FIRE -HOSE Specification of Letters Patent.
CARRIER.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HARVEY L. JENKINS, a citizen or" the United States, and resident of Bridgeport, in the county of Fairfield and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fire-Hose Carriers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in fire hose carriers such as are used by firemen, both for handling and carrying a water hose and likewise for supporting the same as from a ladder, window or other part of a building where it might be found necessary to attach the same.
It is the objects of my invention to produce a simple and convenient device for the above purpose whereby a hose may readily be engaged, raised, shifted or carried by a fireman as occasion may require, and especially to provide a carrier whereby a hose may be detachably connected to a round of a ladder as for instance when putting water in the upper story windows of a building; and finally to design the carrier so that it may be produced inexpensively from cast metal parts in a way to require comparatively little machine work.
Upon the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification similar characters of reference denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several figures, and of which,
Figure 1, shows a side edge view of the carrier complete. Fig. 2, is a side view of the carrier as seen in Fig. 1, and Fig. 3, a similar side view with the jaws and connecting operating parts in an open position.
Referring in detail to the characters of reference marked upon the drawings 5 represents the upper or handle member of my carrier, which as will be noted includes a loop portion which forms the handle proper and which is provided with a central depending shank- 6 slotted and drilled for the attachment of a wedge shaped tongue 7 through the medium of a screw bolt 8. Said handle is further provided on the underside portion with depending hooks 9 whereby the device may be made to engage a round of a ladder or other suitable support.
The side edges 10 of the tongue as will be noted are inclined, while the bottom end 11 is rounded. A central longitudinal slot 12 is also provided in the tongue to accommoi'late a pivotal screw 13. A pair of jaws 14 and 15 01' special design are pivotally connected together by means 01'' the screw 13 which passes through the ears 16 of the two aws and the slot of the tongue to fornx. a pivotal connection for the jaw. The upper orhead portions 17 of the jaws are recessed as at 18 to receive the said tongue and the outer walls 01' said recess are inclined to be engaged by the side edges 10 of the tongue in a way to be operated thereby. The horizontal bottom portions 19 of these pockets adjacent to the parting line are finished to line with each other and are adapted to be engaged by the lower central end portion 11 of the tongue vhen the same is shoved down sutliciently to strike the said bottom. The result of which is to throw the jaws open when not otherwise engaged. The tongue is thus normally inclosed within the pivotal head portion of the jaws except as it may protrude from the top when the tongue is drawn up for the purpose of closing the jaws as shown in Fig. This closing operation is obviously caused by drawing up on the handle and tongue in .a way to engage the upper wall of the recess of the head above the pivotal point thereof in a way to spread the same and close the lower end of the aws as seen in Fig. 2.
VJhen the carrier is suspended and in engagement with a hose the weight of the same is centered upon this point by the contact of the inclined faces of the head and tongue with the result that the heavier the draft the greater the tendency of the wedge shape tongue to enter and spread the heads and close the jaws more effectively.
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patout is 1. In a hose carrier of the class described, the combination of a pair of jaws pivotally connected together, a wedge shaped sliding tongue for engaging the jaws above the pivotal point to close the same, and having a central slot therethrough, a pivotal screw passing through both jaws and the tongue to operatively connect the same, a handle con nected to the tongue to support the same, and hooks formed upon the handle to engage a round of a ladder and support the carrier.
2. In a hose carrier of the class described, the combination of a pair of jaws pivotally connected together, a wedge shaped sliding tongue for engaging the aws above the pivotal point to close the same, and having a central slot therethrough, a pivotaliscrew passing through both jaws and the tongue to below the pivotal line, and mi ans for engagoperatively connect the same; anda handle ing the tongue to manipulate it to open and connected to the tongue to sup ort the same. close the jaws.
