Specicationnoi' Lettere Patent.
Patented April e, ieee.
Application filed June 3, 190B.I Serial No. $6,443.
To all whomtt may concern;
ne it known that I, FRANK AUBREY, a.
citizen of the United States, residing at Sum- 'mithilh in the' county of Carbon and State 5 'off Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful lmprovementsin Safety-Envelops, of which the following isa speeic'ation. This invention relates toa safety' envelop of that type' rovided With amucilage 'tongue on lthe top I ap Whichvis vadapted to be inso as to be stuck. to thel inside of the' envelop. and prevent the latter'Y from ybeing opened without detection. Y Y. f 'llhe invention has for one of litjs\objects to .provide ,an envelop of this'charactrqwhich ',iscompar'atively simple and inexpensive to manufacture, convenientV in use, and effect'- ivein preventingsurreptitious openin Anotherobjectof the invention is t e provision ,of ,an'eilvelophaving safety means so l" arranged that When'the envelop is sealed,
it has the same appearance as an ordinary envelo-pso that when it is attempted to open1 the same, the tongue 'will be torn and thus furnishv evidence of the unauthorizedv opening even though thetop flap be a ain sealed.
With these objects in view 'an othersas will appear as the description proceeds, the invention comprises the various novel 4features of construction and arrangementof parts which will be more. fullydescribed ereinafter and set forth with particularity in the claims appended hereto.-v
In the accompanying drawing, which illustrates one object of the invention, Figure 1 is a plan view ofthe envelop blank. Fig. `2 is a similar view showing the completed envelop with the top flap open. Fig. Sis al view of the sealed envelop. Fig. 4 is a sec Similar reference characters are employed to designate corresponding p arts through- 'out'the several views.' f y Referring to the drawing, 1 designates the -body or front of the envelop which is of rec-2 tangular or anyother approved shape and has top and bottom flaps"2 and 3 and side flaps 4 and l 5, there being creases or folds 6 between the edges of the bodyT Yand the aps.Y
The bottom flap- 3 is'provided with a slot 7 adjacent the vertex thereof and extending l 4parallel with the folds of the bottom flapfand ody of the envelop, and theinner face of this flapis provided with mucilage 8 along the edge thereof. The side flaps landey fold.:
itt
be stuck along its entire inwardly over the body-in the usual manner and the flap has a gummed portion at- Q,so'
as to adhere to the other side flap.- These f two flaps have recesses '-10 which aline with each other to forni a'slot which registers with. the slot 7 of the'bottom ila when the1 envelop is sealed, as shown in ig. 2. The iap 2 has' a central tongue 11 whichl s inwardly on a crease 11 and the inner face of this Atongue is gummed at 12 so as .to
adhere to the inner Aface :of the top flap, tile I latter having its inner face gummed at 13` soas to adhere to the s ide and bottom flaps f when the -envelop is -inally sealed. The innerface ofthe tongue is also guinmed at 14 so that when the tongue is inserted through the slot 7 in thebotto'rn and side liaps, it can adhere-to the virniide of theenvelop. -The outside face of the tongue is gummed at..15, as shown in Fig. 2, 'so that the top ilap can edge to the outside of thev envelop.
as shown in Fig. 2, so as to permit the atter ln using the envelop, the top flap is o ened or other contents to be inserted. The top ilap is` then moistened atthe gumrned portions 13 and the inner gurnrned face 1d ofthe tongue is' also moistened. AfterV this, the
topflap is-folded down and the'tongue 14 in serted through the slot 7 and slots of the side flaps, and'when the tongueis fully inserted,
pressure is applied to the edges of the top flap so vas to cause the same to adhere to the envelop and at the same time, the tongue 11 will adhere to the inside of. the envelop. Since the tongue isdisposed entirely under the top llap, the sealed envelop has the same appearance asv those ordinarily in usev and the tongue -is inaccessible, do that the envelop cannot be opened without the tongue being torn.
Having thus described the invention, what 'l claim is 1. An envelop provided' with a slot in it back, a top flap, and a tongue formed integral with the top lflap and folded back against the inner surface of the saine and glued adjacent its base to the top flap, the'remaining portion of the ltongue being free for insertion inthe slot and provided with adhesive for adhering to the inside of the envelop when the envelopis sealed, said top -flap having its Y inner face andportion of the tongue pro# vided with adhesive for adhering to the outer,
surface of the bottom flap.
' 2. An envelop comprising 'a body, side.
ajp's and top and 'bottom "flaps eonneote' 'ij/herewith, Said b otmpni.-flap having a Slot and the end flaps having recesses --,eo '5peiatv to form a slot registering With the' .slot of "55 the bottomapyaeentral tongue on the top" iap folded. inwardly' and parjnialy gled to the' inner face of 4the top: flapan'd adapted-to be inserted only part Way into thefs'lfssofrthe .'bot-tom and side laps; thejmier' face of' the "`1G "tongue bein provided with-adhesive tossiokf Ito. heinsi e. ofthe envelopfthe top flap'v being 'provided on itsV in neij face valong the 'edges thereof with agliriesive and theouter .Surface oftht-portio'n ofi-the tongueoutside "the" slots' also being vprovided with adhesive to adhere tothe outer surface of.' the bottom in presence of twowitn'esses';
