Description

T. I. GROVE.
JAR COVER.
APPLIOATION HLBD JUNE 1a. ,1908.
918,315. Patented Apr. 13, 1909,
Yfor an open locking ring l0.
THEODORE I. GROVE, OF HARTLAND, MINNESOTA.
Specification of Letters Patent;
Patented April 13, 1909.
Application filed June 13, 1908` Serial No. 438,343.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Tun-opone l, Gnovn,
citizen of the United States, residing at Hartland, in the county oll Freeborn and State ol' Minnesota, have invented a new and uselul Jar-Cover, of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to an improvement in jar closures, and is particularly adapted for use on butterjars, although the closure may be applied to various other receptacles.
The object of the present invention is to provide a device ol' the character described, which is simple in construction, easy et operation and cheap to manufacture.
A further object oi the invention is to provide a jar cover or lid having a handle, and means for locking the cover to the ar, which will permit of the jar being carried by means of said handle.
A still further object of the invention is to rovide a jar cover having means for readily ocking or unlocking the cover to or from the jar.
ln the drawings z-F igure 1 is a l'ace view oi a jar showing the cover with the locking means applied thereto. Fig. 2 is a 'l'ace view ol' a jar showing the cover detached therefrom. Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the clamping rim. Fig. 4 1s a detail cross sectional view of a portion oi' the cover.
Similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts in all the figures o'lI the drawings.
Referring to the drawings, l designates a jar ol any style having a bead la and having a cover 2 on which are secured spaced upstanding ears 3 and 3a respectively, to which the bail et ol' a handle 5 is attached. The cover 2 is provided with a depending ilange 6, which is adapted to embrace a ring 7 formed ol' wire or any other suitable material. At various intervals, a portion of the 'llange is cut away as shown by the reference numeral 8 to permit oi' the 'fastening oll the link members 9. These members are preferably 'formed of llat pieces oi metal having their upper ends 9a bent around to embrace the ring 7. The lower ends 9b of said members are also bent around to Aform bearings The two 'free ends l08J and 10b respectively of this ring are bent to form hooks or bearings forthe cam locking member l1. This cam locking mem ber 11 is preferably formed of a single piece of wire and is bent to form two loops, one
i larger than the other and having converging sides 11a and 1lb, one of said sides being arranged more at an angle than the other.
lt will be evident 'from the foregoing de scription that to lock the cover to the jar, it is only .necessary to position the cover on the jar, depend the clampingV ring 1 0 below the bead la ol the jar l, turn the cam locking member l1 so that the ends 10a and 10b ot' the ring 10 are arranged within the small loop ol' said member, and then l'orce they larger loop ol' the locking member up to the ring l0. rhus the cover 2 is securely locked to the jar. Thus it will be seen that the j ar may be carried from place to place by means of the handle 5.
From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction, operation and many advantages oll the herein described invention will be apparent to those skilled in the art, without further description, and it will be under stood that various changes in the size, shape, proportion, and minor details of construction, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any ol the advantages ot the invention.
`Having thus iully described my invention, what l claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, iszl. r'he combination with a receptacle having a bead at the upper ortion thereof, oi a cover provided with a liandle, a ringshaped clamping member arranged to engage the bead oi the receptacle, links pivot-ed to the cover at one end and to the clamping member at the other end, and means tor contracting the said member in applying the cover to a receptacle.
2. In combination with the cover, spaced links depending from and pivoted to the peripheral edge thereot', a ring-shaped clamping member carried by the lower ends ot' the links, and means lor contracting the said member in applying the cover to a receptacle.
3. The combination with a receptacle, of a cover provided with a depending tlange having spaced cut-out portions, ring adapted to be retained by the flange, links pivotally mounted on the ring within the cut-out portions ol the flange, a clamping ring carried by said links and provided with hooked ends, and cam locking member arranged to engage the hooked ends Alor looking the cover to the receptacle.
4. The combination with a receptacle having a bead arranged near the upper portion thereof, of a cover provided with a depending flange having spaced cut-out ortions, a rin carried by said flange, space( links oarrie by said ring and arranged Within the cut-out portions of the flange, an open-ended ring carried by the links and provided withy a large loop having their connecting sides converging, said small loo 3 engaging Within the hooked ends of the c aniping ring and adapted to clamp said ring to the receptacle.
6. In combination with the cover having a ring-shaped clamping member, and a cani locking member connecting the two ends oi' the said clamping member, said earn locking member being 'formed with a large and a small loop and an intermediate contracted portion.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto affixed my signature in the presence of two Witnesses.
