To all 'whom it may concerns Be it known that LWVILLIAM HENRY CLAY BRENNER, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Poughkeepsie, in the County of Dutchess and State of New York, have in vented a. new and Improved Controlling Device for Elevator-Brakes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The purpose of this invention is to provide novel details of construction for a brake rope controller, whereby the rope will be pulled upon by the upward travel of the elevator platform, and automatically stop said platform at a desired point, that will render the platform level with a floor of the building in which the elevator is installed.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, as is hereinafter described and defined in the appended claims.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the views.

Briey stated, this invention relates to a class of elevators generally used for the transportation of material from one floor in a building to another, the means for stopping and starting the elevator platform being controlled by a brake rope, that is pendent in or near the well holes in the fioors through which the elevator moves.
In the drawings, that show the Construction and application of the improvement, A indicates one floor of a plurality in a building and A', the side timbers that define the opening or well hole frame A through which the elevator platform travels. The platform B, of any approved Construction, is reciprocal in the well hole mentioned, and is in this Construction thereof represented as pendent from a rope C, that is shown broken, but in completed condition engages apparatus not shown, which moves the rope npwardly and correspondingly actuates the platform. A portion of a brake rope 5, that is normally hung pendent in the well hole near one defining timber A' thereof, is shown, this rope in condition for service being endless and connected at its npper bight with the controlling means employed to stop and start the elevator platform; this being common to this class of elevators is omitted from the drawings.
It is the purpose of this invention, as before mentioned, to provide simple, novel means for automatically arresting the platform of the elevator when it is level with a floor in the building, which is in this case, elfected by an upward movement of the brake rope 5, that is adapted by a downward movement thereof, for releasing the brale and permitting the free travel of the elevator.
The improvement is extremely simple and practical, consisting of the following described parts and their combination.
Two similar bracket arms G, each provided with a foot tlange G that projects laterally therefrom, are secured by means of said tlanges upon a timber A', that is adjacent to the pendent brake rope 5. The elongated plate-like bracket arms 6, are spaced apart a proper distance in a vertical plane, and between each pair of oppostely positioned ends of said bracket arms, hubs a are formed, that in pairs support a pintle shaft I), whereon a preferably grooved pulley c is rotatably mounted, thus disposing the similar pulleys c rotatably at respective ends of the arms. Upon the adjacent upright walls of the b 'acket arms G, (3, a pair of similarly shaped slideways 7, 7, are formed or securcd, which are preferably sloped on their sides toward the adjacent edges (Z thereof, as is clearly shown in Fig. 4:, and these edges are spaced apart sulliciently to pcrmit the free passage of the brake rope between them. Upon one run of the brake rope 5, an enlargement S, preferably in the form of a ball, is Secured. The rope C is so relatively arranged that one run thereof will occupy a vertical plane, coiicident with that occu pied by the grooved peripheries of the pulleys c, and the channel between the slideways 7.
The normal position of the ball S is shown in Figs. l and 2, which disposes the run of the brake rope 5 adjacent to the side *slides upon the ways 7.

The arm 9 is substantially V-shaped, but is convexed on the lower side the'eof, and in the angular outer end a notch e is formed that receives the brake rope 5.
lt will be seen in Figs. l and 2, that the run of the brake rope 5 having the fixed ball 8 thereon, engages the upper pulley c upon its periphery at a point farthest from the vertical plane traversed by the abutment arm 9, and that the bral-:e rope 5, below said ball, has contact with the lower grooved pulley c at a point in vertical alinement with 'the forled end of the abutment arm.

the abutment arm 9 will slide upon the brake rope 5, pass over the lower grooved pulley c and inpinge upon the lower side of the ball 8. The contact of the arm 9 with the ball 8 will pull upward upon the rope and this will continue while the ball The relative arrangement of the parts is such that when the upper surface of the platform B becomes level with the like surface of the floor A, the ball 8 will pass into the space between 'the bracket arms 6, above the slideways 7,
which will adapt the ball to slide down on :the opposite sides of the slideways 7, when the draft rope is pulled upon to start the elevator platform, the ball then assuning its normal position in the lower opening between the bracket arms 6, as shown in Figs. l and 2.
lt will be seen that by the Construction and arrangement of the improved controlling device, the platform of an elevator of the character described, will be automatically arrested at each one of a tier of fioors in a building provided each is supplied with t he'controlling device, and will remain stationary until the brake rope is pulled down,
which will release the brake and also restore the controlling deviceto its normal position for service when the elevator is again started upward.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desre to secure by Letters Patent: V
1. A controlling device for an elevator, comprising in combination with the elevatorcar and the brake rope for controllng the same, spaced slideways between which 'the rope passes, an enlargement on the rope, and a projection on the elevator-car for engaging the enlargement, said enlargement being of greater diameter than the space between the slideways for the purpose set forth.
2. A controlling` device comprising in combination with the elevatorcar, two spaced vertical slideways fixed at the point where the elevator is to be controlled, a brake rope pendent and passing between said slideways, a ball fixed on the brake rope, that will slide on the slideways when the rope and ball are moved upward for stopping the platform, and an abutment arm projected from the elevator-car in the path of the ball for contact therewith when the elevator moves upward.
3. The combination with a well hole frane in a building, and an elevator platform reciprocal through said well hole frame, of a brake-controlling device for the platform, enbodying two spaced bracket arms Secured on a member of the well hole frame, a slideway on each bracket arm, a pendent brake rope passing between the slideways, pulleys on the ends of the bracket arms engaged by the rope, a ball fixed on the rope which slides on the slideways when moved upward, and an abutment arm on the platform having a notched projecting end that receives the brake rope and is adapted to impinge upon the hall when the platform moves up: ward.
