upper cylinder moving upward and those onthe lower cylinder moving downward, the upper and lower layers of the tubular bag are drawn away from one another, thus starting the diamond fold.
The creasers 20S and 209 on the rollers 4-0 and 41T, and the like creasers 216 and 217 on the rollers 58 and .73 operate to cross crease the tube, so as to break the stiffness of the paper without injury thereto, and form a defining line to facilitate the laying of the upper fold of the bag back to follow the bottom fold as the bag leaves the gripping cylinders after the formation of the diamond fold.
The gripper fingers 132 and 133 on the Alower cylinder Set retain their engagement with the tongue on the lower fold of the bag until said tongue has been carried downwardly far enough to be caught between the cylinder Se and the feed cylinder 95, by which the bag is carried downwardly to and between the pasting and folding cylinders hereinafter described. is soon as the bag has become engaged by said feed cylinders the several gripping fingers 115, 115, 132 and 133 are released to free the bag from the gripping cylinders.

Devices for pressing the end portions of the bellows folds flat against the top and bottom folds, and to thereby complete the diamond fold are shown as follows: 163 indicates a cross-bar secured to the rails 10 and 11 at a point in advance of the cylinders 34- and 102, said cross bar affording a support for two standards and 165 (Fig. 7 in which are mounted transverse, horizontal rocloshafts 166 and 167, arranged in vertical alinement with each other. The upper shaft 166 extends tlnough one of the standards and is connected by means of a rigid crank aria 163 thereon, with the upper end of a pitman 169 through which the said rock-shafts are actuated. YExtending from the central portions of the shafts 166 and 67 are rigidly attached arms 170 and 171 which extend from the rock-shafts rearwardly or toward the gripping rollers. The ends of said arms 170 and 171 carry horizontal, transverse rods 172 and 173 on the ends of which are carried upright ironers 17d and 175. Each of said ironers is pivotally connected with the rods 172 and 173, which are at the same distance apart vertically as the shafts 166 and 167, so that, as the shafts 166 and 167 are given rocking movement, the ironers are moved toward and from the gripping cylinders 86 and 102 but are always maintained in their vertical position.
rlhe pasting and folding rollers of the machine consist of large upper and lower rollers 30 and 231 mounted on horizontal shafts and 233 which are mounted on the rear end of the machine frame below the feed cylinder Se. fr presser roller 23d acts against the rear face of the upper roller 230 in position to grip the advance ends of the bags as the latter pass downwardly between the cylinders 811iand 911. Said presser roller is mounted at its ends in pivoted spring actuated levers 235 mounted on the ails 10 and 11. The details of construction in and operation of said pasting and folding rollers need not be herein described as they constitute no part of the present invention.
rlhe upright pitinan 169 through the medium of which motion is given to the rock- shafts 172 and 173 and the ironers is actuated by means as follows: ris clearly seen in Fig. 3, said pitman 169 is pivotally connected at its lower end with the rear end of a horizontal lever 236, the forward end of which is pivoted to the side of the machine frame. Said lever 236 extends below one end of the shaft 233 of the lower roller 231, and on said shaft is secured a cani 237 which is a lapted to act on a roller 238 mounted on the lever 236 between the ends of the same.
rllhe driving means for actuating` or giving rotary motion to the several rotative shafts of the machine, hereinbefore described, is constructed as follows: 2d() indin cates a horizontal, vtransversely arranged main driving shaft to which continuous rotary motion is given and which is mounted in suitable bearings below the two side rails 10 and 11 of the machine frame. Secured to one end of the said shaft 240 is a gear wheel 2411 which intermeshes with an idler 2312 mounted on the rail 10. rlChe idler 242 meshes with a gear wheel 2113 on the adjacent end of the shaft 39, as clearly seen in 1. On the opposite end of said shaft 39 outside of the machine frame (F ig. 2) is secured a gear wheel 2114. 2in1 meshes with a gear wheel 245, of the saine diameter, on the shaft 416, so that said shafts 39 and L16 are driven at the same speed. rlhe gear wheel 241132 meshes with two idlers 2&6 and 247, mounted on the rail 11, one at the rear and the other forward of the said gear wheel 244. The idler 24:6 intermeshes with a gear wheel 248 on the shaft 23, and on said shaft 23 is a second gear wheel 2l-9 which meshes with a gear wheel 259 of the same diameter on the shaft Said gear wheel 34. The idler 247 meshes with a gear wheel 250 on the shaft 57, and said gear wheel 250 meshes with a gear wheel 251 of the same diameter on the shaft The gear wheel 250 on the shaft 57 meshes with an idler mounted on the outerI face of the rail 11 and said idler 252 meshes with another idler 253, which is mounted on thc standard 80 and meshes` with the gear wheel 103 on the shaft 101. The shaft 83 is driven from the shaft 101 by the upright shaft 14T and the beveled gearing associated therewith, as hereinbefore described. The idler 252 also meshes with another idler 254 mounted on the machine `frame below and to the rear thereof. Said idler 254 meshes with another i ller 255 which in turn meshes with the gear wheel 256 on the shaft 233. Said gear wheel meshes with a gear wheel 257 of the same diameter affixed to the adjacent end of the shaft 232.
The operation of the machine in the preliminary cutting of the bellows-folded tube and inthe formation of the diamond fold on the pieces or sections severed from the bellows-folded tube to form separate bags, is as follows: rThe web of paper is fed to the machine in the usual manner andl is formed into a bellows-folded tube by the action of the- tongue plates 12 and 14, the folders 15 and 1G and the guide plates 17 and 18. As the tube is fed forward its upper fold or layer is provided with a. U-shaped cut, by the action of the knife 201, and two longitudinal cuts, by the action of the knives 108, 198, while its lower fold or layer is provided with a transverse cut by the action of the knife 28 and with two longitudinal cuts by the action of the knives 25, rllhereafter, the marginal parts of both bellows folds are partially severed by two transverse cuts made by the knives 51 and 52, as hereinbefore described. After he forward end of the tube is reached and became engaged by the cylinders 84 and 102, a section or length to form a bag is completely severed from the tube by the cutters 215 and 216 on the cylinder 73. The leading' end of the tube, as the same approaches the cylinders 84 and 102, is opened or spread apart by the action of the springs 149, 150 and 151 on the advance end of the tongue plate 12. is the forward end of the tube advances beyond the cylinders 58 and 73, Vthe same rests upon and is guided the rods 64 and which extend from the grooves in the cylinder 58 horizontally forward to points ade `iacent to the cylinder 84. The top fold of the bag section, as the tube is fed forward, passes at its side margin beneath the jaws er grippers 132, 133 of the upper cylinder, which grippers catch the side edges of the tongue on the advance cud of the upper layer of the bag section, the cam 142 being arranged'to act on the roller 138 at the proper time to operate the grippers at the time the tongue on the top layer enters beneath the same. The tongue on the lower layer of the bag section at the saine time enters beneath and is gripped at its side margins by the gripper- s 132, 133 of the lower cylinder, and the side edges of the lower bellows folds enter beneath and are gripped by the grippers 115, 115 on said lower cylinder. By the further turning of the cylinders 84 and 102, after the tongues on the Lipper and lower layers have been so gripped by the gripping fingers 115, 115, 132, 133, the advance ends of the upper and lower layers are spread apart or carried upwardly and downwardly. Shortly after the ends of the upper and lower folds of the bag section have beer carried past the central vertical line of the opposing cylinders, the side margins of the upper and lower bellows folds enter beneath the jaws 115, 115 of the side clamps on both of the cylinders, which jaws are closed, by the action of the cams 140, 141 on the rollers 118, 118, to catch and hold the said side margins of the upper and lower bellows folds at the ends of the creased line for the cross fold, made by the creasers, as hereinbefore described. lThe continuous rotation of the -upper and lower cylinders 84 and 102 carries the bag section forward with the gripper-s and side clamps holding the same until the grippers 115, 115 of both cylinders have reached a vertical plane pass ing through the forward periphery of the cylinders, .at which time the edges of the bellows folds will have been drawn in into a vertical position to form the diamond fold. After the dia-mond fold is so formed, the grippers 132, 133 and 115, 115 on both cylinders will be released by the passing of the rollers 118, 118 and 138 from contact with the cams 140, 141 and 142. The spreaders 152 and are opened out just before the grippers are released, and the free ends of these spreaders strike against the inbend of the bellows fold and thereby break or open out the fold so as to form the straight, oblique folding lines for the bottom of the bag. The grippers of the lower cylinders retain their hold upon the tongue of the lower layer of the bag section until such tongue has been carried into engagement with and gripped by the feed roller 94. which acts with the cylinder 84 to draw or carry the folded end of the bag downwardly and deliver it between the cylinder 230 and the feed roller 234. In its passage down wardly from the cylinder 86 to the said cylinder 230 and feed roller 234, the advance en d of the bag section is 'guided by the rods 87 and 88, which are carried downwardly in front on the cylinder 80, as seen in Fig. 4. .at the time of the release of the grippers the ironers 175 and 176 are thrown forward toward the cylinders 86 and 102 pressing the inwardly turned side :[iaps inwardly against the faces of the top and bottom folds or layers of the bag section. Said ironers are not intended to press with any force against the bottom of the bag, but act merely to prevent the side flaps from bulging outward as the bottom of the bag is carried down. After the folded bottom passes the feed roller 94- it is carried to the folding and pasting rollers by which the end flaps of the bottom are turned inwardly and the pasting of said end flaps together is accomA plished.
The lower cylinder 86 is given rising and falling movement in order that the upper and lower cylinders may be separated to give space for the grippers, when the same are passing between the cylinders. rlhe cylinders are separated from each other at the time the advance end of the bag section is advanced into position to be engaged by the grippers, and the latter are actuated to grasp the same. After the grippers have been operated to grip the bag section, and before the grippers are actuated to release the saine, the lower cylinder rises so that the bag section is gripped between the cylinders and fed forward by the same. The grippers 115, 115 which engage the margins of the upper and lower folds of the bellows folds, are automatically actuated to grasp the same, at the proper time, at the ends of the transverse folding line which has been determined by the creasers. lThe infolded part of the bellows folds are forced outwardly by the spreaders just before the grippers release their hold, so that the sides of the bottom of the bag will be drawn straight by the action of the grippers and side clamps, thereby insuring the accurate formation of the upright side folds at the bottom of the bag, as clearly indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 8. As the bottom of the bag is carried downwardly between the cylinder 8@ and feed roller 95, the upper flap of the bottom, previously held by the grippers against the cylinder 102, will be folded back on the body of the bag section, as heretofore done in the operation of making paper bags.
I claim as my invention Y 1. In a paper bag machine, the combination with a tongue plate adapted to support a bellows folded tube, of two sets of rotative knives located one above and one bel'ow said tongue plate, each set consisting of a transverse knife and two longitudinally arranged knives adapted to make a central transverse cut and two longitudinal cuts in the top and bottom folds of the tube, a pair of feed rolln ers located one above and the other below said tongue plate, provided with two laterally separated transverse knives adapted to make transverse cuts extending through the side margins of the tube, and a second pair of feed rollers located one above and the other below said tongue plate, and provided with laterally separated traifisverse knives located in position to make transverse cuts connecting said marginal cuts with the central transverse cuts.
2. In a paper bag machine, the combina tion with a tongue plate adapted to support a bellows folded tube, of two sets of rotative knives, each set consisting of a transverse knife and two longitudinally arranged knives, a pair of feed rollers provided with two laterally separated transverse knives and with two laterally separated transverse ereasers, adapted to cut and crease the inarginal parts of the tube, and a second pair of feed rollers provided with two laterally separated transverse knives and with two laterally separated, transverse creasers, adapted to cut and crease the tube inside of the side margins thereof.
3, ln a paper bag machine, the combination with upper and lower tongue plates adapted to receive a bellows folded tube, of rotative shafts Alocated above and below said tongue plates, knife bars mounted transversely on said shafts and having endwise sliding movement thereon, each knife bar carrying a transverse knife, two longitudinal knives mounted on each shaft, one at each side of the transverse knife thereon, and means giving endwise movement to said knife bars to advance the knives thereon toward the tongue plates, said tongue plates being provided with knife receiving apertures.
4l. ln a paper bag machine, the combination of a tongue plate adapted to support a bellows folded tube, two sets of knives operating to make central transverse cuts and two longitudinal cuts in the top and bottom layers of said tube, a pair of feed cylinders each provided with a central shallow groove and one of which has two transverse knives adapted to make transverse cuts through the side margins of the bellows folded tube, and a second pair of feed cylinders provided each with a central shallow groove and two lateral grooves and one of which has two transverse knives adapted to sever the bellows folded tube transversely between its center and side margins, said tongue plate extending between both of said pairs of feed cylinders, and said tongue plate being provided adjacent to the lirst named pair of feed cylinders with opposite lateral notches forming a central longitudinal part which passes through the grooves of said first named pair of feed cylinders, and being also provided, adjacent to the second named pair of feed cylinders, with two oppositely arranged apertures forming central and lateral longitudinal parts which extend through the central and lateral grooves of said second named pair of feed cylinders.
