BALING-MACHINE Application filed August 26, 1908.
To all whom it may camera:
Be it known that we, CHARLES EDWARD MOLIN and JoI-IN SNEEGROW BAcI-IMAN, eitizens of the United States, and residents of Rome, in the county of Floyd and State of Georgia, have invented a new and Improved Ealing-Machine, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
Our invention relates to baling` machines and especially to machines for baling ties which have been used on bales of cotton.
The object of the invention is to provide a table on which are disposed guides spaced apart, some of the guides being connected through the table top by Operating mechanism, a core being disposed in the ties, which are then doubled on themselves, transverse pins being Secured to the upper terminale of some of the guides, between which the ties are disposed, and by means of levers and links the guides which. are disposed through the table top, are forced downwardly, pressing the ties between the pins and the table. Means are provided to hold the guides yieldingly upward, and means are also provided to hold the guides down independently of the levers and links.
Still other objects of the invention will appear in the following complete description.
In this specification we will describe the prcferred form of our invention, but it will be understood that we do not limit ourselves thereto, as we consider ourselves entitled to all forms and embodilnents of the invention which may be held to fall within the scope of the appended claiins.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specifieation, in which similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the figuros, in which- Figure 1 is a perspective view of the inachine Fig. 2 is an enlarged view of the table top showing the adjustable guides; Fig. 3 is a transverse section, showing one pair of adjustable guides upwardly disposed; Fig. 4 is a similar view, but with the pair of adjustable guides held downwardly by means of the link and lever; Fig. 5 is a view showing the means for holding the adjustable guides downwardly, independently of the link and lever; and Fig. 6 is a view showing the bale after it has passed through the machine.
By referring to the drawings, it will be seen that a table is provided with a top 1 and standards or legs 2, which serve as its sup- Specificaton of Letters Patent.

ports. On the top of the table are disposed two or more pairs of stationary guides 3, each pair of the stationary guides being spaced ap art, and in alinement with these stationary guides are pairs of adjustable guides 7, which pass through openings in the table top and are secured to links 4 which are pivoted to levers 5, seeured to the standards 2. Between the adjustable guides 7 and the stationary guides 3, are disposed uprights 8, having vertical slots therein, in which is adapted to be disposed a guide pin 9. The adjustable guides 7 have ori'lices 10 therein, and in these orifi ces 10 are adapted to be disposed pins 1.1. liever guides 12, are Secured to a longitudinal member 13, which is secured to the standards 2, the levers each. being disposed between pairs of the lever guides 1.2. Stops 14, are pivoted to the under side of the table top 1, the stops being adapted to be disposed between the adjustable guides 7, so that they will be dispesed against the top of the links 4, to hold the adjustable guides 7 down independently of the links 4 and the levers 5. The stops 14 may have shoulders thereon, so that they may engage with the links 4 to hold the adjustable guides 7 down at different elevations. To each of the stops .1.4 is secured a rod. 15, which has its terminais bent in the form of a crank, so that the stops 14 may be drawn into or out of engagement with the links 4 by means of the said terminals.
In the use of the invention, the buclles 20 which have been used in fastening the ties are disposed around one of the ties 16 to form a core, and this tie 15 is disposed on the top of the other ties which are disposed between the fixed and adjustable guides 3 and 7. The guide pin 9 is then introduced in the vertical slots in the uprights 8, and the ties are lifted from between the fixed guides 3 and are bent around the guidepin 9 and over and between the adjustable guides 7, so that the ties will be doubled on theinselves. The pins 11 are then introduced into the orifiees 10 in the adjustable guides 7, and the levers 5 are operated by treadles 17, which draw the adjustable guides downwardly, pressing the ties between the pins 11 and the top of the table. As soon as one of the levers 5 has been operated by the treadle 17, the stop 14 is drawn into engagement with the top of the link 4 to hold the adjustable guides Secured thereto in place when the treadle is freed. The operator then proceeds in the same manner with a second pair of adjustable guides, until all the adjustable guides are held downwardly by means of the stops 111. The bale is then ready to be tied, and wires 18 are slipped through the slots 1L in the table top 1 and under the ties, these wires being fastened to hold the ties secure. The core assists in holding the adres 18 in place. Springs 19 are provided to hold the adjustable guides 7 yieldingly upward.
Having thus described our invention, We claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent:
1. In a baling machine, a table, guides spaced apart and disposed through the top of the table, means for uniting the guides at their upper terminale, a link to which the guides are secured, a lever to which the link is pivoted, means for holding the guides yieldingly upward, and. means independent of the lever for holding the guides down.
2. In a baling machine, a table, aseries of pairs of guides spaced apart and secured to the table, a second series of pairs of guides in alinement with the first series and eXtending through the table top, a link connecting each pair of guides of the second series respectively, levers pivoted to the table frame, and pivoted to the links respectively, and means for eonnecting the upper terminais of each pair of the second series of guides.
3. In a baiing machine, a table, a series of pairs of guides spaced apart and Secured to the table, a second series of pairs of guides in alinemen't with the first series and eXtending through the table top, a link connecting each pair of guides of the second series respectively, levers pivoted to the table frame and pivoted to the links respectively, means for connecting vthe upper terminais of each pair of the second series of guides, means for holding the second series of guides yieldingly upward, and stops adapted to fit between the pairs of guides in the second series respectively to hold them down. i
4. Ina baling machine, a table, a series of pairs of guides spaced apart and Secured to the table, a second series of pairs of guides in alinement with the first series and extending through the table top, a link connecting each pair of guides of the second seriesrespectively, levers pivoted to the table frame and pivoted to the links respectively, means for connecting the upper terminals of each pair of the second series of guides, a pair of uprights disposed between the first and second series of guides and having vertical slots therein, and a pin adapted to be disposed in the said slots.
' 5. In a baling machine, a table, a series of pairs of guides, the members of each pair being spaced apart, the guides extending through the table top, means for connecting the members of each pair of guides near their upper terminais, links, each of which is disposed between the members of one pair of guides and is secured thereto, levers pivoted to the frame of the table, each lever being also pivoted to one of the links respectively, and stops adapted to fit between the members of each pair of guides respectively to contact with the links and to hold the guides down.
6. In a baling machine, a table, a series'of pairs of guides spaced apart, extending through the table top, means for connecting the members of each pair of guides near their upper terminals, links, each of which is disposed between the members of one pair of guides and is secured thereto, levers pivoted to the frame of the table, each lever being also pivoted to one of the links respeetively, means for holding the guides yieldingly upwardly, and stops adapted to fit between the members of each pair of guides res ectively to contact with the links to hold t e guide down, the stops having uneven faces so that they can hold the guide down in a plurality of positions.
