FURNACE Specification of Letters Patent.

Application filed. February 3, 1908. Serial No. 414,123.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OLIVER HILE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Princeton, in the county of Lancaster and State of Ncbraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Furnaces; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to furnaces and particularly to hot air furnaces.
The object of the invention is to form the deflector or crown plate and the case of the furnace so as to obtain a more thorough distribution of the heat and to transmit the burned products of combustion through the heat reservoir so their radiated heat products will assist in raising the temperature within the heat reservoir.
Further objects of the invention will appear as the specific description which follows is read in connection with the accompanying drawings, wherein,
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the furnace, Fig. 2 is a transverse sect-ion thereof, and Fig. 3 is a front elevation.
Referring more especially to the drawings, 1 and 2 represent the inner and outer casing of the furnace, both of which extend upwardly throughout their length and for a short distance adjacent the ash pit 3 are vertically positioned. At a point a trifle below the grate et, which is supported upon the inner casing 2, the parts 1 and 2 on both sides of the furnace diverge to the top of the furnace where they are connected by the top piece 5. Depending from the inner casing and the top piece is a guide or deflector casing G, to which is secured the crown sheet T. This crown sheet extends longitudinally of the furnace and is connected at its ends by deflector plates S and 9. The crown sheet is raised along its center in a longitudinal direction so as to present a concave surface to the smoke and flames arising from the fire pit 10, and forms with the top and deflector casing G, a heat reservoir 11, which is connected to the cold air space 12, between the casings 1 and 2 by conduits 13 passing directly through the space between the dedector sheets and the inside casing, but having no communication with the interior of the furnace.
Communicating with the space between the deflector sheets G and the interior casing are the smoke flues 14, which extend from' diametrically opposite sides of the furnace and meet at a central point beneath the cover 5, where they are joined to the stack 15, having a damper 16 to control both of the smoke flues. Extending into the cold air space 12 is a pipe 17, which communicates with the outside air so as to feed the furnace with a proper supply of cold air. This pipe is provided with a damper 1S, as is shown, so that this supply may be properly controlled. The furnace is provided with ash pit doors 19, and a fuel door 2(1), which extends into the fuel chamber or fire pit 10.
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters-Patent is:
1. In a furnac'e, a combustion chamber, a crown sheet arranged there-above, deflector plates supporting said crown sheet, a top member adapted to form with the deflector plates and said crown sheet a heat reservoir, means supporting said top vmember and forming a cold air space, tubular tlues connected with the heat reservoir and the cold air space, a smoke stack, and a. pair of smoke flues extending from the opposite sides of the combustion chamber to a central point where they are joined on and communicate with the stack, said smoke tlues passing transversely across the heat reservoir.
2. In a furnace, an outer casing therefor, a top plate, an inner casing surrounding the combustion chamber 'and forming with the outer casing a cold air space, a crown sheet sepa 1ated from the inner casing, detiector plates supporting said crown sheet and forming therewith and with the top plate a heat reservoir, a stack centrally mounted above the crownsheet and extending above the heat reservoir to the outside of the furnace, and a pair of smoke flues supported by the stack and the deflector plates and extending from said detiector plates to said stack in the heat chamber.
