Description

G. G. WEYGA'NDT.
RAIL JOINT.

CHARLES G. WEYGANDT, OF HYNDMAN, PENNSYLVANIA.
RAIL-JOINT.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLns G. WEY- GANDT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hyndman, in the county of Bedford and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Rail-Joints,
, of which the following is a speciiication.
This invention relates to rail joints, the object of the invention being to provide a practical and thoroughly reliable truss joint adapted for the rail support and brace of the abutting ends of railroad rails where the joint occurs for example, between adjacent ties instead of directly over or upon a tie.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts as herein fully described, illustrated and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings t-Figure l is a side elevation of a rail joint embodying the present invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical cross section through the same taken on the line 2-2 of Fig. l. Fig. 3 is a similar section on the line 3 3 of Fig. l.
Referring 'to the drawings, l designates a series of ties and 2 and ldesignate the rail ends which moet or approach each other at the joint 4.
ln carrying out the present invention, l provide a pair of oppositely arranged splice bars 5 which also constitute supporting chairs for the rail ends, the said splice bars being provided with botto a flanges 6 which extend beneath the base of the rail as clearly shown in Fig. 2. Each of the splice bars is substantially triangular in vertical cross section as shown in Fig. 2 and at opposite sides of the joint 4 and located equidistantly therefrom each splice bar is provided with outwardly projecting lugs 7 each oiZ which is provided with an inclined groove or seat 8 for the reception oin the two members or sections 9 and 1.0 oi a truss rod.
rPhe adjacent end of the truss rod sections are provided with right and left hand screw threads as shown at l1. with which a turn buckle l2 engages for connecting said sections and placing the same under the necessary tension to form a rail support and truss for the rail joint. While the inner portions of the truss rod sections are disposed hori- Specication of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 2, 1908.
Patented March 2, 1909.
serial No. 430,593.
zontally, as shown in Fig. l, the outer end portions thereof are inclined upwardly as shown in the same 'figure and said sections terminate at their outer ends in enlargements 13 in the form of iiat plates which bear against the web portions of the rail ends as shown in Figs. l and 2. These end portions or plates are secured to the rail ends by inserting bolts 14 therethrough as best illustrated in Figs. 1 and 3, thus tying the rail ends together and placing the truss rods at opposite sides of the rail joint under the necessary tension to form the requisite support and brace for the joint as a whole. The splice bars are designed to be secured to the ties upon which they rest b y means of the ordinary spikes l5.
l claim 1. The combination with rail ends, of splice bars overlapping said ends and arranged at opposite sides of the rail, said splice bars being provided with grooved seats and truss rods secured to the rail ends and engaging said seats and provided with turn buckles, substantially as described.
2. The combination with abutting rail ends, of splice bars arranged at opposite sides thereof and extending across the joints between the railends, said splice bars being provided with grooved seats, and truss rods arranged at opposite sides of the rail and having their outer ends fastened to the rails, each truss rod comprising sections engaging said seats and having right and left hand screw threads, and a turn buckle connecting the threaded ends of the sections.
3. The combination of abutting rail ends, of splice bars located at opposite sides thereof and provided with inclined seats, and truss rods located at opposite sides of the joint and having their opposite ends secured to the rails, each truss rod embodying sections having inclined portions which engage said seats, and right and left hand threaded portions, and a turn buckle connecting said threaded portions.
ln testimony whereof l affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
